It is shown that a system of two coupled planar material sheets possessing surface mode (polariton) resonances can be used for the purpose of evanescent field restoration and, thus, for the sub-wavelength near-field imaging. The sheets are placed in free space so that they are parallel and separated by a certain distance. Due to interaction of the resonating surface modes (polaritons) of the sheets an exponential growth in the amplitude of an evanescent plane wave coming through the system can be achieved. This effect was predicted earlier for backward-wave (double-negative or Veselago) slab lenses. The alternative system considered here is proved to be realizable at microwaves by grids or arrays of resonant particles. The necessary electromagnetic properties of the resonating grids and the particles are investigated and established. Theoretical results are supported by microwave experiments that demonstrate amplification of evanescent modes.
The canonical problem of the propagation of surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves localized to the planar interface of a metal and a sculptured nematic thin film (SNTF) that is periodically nonhomogeneous along the direction normal to the interface was formulated. Solution of the dispersion equation obtained thereby confirmed the possibility of exciting multiple SPP waves of the same frequency or color. However, these SPP waves differ in phase speed, field structure, and the e-folding distance along the direction of propagation.
We illustrate that the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation through the prism coupling method is fundamentally limited by destructive interference of spatial light components. We propose that the destructive interference can be canceled out by tailoring the relative phase for the different spatial components. As a numerical demonstration, we show that through the phase modulation the excited SPP field is concentrated to a hot energy spot, and the SPP field intensity is dramatically enhanced about three folds in comparison with a conventional Gaussian beam illumination.
We experimentally demonstrate a prototype of a cylindrical enlarging lens capable of enhancing and restoring evanescent fields. The enabling phenomenon is the resonant excitation of coupled surface modes in a system of two cylindrical arrays of small resonant particles. As was shown in [J. Appl. Phys. 96, 1293 (2004)], this phenomenon in planar arrays can be used in electromagnetic near-field imaging. Here, we use a similar structure in a cylindrically symmetric configuration, which gives us a possibility to obtain an enlarged near-field image.
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) at the interface of a columnar thin film (CTF) and metal exist over a range of propagation directions relative to the morphology of the CTF which depends on the tilt of the columns in the CTF. The phase speed of the SPP wave varies mainly as a function of the tilt of the CTF columns. Both the confinement of the SPP wave to the interface and the decay of the SPP wave along the direction of propagation depend strongly on the direction of propagation relative to the morphologically significant plane of the CTF. The greater the columnar tilt in relation to the int…
Strong coupling between various kinds of material excitations and optical modes has recently shown potential to modify chemical reaction rates in both excited and ground states. The ground-state modification in chemical reaction rates has usually been reported by coupling a vibrational mode of an organic molecule to the vacuum field of an external optical cavity, such as a planar Fabry-Pérot microcavity made of two metallic mirrors. However, using an external cavity to form polaritonic states might: (i) limit the scope of possible applications of such systems, and (ii) be unnecessary. Here we …
At the planar interface between a material and vacuum, the complex surface response S(omega)=[eps(omega) 1]/[eps(omega)+1], with eps(omega) the relative complex dielectric permittivity of the material, exhibit resonances, typical of the surface polariton modes, when eps(omega) ~ 1. We show that for a moderately sharp resonance, S(omega) is satisfactorily described with a mere (complex) Lorentzian, independently of the details affecting the various bulk resonances describing ) eps(omega). Remarkably, this implies a quantitative correlation between the resonant behaviors of Re[S(omega)] and Im[S…
The paper considers the dynamics of nonlinear surface plasmon polariton waves in a planar plasmon waveguide, which is a heterostructure of non-magnetic metallic and dielectric layers. The obtained in the work nonlinear equations and their analytical solutions describe the vector cnoidal and solitary plasmon polariton waves excited by single electromagnetic pulse at the waveguide. Nonlinear plasmon polariton waves arise under the influence of the Kerr nonlinearity of metal and the saturation of nonlinearity at the heterostructure. The period and profile of envelope of the excited nonlinear surf…
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) lasing requires population inversion, it is inefficient and possesses poor spectral properties. We develop an inversion-less concept for a quantum plasmonic waveguide that exploits unidirectional superradiant SPP emission of radiation to produce intense coherent surface plasmon beams. Our scheme includes a resonantly driven cold atomic medium in a lossless dielectric situated above an ultra-low loss negative index metamaterial~(NIMM) layer. We propose generating unidirectional superradiant radiation of the plasmonic field within an atomic medium and a NIMM lay…
We report on strong enhancement of mid-infrared second harmonic generation (SHG) from SiC nanopillars due to the resonant excitation of localized surface phonon-polaritons within the Reststrahlen band. The magnitude of the SHG peak at the monopole mode experiences a strong dependence on the resonant frequency beyond that described by the field localization degree and the dispersion of linear and nonlinear-optical SiC properties. Comparing the results for the identical nanostructures made of 4H and 6H SiC polytypes, we demonstrate the interplay of localized surface phonon polaritons with zone-f…
Resonant photoelastic coupling in semiconductor nanostructures opens new perspectives for strongly enhanced light-sound interaction in optomechanical resonators. One potential problem, however, is the reduction of the cavity Q-factor induced by dissipation when the resonance is approached. We show in this letter that cavity-polariton mediation in the light-matter process overcomes this limitation allowing for a strongly enhanced photon-phonon coupling without significant lifetime reduction in the strongly-coupled regime. Huge optomechanical coupling factors in the PetaHz/nm range are envisaged…
We describe a surface structure consisting of a metal-air interface where the metallic part consists of two metallic segments with a periodic modulation of the interface between them. Such a structure possesses a different transmissivity for a surface plasmon polariton incident on it from one side of it than it has for a surface plasmon polariton incident on it from the opposite side. This asymmetric transmission of a surface plasmon polariton is based on the suppression of the zero-order Bragg beam which, for a certain value of the modulation depth, is not transmitted through the structure, w…
Planar microcavities filled with active materials containing excitonic resonances host radiative exciton-polariton (polariton) modes with in-plane wave vectors within the light cone. They also host at least one mode guided in the cavity plane by total internal reflection and which is not radiatively coupled to the vacuum modes except through defects or sample edges. We show that polariton lasing mediated by polariton stimulated scattering can occur concomitantly in both types of modes in a microcavity. By adjusting the detuning between the exciton and the radiative photon mode one can favor po…
Tamm plasmon provides a new avenue in plasmonics of interface states in planar multilayer structures due to its strong light matter interaction. This article reviews the research and development in Tamm plasmon polariton excited at the interface of a metal and a distributed Bragg reflector. Tamm plasmon offers an easy planar solution compared to patterned surface plasmon devices with huge field enhancement at the interface and does not require of any phase matching method for its excitation. The ease of depositing multilayer thin film stacks, direct optical excitation, and high-Q modes make Ta…
The physical origin of spectral shift of thermally generated surface phonon-polariton (SPhP) resonance of a silicon carbide (SiC) bulk mediated by a non-resonant film is elucidated. The local density of electromagnetic states (LDOS) in a non-resonant intrinsic silicon (Si) film due to thermal emission by SiC, derived using fluctuational electrodynamics, exhibits a local maximum near SPhP resonant frequency in addition to a lower frequency resonance generated by gap modes emerging in the vacuum gap separating the SiC and Si layers. Multiple reflections within the vacuum gap also induce a LDOS d…
Spoof surface modes on nanostructured metallic surfaces are known to have tailorable dispersion dependent on the geometric characteristics of the periodic pattern. Here we examine the spoof plasmon dispersion on an isolated grating and a grating-planar mirror cavity configuration. The spoof polariton dispersion in the cavity is obtained using the scattering matrix approach, and the related differential modal density of states is introduced to obtain the mode dispersion and classify the cavity polariton modes. The grating-mirror cavity geometry is an example of periodically nanostructured metal…
Polariton lattice condensates provide a platform for on chip quantum emulations. Interactions in extended polariton lattices are currently limited by the intrinsic photonic disorder of microcavities. Here, we fabricate a strain compensated planar GaAs/AlAs microcavity with embedded InGaAs quantum wells and report on polariton condensation under non-resonant optical excitation. Evidence of polariton condensation is supported spectroscopically both in reflection and transmission geometry, whilst the observation of a second threshold to photon lasing allows us to conclusively distinguish between …
We propose a scheme for the coupler-free excitation of surface polaritonic solitons and breathers in a planar plasmonic waveguide structure comprising of a transparent layer, a metal layer and a layer of three-level lambda-type atomic medium. In the proposed system, an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity is achieved via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the bottom atomic medium, which can be controlled through proper modulation of the frequency detunings and Rabi frequencies of the driving laser fields. This nonlinearity balances the dispersion in the system, thus providing the necessar…
The planar interface of an isotropic homogeneous metal and an ambichiral dielectric material can guide surface-plasmon-polariton waves. The planar interface of an isotropic, homogeneous dielectric material and an ambichiral dielectric material can guide Dyakonov-Tamm waves. In either instance, we found that, as the ambichiral partnering material evolves into a finely chiral material, the solutions of the dispersion equation for surface-wave propagation evince convergence. The convergence is faster for the surface waves with larger phase speeds than for the surface waves with smaller phase spee…
We report on polariton states bound to defects in planar GaAs/AlAs microcavities grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The defect types relevant for the spatial polariton dynamics in these structures are cross-hatch misfit dislocations, and point-like defects extended over several micrometers. We attribute the latter defects to Ga droplets emitted occasionally by the Ga cell during the growth. These defects, also known as oval defects, result in a dome-like local modulation of surface, which is translated into the cavity structure and leads to a lateral modulation of the cavity polariton energy of …
We study the spontaneous formation of exciton polariton vortices in an all-optical non-resonantly excited annular trap, which is formed by ring-shaped subpicosecond laser pulses. Since the light emitted by these vortices carries orbital angular momentum (OAM) corresponding to their topological charge, we apply a dedicated OAM spectroscopy technique to detect the OAM of the measurement signal with picosecond time resolution. This allows us to identify the formation of OAM modes and investigate the dynamics of the vortex formation process. We also study the power dependence of this process and h…
We explored the effects of relative motion on the excitation of surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves guided by the planar interface of a metal film and a dielectric slab, both materials being isotropic and homogeneous. Electromagnetic phasors in moving and non-moving reference frames were related directly using the corresponding Lorentz transformations. Our numerical studies revealed that, in the case of a uniformly moving dielectric slab, the angle of incidence for SPP-wave excitation is highly sensitive to (i) the ratio $β$ of the speed of motion to speed of light in free space and (ii) the…
In the quest aimed at unveiling alternative plasmonic elements overcoming noble metals for selected applications in photonics, we investigate by numerical simulations the near ultraviolet-to-near infrared optical response of solid and liquid Bi nanospheres embedded in a dielectric matrix. We also determine the resulting transmission contrast upon reversible solid-liquid phase transition to evaluate their potential for switchable optical filtering. The optical response of the solid (liquid) Bi nanospheres is ruled by localized polaritonic (plasmonic) resonances tunable by controlling the diamet…

We address topological currents in polariton condensates excited by uniform resonant pumps in finite honeycomb arrays of microcavity pillars with a hole in the center. Such currents arise under combined action of the spin-orbit coupling and the Zeeman splitting that break the time-reversal symmetry and open a topological gap in the spectrum of the structure. The most representative feature of this structure is the presence of two interfaces, inner and outer ones, where the directions of topological currents are opposite. Due to the finite size of the structure polariton-polariton interactions …
We present theoretical and experimental study of resonant Brillouin scattering of excitonic polaritons in one-dimensional multiple-quantum-well structure. We obtain general analytical results for the scattering light spectra, valid for arbitrary quantum well arrangement. Application of our theory to the specific case of short-period superlattice shows a perfect quantitative agreement with experimental results for the height, width and position of the Brillouin scattering peaks and allows us to determine the energy, radiative and nonradiative decay rates of quantum well excitons. We reveal the …
As one of the most fundamental optical phenomena, refraction between isotropic media is characterized by light bending towards the normal to the boundary when passing from a low- to a high-refractive-index medium. However, in anisotropic media, refraction is a much more exotic phenomenon. The most general case of refraction between two anisotropic media remains unexplored, particularly in natural media and at the nanoscale. Here, we visualize and comprehensively study refraction of electromagnetic waves between two strongly anisotropic (hyperbolic) media, and, importantly, we do it with the us…
We present a theoretical analysis of the effects of short range surface plasmon polariton excitation on sub-wavelength bridges in metal gratings. We show that localized resonances in thin metal bridges placed within the slit of a free-standing silver grating dramatically modify transmission spectra and boost absorption regardless of the periodicity of the grating. Additionally, the interference of multiple localized resonances makes it possible to tailor the absorption properties of ultrathin gratings, regardless of the apertures' geometrical size. This tunable, narrow-band, enhanced-absorptio…
The dispersion properties of exciton polaritons in multiple-quantum-well based resonant photonic crystals are studied. In the case of structures with an elementary cell possessing a mirror symmetry with respect to its center, a powerful analytical method for deriving and analyzing dispersion laws of the respective normal modes is developed. The method is used to analyze band structure and dispersion properties of several types of resonant photonic crystals, which would not submit to analytical treatment by other approaches. These systems include multiple quantum well structures with an arbitra…
The resonant acousto-optic effect is studied both analytically and numerically in the terahertz range where the transverse-optical (TO) phonons play the role of a mediator which strongly couples the ultrasound and light fields. A propagating acoustic wave interacts with the TO phonons via anharmonic channels and opens band gaps in the TO-phonon polariton energy dispersion that results in pronounced Bragg scattering and reflection of the incoming light. The separation in frequency of different Bragg replicas, which is at the heart of acousto-optics, allows us to study the resonant acousto-optic…
Electronic resonances can significantly enhance the photon-phonon coupling in cavity optomechanics, but are normally avoided due to absorption losses and dephasing by inhomogeneous broadening. We experimentally demonstrate that exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities enable GHz optomechanics with single-particle resonant couplings reaching record values in the 10s of MHz range. Moreover, this resonant enhancement is protected from inhomogeneous broadening by the Rabi gap. Single-polariton non-linearities and the optomechanical strong-coupling regime become accessible in this platform…
We consider a polariton condensate in a microcavity driven by a bichromatic resonant pump formed by two vortical laser beams carrying different topological charges. The system is additionally confined in a ring-shaped potential. We show that in this system steadily rotating nonlinear localized modes can be excited, whose angular rotation frequency is determined by optical frequencies and topological charges of the pump beams. When pump frequencies approach eigenfrequencies of the modes of the ring potential, resonant growth of peak amplitude of the excited states occurs. Repulsive polariton-po…
We demonstrate Resonant Tunneling Diodes, embedded in double metal cavities, strongly coupled to the cavity field, while maintaining their electronic properties. We measure the polariton dispersion and find a relative vacuum Rabi splitting of 16%, which explicitly qualifies for the strong-coupling regime. Additionally we show that electronic transport has a significant influence on the polaritons by modulating the coupling strength. The merge between electronic transport and polaritonic physics in our devices opens up a new aspect of cavity quantum electro-dynamics and integrated photonics.
Resonant interaction between excitonic transitions of molecules and localized electromagnetic field allows the formation of hybrid light-matter polaritonic states. This hybridization of the light and the matter states has been shown to be able to significantly alter the intrinsic properties of molecular ensembles placed inside the optical cavity. Here, we have achieved strong coupling between the excitonic transition in typical oligonucleotide-based molecular beacons labelled with a pair of organic dye molecules, demonstrating an efficient donor to acceptor resonance energy transfer, and the t…
We propose a mechanism of angular momentum conversion from optical transverse spin in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) to conduction electron spin. Free electrons in the metal follow the transversally spinning electric field of SPP, and the resulting orbital motions create inhomogeneous static magnetisation in the metal. By solving the spin diffusion equation in the SPP, we find that the magnetisation field generates an electron spin current. We show that there exists a resonant condition where the spin current is resonantly enhanced, and the polarisation of the spin current is flipped. Our t…

We revisit scattering of electromagnetic waves from metallic and semiconducting cylinders in the framework of complex angular momentum techniques. We prove that "resonant surface polariton modes" are generated by a unique surface wave, i.e. a surface polariton, propagating close to the cylinder surface. This surface polariton corresponds to a particular Regge pole of the $S$-matrix of the cylinder. From the associated Regge trajectory we can construct semiclassically the spectrum of the complex frequencies of the resonant surface polariton modes which can be considered as Breit-Wigner-type res…
We experimentally resolve the dispersion of multiple vibro-polariton modes issued from the strong coupling of different vibrational bands of the methylene group (CH2) in a 2.56$μ$m thick polyethylene film with the confined modes of a mid-infrared Fabry-Perot micro-cavity. We measure a Rabi frequency of 111 cm$^{-1}$ for the stretching doublet around 2950 cm$^{-1}$ and a Rabi frequency of 29 cm$^{-1}$ for the scissoring doublet around 1460 cm$^{-1}$. This simple experimental approach offers the possibility to accurately fit the measured molecular film dielectric function. We show that the polar…
We consider the scattering of electromagnetic waves by a left-handed cylinder -- i.e., by a cylinder fabricated from a left-handed material -- in the framework of complex angular momentum techniques. We discuss both the TE and TM theories. We emphasize more particularly the resonant aspects of the problem linked to the existence of surface polaritons. We prove that the long-lived resonant modes can be classified into distinct families, each family being generated by one surface polariton propagating close to the cylinder surface and we physically describe all the surface polaritons by providin…
We address formation of stable dissipative surface solitons in the exciton-polariton condensate in one-dimensional array of microcavity pillars under the action of localized resonant pump acting in the edge resonator. We show that localization degree and peak amplitudes of surface solitons can be effectively controlled by the pump frequency and that the allowed energy gap of periodic structure determines the energy range, where surface solitons can form. One observes bistability at sufficiently large pump amplitudes and nonlinearity-induced shift of the position of resonance peak from the allo…
We experimentally demonstrate long-wave infrared-visible sum-frequency generation microscopy for imaging polaritonic resonances of infrared (IR) nanophotonic structures. This nonlinear-optical approach provides direct access to the resonant field enhancement of the polaritonic near fields, while the spatial resolution is limited by the wavelength of the visible sum-frequency signal. As a proof-of-concept, we here study periodic arrays of subdiffractional nanostructures made of 4H-silicon carbide supporting localized surface phonon polaritons. By spatially scanning tightly focused incident beam…
Biomimetic nanoengineered metamaterials called chiral sculptured thin films (CSTFs) are attractive platforms for optical sensing because their porosity, morphology and optical properties can be tailored to order. Furthermore, their ability to support more than one surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) wave at a planar interface with a metal offers functionality beyond that associated with conventional SPP--based sensors. An empirical model was constructed to describe SPP-wave propagation guided by the planar interface of a CSTF--infiltrated with a fluid which supposedly contains analytes to be detec…
We photo-excite slab polymer waveguides doped with J-aggregating dye molecules and measure the leaky emission from strongly coupled waveguide exciton polariton modes at room temperature. We show that the momentum of the waveguide exciton polaritons can be controlled by modifying the thickness of the excitonic waveguide. Non-resonantly pumped excitons in the slab excitonic waveguide decay into transverse electric and transverse magnetic strongly coupled exciton waveguide modes with radial symmetry. These leak to cones of light with radial and azimuthal polarizations.
The canalization of terahertz surface plasmon polaritons using a modulated graphene monolayer is investigated for subwavelength imaging. An anisotropic surface conductivity formed by a set of parallel nanoribbons with alternating positive and negative imaginary conductivities is used to realize the canalization regime required for hyperlensing. The ribbons are narrow compared to the wavelength, and are created electronically by gating a graphene layer over a corrugated ground plane. Good quality canalization of surface plasmon polaritons is shown in the terahertz even in the presence of realis…
