The status of stochastic cooling and developments over the years are reviewed with reference to much of the original work. Both theoretical and technological subjects are considered.
Up to present time the stochastic cooling was only tested and used at the microwave frequencies. Majority of these stochastic cooling systems operate without Schottky band overlap which greatly simplifies tuning of cooling systems and removes unwanted coupling between different cooling systems. A transition from the microwave stochastic cooling to the optical stochastic cooling or to the coherent electron cooling increases the central frequency of cooling systems by orders of magnitude and makes impossible a cooling system operation without overlap of Schottky bands. In this paper we consider …
Stochastic cooling, as the different cooling mechanism from electron cooling, is designed and constructed on CSRe (experimental Cooling Storage Ring) in HIRFL (Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou) at present. The beam extracted from CSRm (main Cooling Storage Ring) is injected into the CSRe, and then the secondary beam with large momentum spread and large emittance is produced at the internal target area. This paper is designed to optimize the lattice of CSRe in order to satisfy the requirement of stochastic cooling system. Particle Tracking Method is used and both transverse and longitudin…
In this brief report we pointed at mistake in paper A. Zholents, Damping Force in the Transit-Time Method of Optical Stochastic Cooling, PRLST. Mar 1, 2012. 2 pp. Published in Phys.Rev.ST Accel. Beams 15 (2012) 032801.
The paper presents a journal version of the Design Report on the Optical Stochastic Cooling experiment to be carried out at IOTA ring in Fermilab later this year. It discusses the theory which experiment is based on, beam parameters, major requirements to the storage ring systems and technical details of the experiment implementation.
We discuss the optical stochastic cooling (OSC) method in applications to the beams of charged particles, circulating in accelerators and storage rings. In this publication we concentrated on various OSC schemes in a diluted beam approximation, when the heating of selected particle by its neighboring ones could be neglected. Even so, this approximation allows us to identify important features in the beam cooling. In the forthcoming publication, on the basis of approach developed here, we will include effects of heating in the dynamics of cooling.
A new 150 MeV electron storage ring is being built at Fermilab. The construction of a new machine pursues two goals: A test of highly non-linear integrable optics and a test of optical stochastic cooling. This paper discusses details of OSC arrangements, choice of major parameters of the cooling scheme and incoming experimental tests of the optical amplifier prototype which uses highly doped Ti-sapphire crystal as amplification medium.
Optical stochastic cooling (OSC) is a promising technique for the cooling of dense particle beams. Its operation at optical frequencies enables obtaining a much larger bandwidth compared to the wellknown microwave-based stochastic cooling. In the OSC undulator radiation generated by a particle in an upstream \pickup" undulator is amplified and focused at the location of a downstream "kicker" undulator. Inside the kicker, a particle interacts with its own radiation field from the pickup. The resulting interaction produces a longitudinal kick with its value depending on the particles momentum wh…
Intrabeam scattering is the major mechanism resulting in a growth of beam emittances and fast luminosity degradation in the Tevatron. As a result in the case of optimal collider operation only about 40% of antiprotons are used to the store end and the rest are discarded. Beam cooling is the only effective remedy to increase the particle burn rate and, consequently, the luminosity. Unfortunately neither electron nor stochastic cooling can be effective at the Tevatron energy and bunch density. Thus the optical stochastic cooling (OSC) is the only promising technology capable to cool the Tevatron…
Possibilities to accumulate antiprotons in the Recycler are considered for three different cases: with current stochastic cooling, with upgraded stochastic cooling and with electron cooling. With stochastic cooling only, even upgraded, Recycler looks hardly useful. However, with electron cooling at its goal parameters and reasonably good vacuum in the Recycler, this machine would be efficient.
Optical stochastic cooling (OSC) is expected to enable fast cooling of dense particle beams. Transition from microwave to optical frequencies enables an achievement of stochastic cooling rates which are orders of magnitude higher than ones achievable with the classical microwave based stochastic cooling systems. A subsytem critical to the OSC scheme is the focusing optics used to image radiation from the upstream "pickup" undulator to the downstream "kicker" undulator. In this paper, we present simulation results using wave-optics calculation carried out with the {\sc Synchrotron Radiation Wor…
Ultra-fast stochastic cooling would be desirable in certain applications, for example, in order to boost final luminosity in a muon collider or neutrino factory, where short particle lifetimes severely limit the total time available to reduce beam phase space. But fast cooling requires very high-bandwidth amplifiers so as to limit the incoherent heating effects from neighboring particles. A method of transit-time optical stochastic cooling has been proposed which would employ high-gain, high-bandwidth, solid-state lasers to amplify the spontaneous radiation from the charged particle bunch in a…
Beam cooling enables an increase of peak and average luminosities and significantly expands the discovery potential of colliders; therefore, it is an indispensable component of any modern design. Optical Stochastic Cooling (OSC) is a high-bandwidth, beam-cooling technique that will advance the present state-of-the-art, stochastic cooling rate by more than three orders of magnitude. It is an enabling technology for next-generation, discovery-science machines at the energy and intensity frontiers including hadron and electron-ion colliders. This paper presents the status of our experimental effo…
A proposed experiment to demonstrate Optical Stochastic Cooling (OSC) in the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) based on an arc-bypass design is presented. This arc-bypass provides significantly longer optical delay than the dog-leg style chicane, opening up the possibility of a multi-pass or staged optical amplifier that can achieve the gains required for effective cooling of hadron or heavy-ions. Beyond introducing the arc-bypass, in this paper we study the stability requirements for the dipoles comprising it and investigate the use of an optical feedback system to relax the dipole and lig…
In preparation for a demonstration of optical stochastic cooling in the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have developed a particle tracking simulation to study the relevant beam dynamics. Optical radiation emitted in the pickup undulator gives a momentum kick to that same particle in the kicker undulator. The optics of the electron bypass from pickup to kicker couples betatron amplitude and momentum offset to path length so that the momentum kick reduces emittance and momentum spread. Nearby electrons contribute an incoherent noise. Layout of the bypass line is presented that accommodat…
Particle accelerators and storage rings have been transformative instruments of discovery, and, for many applications, innovations in particle-beam cooling have been a principal driver of that success1. Beam cooling reduces the spread in particle positions and momenta, while keeping the number of particles constant, and combats diffusive effects, thereby enabling particle accumulation and the production and preservation of intense beams. In the case of particle colliders, cooling increases the likelihood of observing rare physics events. One of the most important conceptual and technological a…
This report provides a description of unbunched beam stochastic cooling in the framework of control theory. The main interest in the investigation is concentrated on the beam stability in an active cooling system. A stochastic cooling system must be considered as a closed-loop, similar to the feedback systems used to damp collective instabilities. These systems, which are able to act upon themselves, are potentially unstable. The self-consistent solution for the beam motion is derived by means of a mode analysis of the collective beam motion. This solution yields a criterion for the stability …
Transverse ionization cooling of muons is modeled as a Brownian motion of the muon beam as it traverses a Li or Be rod. A Langevin like equation is written for the free particle case (no external transverse magnetic field) and for the case of a harmonically bound beam in the presence of a focusing magnetic field. We demonstrate that the well known muon cooling equations for short-absorbers can be extrapolated to the useful case of a long absorber rod with a focusing magnetic field present.
A number of recent developments have led to simulations of an inverse cyclotron for cooling intense muon beams for neutrino factories and muon colliders. Such a device could potentially act as a novel beam cooling mechanism for muons, and it would be significantly smaller and cheaper than other cooling channel designs. Realistic designs are still being explored, but the first simulations of particle tracking in the inverse cyclotron, with accumulation in the cyclotron core, have been done with electrostatic simulations in the particle-in-cell code VORPAL. We present an overview of the muon inv…
Optical Stochastic Cooling (OSC) is an optical-bandwidth extension of Stochastic Cooling that could advance the state-of-the-art cooling rate in beam cooling by three to four orders of magnitude [1-3]. The concept of OSC was first suggested in the early 1990s by Zolotorev, Zholents and Mikhailichenko, and replaced the microwave hardware of SC with optical analogs, such as wigglers and optical amplifiers. A number of variations on the original OSC concept have been proposed, and while a variety of proof-of-principle demonstrations and operational uses have been considered, the concept was not e…
