The ECMWF ensemble weather forecasts are generated by perturbing the initial conditions of the forecast using a subset of the singular vectors of the linearised propagator. Previous results show that when creating probabilistic forecasts from this ensemble better forecasts are obtained if the mean of the spread and the variability of the spread are calibrated separately. We show results from a simple linear model that suggest that this may be a generic property for all singular vector based ensemble forecasting systems based on only a subset of the full set of singular vectors.

The problem of testing the reliability of ensemble forecasting systems is revisited. A popular tool to assess the reliability of ensemble forecasting systems (for scalar verifications) is the rank histogram, this histogram is expected to be more or less flat, since for a reliable ensemble, the ranks are uniformly distributed among their possible outcomes. Quantitative tests for flatness (e.g.\ Pearson's goodness--of--fit test) have been suggested, without exception though, these tests assume the ranks to be a sequence of independent random variables, which is not the case in general as can be …

Accurately forecasting Arctic sea ice from subseasonal to seasonal scales has been a major scientific effort with fundamental challenges at play. In addition to physics-based earth system models, researchers have been applying multiple statistical and machine learning models for sea ice forecasting. Looking at the potential of data-driven sea ice forecasting, we propose an attention-based Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) ensemble method to predict monthly sea ice extent up to 1 month ahead. Using daily and monthly satellite retrieved sea ice data from NSIDC and atmospheric and oceanic variables f…
Results of direct numerical simulations have been used to show that intensive thermal convection in a horizontal layer and on a hemisphere can be described by the distributed chaos approach. The vorticity and helicity dominated distributed chaos were considered for this purpose. Results of numerical simulations of the Weather Research and Forecast Model (with the moist convection and with the Coriolis effect) and of the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) were also analysed to demonstrate applicability of this approach to the atmospheric processes. The ensemble foreca…
The space weather community has begun to use frontier methods such as data assimilation, machine learning, and ensemble modeling to advance current operational forecasting efforts. This was highlighted by a multi-disciplinary session at the 2017 American Geophysical Union Meeting, 'Frontier Solar-Terrestrial Science Enabled by the Combination of Data-Driven Techniques and Physics-Based Understanding', with considerable discussion surrounding ensemble techniques. Here ensemble methods are described in detail; using a set of predictions to improve on a single-model output, for example taking a s…

Data assimilation (DA) aims to optimally combine model forecasts and observations that are both partial and noisy. Multi-model DA generalizes the variational or Bayesian formulation of the Kalman filter, and we prove that it is also the minimum variance linear unbiased estimator. Here, we formulate and implement a multi-model ensemble Kalman filter (MM-EnKF) based on this framework. The MM-EnKF can combine multiple model ensembles for both DA and forecasting in a flow-dependent manner; it uses adaptive model error estimation to provide matrix-valued weights for the separate models and the obse…

We present an ensemble prediction system using a Deep Learning Weather Prediction (DLWP) model that recursively predicts key atmospheric variables with six-hour time resolution. This model uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on a cubed sphere grid to produce global forecasts. The approach is computationally efficient, requiring just three minutes on a single GPU to produce a 320-member set of six-week forecasts at 1.4° resolution. Ensemble spread is primarily produced by randomizing the CNN training process to create a set of 32 DLWP models with slightly different learned weights. Althou…

As acute climate change impacts weather and climate variability, there is increased demand for robust climate impact model predictions from which forecasts of the impacts can be derived. The quality of those predictions are limited by the climate drivers for the impact models which are nonlinear and highly variable in nature. One way to estimate the uncertainty of the model drivers is to assess the distribution of ensembles of climate forecasts. To capture the uncertainty in the impact model outputs associated with the distribution of the input climate forecasts, each individual forecast ensem…

Ensemble weather forecasts enable a measure of uncertainty to be attached to each forecast, by computing the ensemble's spread. However, generating an ensemble with a good spread-error relationship is far from trivial, and a wide range of approaches to achieve this have been explored -- chiefly in the context of numerical weather prediction models. Here, we aim to transform a deterministic neural network weather forecasting system into an ensemble forecasting system. We test four methods to generate the ensemble: random initial perturbations, retraining of the neural network, use of random dro…
