We consider a multilayer generalization of Ripa's inhomogeneous-density single-layer primitive-equation model. In addition to vary arbitrarily in horizontal position and time, the horizontal velocity and buoyancy fields are allowed to vary linearly with depth within each layer of the model. Preliminary results on linear waves and baroclinic instability suggest that a configuration involving a few layers may set the basis for a quite accurate and numerically efficient ocean model.
"Eddy saturation" is the regime in which the total time-mean volume transport of an oceanic current is relatively insensitive to the wind stress forcing and is often invoked as a dynamical description of Southern Ocean circulation. We revisit the problem of eddy saturation using a primitive-equations model in an idealized channel setup with bathymetry. We apply only mechanical wind stress forcing; there is no diapycnal mixing or surface buoyancy forcing. Our main aim is to assess the relative importance of two mechanisms for producing eddy saturated states: (i) the commonly invoked baroclinic …
The mean state of the atmosphere and ocean is set through a balance between external forcing (winds, radiation, heat and freshwater fluxes) and the emergent turbulence, which transfers energy to dissipative structures. The forcing gives rise to jets in the atmosphere and currents in the ocean, which spontaneously develop turbulent eddies through the baroclinic instability. A critical step in the development of a theory of climate is to properly include the resulting eddy-induced turbulent transport of properties like heat, moisture, and carbon. The baroclinic instability generates flow structu…
Unstructured grid ocean models are advantageous for simulating the coastal ocean and river-estuary-plume systems. However, unstructured grid models tend to be diffusive and/or computationally expensive which limits their applicability to real life problems. In this paper, we describe a novel discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element discretization for the hydrostatic equations. The formulation is fully conservative and second-order accurate in space and time. Monotonicity of the advection scheme is ensured by using a strong stability preserving time integration method and slope limiters. Comp…

An idealized storm scenario is examined in which a wind-generated inertial wave interacts with a turbulent baroclinic quasi-geostrophic flow. The flow is initialized by spinning up a Eady model with a realistic stratification profile. The storm is modeled as an initial value problem for a mixed-layer confined, horizontally-uniform inertial oscillation. The primordial inertial oscillation then evolves under the effects of advection, refraction, dispersion and dissipation. Waves feedback onto the flow by modifying its potential vorticity. In the first few days, refraction dominates and wave ener…
Along-track wavenumber spectral densities of sea surface height (SSH) are estimated from Jason-2 altimetry data as a function of spatial location and calendar month, to understand the seasonality of meso- and submesoscale balanced dynamics across the global ocean. Regions with significant mode-1 and mode-2 baroclinic tides are rejected, restricting the analysis to the extratropics. Where balanced motion dominates, the SSH spectral density is averaged over all pass segments in a region for each calendar month, and is fit to a 4-parameter model consisting of a flat plateau at low wavenumbers, a …
We consider a 2-layer quasi-geostrophic ocean model where the upper layer is forced by a steady Kolmogorov wind stress in a periodic channel domain, which allows to mathematically study the nonlinear development of the resulting flow. The model supports a steady parallel shear flow as a response to the wind stress. As the maximal velocity of the shear flow (equivalently the maximal amplitude of the wind forcing) exceeds a critical threshold, the zonal jet destabilizes due to baroclinic instability and we numerically demonstrate that a first transition occurs. We obtain reduced equations of the…
Ocean motions at frequencies of the internal wave band are generally associated with freely propagating waves that are supported by stable vertical stratification in density. Previous analyses of yearlong current observations from the Bay of Biscay showed that a finestructure of semidiurnal tidal and near-inertial higher harmonics fills the spectrum. Here, a simple model is presented of forced nondispersive motions with forward energy cascade. The model fits the spectral shape of higher harmonics well within statistical significance and shows that such interactions imply maximum wave steepness…
The stability properties of intermediate-order climate models are investigated by computing their Lyapunov exponents (LEs). The two models considered are PUMA (Portable University Model of the Atmosphere), a primitive-equation simple general circulation model, and MAOOAM (Modular Arbitrary-Order Ocean-Atmosphere Model), a quasi-geostrophic coupled ocean-atmosphere model on a beta-plane. We wish to investigate the effect of the different levels of filtering on the instabilities and dynamics of the atmospheric flows. Moreover, we assess the impact of the oceanic coupling, the dissipation scheme …
We present a prognostic, one-equation model for eddy-mean flow interactions to parameterize the divergence of the Eliassen-Palm flux tensor (EPFT) that arises from thickness-weighted averaging (TWA) the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations. The TWA system of equations does not invoke approximations beyond those for which the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations are valid, constituting a mathematically consistent framework with clear physical interpretations. This model is intended for the adiabatic interior of zonally symmetric flows, in the absence of topographic features, where terms corresponding t…
The spindown of a geostrophically balanced density front in an upper-ocean mixed layer is simulated with a large eddy simulation (LES) model that resolves O(1000) m down to O(1) m scale. Our goal is to examine the interaction between the submesoscale and the turbulent finescale, and better characterize vertical transport, frontogenesis and dissipative processes. The flow passes through symmetric and baroclinic instabilities, spawns vortex filaments of O(100) m thickness as well as larger eddies, and develops turbulence that is spatially localized and organized. A O(100) m physical-space filter…
