We introduce the concept of subwavelength imaging with an opaque nonlinear left-handed lens by generating the second-harmonic field. We consider a slab of composite left-handed metamaterial with quadratic nonlinear response and show that such a flat lens can form, under certain conditions, an image of the second-harmonic field of the source being opaque at the fundamental frequency.

We show that the finite-difference frequency-domain method is well-suited to study subwavelength lensing effects in left-handed materials (LHM's) and related problems. We investigate in this paper the imaging properties of an absorptive left-handed material (LHM) slab. For a line source, a geometric explanation to the reason of the thickness limitation on an ideal slab is given. For a lossy slab, the imaging properties are determined by the wavelength, the slab thickness, the distance from the source to the nearer boundary of the slab, and the absorption effect. We propose the use of a left-handed material in an optical waveguide structure to reduce its thickness well below the wavelength of light. We demonstrate that a layer of left-handed material, added to the cladding of a planar waveguide rather than to its core, allows for good light confinement in a subwavelength thin waveguide. We attribute the observed behavior to the change in phase evolution of electromagnetic waves in the guide. This technique can be used for the miniaturization of photonic integrated circuits.
The characteristics of an imaging system formed by a slab of a lossy left-handed material (LHM) are studied. The transfer function of the LHM imaging system is written in an appropriate product form with each term having a clear physical interpretation. A tiny loss of the LHM may suppress the transmission of evanescent waves through the LHM slab and this is explained physically. Here we show that some anisotropic superconductors, such as $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}}$, $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_xO_y}$ and $\mathrm{La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$, are intrinsic left-handed materials. One-dimensional light harvesting structures illuminated by a conventional lens are studied in this paper. Our theoretical study shows that high transmission efficiencies are obtained when the structure is placed near the focal plane of the lens. The considered structure is a finite slit-groove array (SGA) with a given number of grooves that are symmetrically distributed with respect to a central slit.
