The waveguiding properties of two silica-based airguiding photonic bandgap fiber designs are investigated with special emphasis on material effects. The nonlinear coefficients are found to be 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than those obtained in index-guiding microstructured fibers with large mode areas. The material dispersion of silica makes a significant contribution to the total chromatic dispersion although less than 10% of the field energy is located in the silica regions of the fibers. These findings suggest that dispersion engineering through the choice of base material may be a possibility in this type of fibers.
We introduce a small-core air-guiding photonic crystal fiber whose cladding is made of improved air-silica photonic crystal with non-circular air holes placed in triangular lattice. The fiber achieves un-disturbed bandgap guidance over 350nm wavelength range.
We report generation of broadband low divergent supercontinuum over the entire wavelength window of 1.5 to 3.5 μm from a 2.25 meter long effective single moded photonic bandgap fiber with mode area of 1100 μm2.
The field energy distributions and effective mode areas of silica-based photonic bandgap fibers with a honeycomb airhole structure in the cladding and an extra airhole defining the core are investigated. We present a generalization of the common effective area definition, suitable for the problem at hand, and compare the results for the photonic bandgap fibers with those of index-guiding microstructured fibers. While the majority of the field energy in the honeycomb photonic bandgap fibers is found to reside in the silica, a substantial fraction (up to ~30%) can be located in the airholes. Thi…
We demonstrate an amplitude-based micro-displacement sensor that uses a plastic photonic bandgap Bragg fiber with one end coated with a silver layer. The reflection intensity of the Bragg fiber is characterized in response to different displacements (or bending curvatures). We note that the Bragg reflector of the fiber acts as an efficient mode stripper for the wavelengths near the edge of the fiber bandgap, which makes the sensor extremely sensitive to bending or displacements at these wavelengths. Besides, by comparison of the Bragg fiber sensor to a sensor based on a regular multimode fiber…
We present two novel hybrid photonic structures made of silica that possess two well-separated frequency bandgaps. The addition of interstitial air holes in a precise location and size allows these bandgaps to open up with a ratio of ${\sim3}$ between their central frequencies at the air line ${ck_z/w=1}$, thus fulfilling the basic guidance condition for third harmonic generation in hollow-core fibers. In addition, these designs may serve as high-power laser delivery of two well-separated wavelengths, such as visible and near infrared.
We experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber spectrometer consisting of a photonic bandgap fiber bundle and a black and white CCD camera. Photonic crystal fibers used in this work are the large solid core all-plastic Bragg fibers designed for operation in the visible spectral range and featuring bandgaps of 60nm - 180nm-wide. 100 Bragg fibers were chosen to have complimentary and partially overlapping bandgaps covering a 400nm-840nm spectral range. The fiber bundle used in our work is equivalent in its function to a set of 100 optical filters densely packed in the area of ~1cm2. Black and white …
We present a formal analogy between the eigenvalue problem for guided scalar modes in a low-contrast photonic bandgap fiber and quasi-stationary TM modes of a two-dimensional (2D) photonic structure. Using this analogy, we numerically study the confinement losses of disordered microstructured fibers through the leakage rate of an open 2D system with high refractive index inclusions. Our results show that for large values of the disorder, the confinement losses increase. However, they also suggest that losses might be improved in strongly disordered fibers by exploring ranges of physical parame…
We numerically demonstrate self-similar propagation of parabolic optical pulses through a highly nonlinear and passive specialty photonic bandgap fiber at 2.8 micron. In this context, we have proposed a scheme endowed with a rapidly varying, but of nearly-mean-zero longitudinal dispersion and modulated nonlinear profile in order to achieve self-similarity of the formed parabolic pulse propagating over longer distances. To implement the proposed scheme, we have designed a segmented bandgap fiber with suitably tapered counterparts to realize such customized dispersion with chalchogenide glass ma…
We propose supercritical xenon in a hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber as a highly nonlinear medium, and demonstrate 200 nm control over the guidance window of the fiber as the xenon goes through its supercritical phase transition. The large optical polarizability and monoatomic nature of xenon are predicted to allow large optical nonlinearity, on the same order as that of fused silica, while maintaining greatly reduced Raman scattering, offering benefits for nonlinear and quantum optics.
We show that a Rubidium vapor can be produced within the core of a photonic band-gap fiber yielding an optical depth in excess of 2000. Our technique for producing the vapor is based on coating the inner walls of the fiber core with an organosilane and using light-induced atomic desorption to release Rb atoms into the core. We develop a model to describe the dynamics of the atomic density, and as an initial demonstration of the potential of this system for supporting ultra-low-level nonlinear optical interactions, we perform electromagnetically-induced transparency with control-field powers in…
Surface modes (SM) are highly spatially localized modes existing at the core-cladding interface of photonic-bandgap hollow-core fiber (PBG-HCF). When coupling with SM, the air modes (AM) in the core would suffer a higher loss despite being spectrally within the cladding photonic bandgap, and would be highly dispersive around the avoided crossing (anti-crossing) wavelength. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate that such avoided crossings can play an important role in the tuning of the temperature dependence of group delay of AM of PBG-HCF. At higher temperatures, both the thermal-optic eff…
We show that two-photon absorption (TPA) in Rubidium atoms can be greatly enhanced by the use of a hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber. We investigate off-resonant, degenerate Doppler-free TPA on the 5S1/2 - 5D5/2 transition and observe 1% absorption of a pump beam with a total power of only 1 mW in the fiber. These results are verified by measuring the amount of emitted blue fluorescence and are consistent with the theoretical predictions which indicate that transit time effects play an important role in determining the two-photon absorption cross-section in a confined geometry.
We present an overview of photonic textile displays woven on a Jacquard loom, using newly discovered polymer photonic bandgap fibers that have the ability to change color and appearance when illuminated with ambient or transmitted light. The photonic fiber can be thin (smaller than 300 microns in diameter) and highly flexible, which makes it possible to weave in the weft on a computerized Jacquard loom and develop intricate double weave structures together with a secondary weft yarn. We demonstrate how photonic crystal fibers enable a variety of color and structural patterns on the textile, an…
Photonic crystal fibers represent one of the most active research fields in modern fiber optics. The recent advancements of topological photonics have inspired new fiber concepts and designs. Here, we demonstrate a new type of topological photonic crystal fibers based on second order photonic corner modes from the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Different from previous works where the in-plane properties at $k_z=0$ have been mainly studied, we find that in the fiber configuration of $k_z>0$, a topological bandgap only exists when the propagation constant $k_z$ along the fiber axis is larger than a…
It is shown that, in the liquid-filled hollow core of a single-mode photonic crystal fiber, a micron-sized particle can be held stably against a fluidic counter-flow using radiation pressure, and moved to and fro (over 10s of cm) by ramping the laser power up and down. The results represent a major advance over previous work on particle transport in optically multimode liquid-filled fibers, in which the fluctuating transverse field pattern renders the radiation and trapping forces unpredictable. The counter-flowing liquid can be loaded with sequences of chemicals in precisely controlled concen…
Since the forward and backward waves are coupled with each other and a standing wave with no net propagation of energy is formed in the photonic bandgap, it is a commonsense of basic physics that, any kinds of effects associated with wave propagation including four-wave-mixing (FWM) are thought to be impossible. However, we lay great emphasis here on explaining that this commonsense could be broken under specific circumstances. In this article, we report with the first experimental observation of the energy conversion in the photonic bandgap into other channel via FWM. Owing to the phase manip…
We show how to apply tiling and pattern theory in the design of hollow-core photonic crystal fibers and guide light in multiple bandgaps. By combining two different glass apexes in a single [$3^6$;$3^2$.$4.3.4$] 2-uniform tiling, transmission regions with fundamental, second and third harmonic wavelengths are supported. This cladding design may also be an excellent candidate for high power beam delivery of Er/Yb, Nd:YAG and Ti:Sapphire laser sources.
We propose a scheme to enhance the effective photonic bandwidth exploiting bandgap overlapping of same order or different orders through judiciously chosen aperiodic geometries is spatial dimension. To implement the scheme, we design a specialty optical fiber with hybrid chirped-cladding. Our designed fiber provides an ultra-wide photonic bandwidth of ~ 3 micron. The less dispersive behavior of the structure carries the signature of zero dispersion at ~2.7micron. The proposed two material all-solid fiber geometry is based on thermally compatible chalcogenide glasses, GeAsSe and AsSe as low and…
We demonstrate a new class of hollow-core Bragg fibers that are composed of concentric cylindrical silica rings separated by nanoscale support bridges. We theoretically predict and experimentally observe hollow-core confinement over an octave frequency range. The bandwidth of bandgap guiding in this new class of Bragg fibers exceeds that of other hollow-core fibers reported in the literature. With only three rings of silica cladding layers, these Bragg fibers achieve propagation loss of the order of 1 dB/m.
We show that point defects in two-dimensional photonic crystals can support bound states in the continuum (BICs). The mechanism of confinement is a symmetry mismatch between the defect mode and the Bloch modes of the photonic crystal. These BICs occur in the absence of bandgaps and therefore provide an alternative mechanism to confine light. Furthermore, we show that such BICs can propagate in a fiber geometry and exhibit arbitrarily small group velocity which could serve as a platform for enhancing non-linear effects and light-matter interactions in structured fibers.
Higher-order modes up to LP$_{33}$ are controllably excited in water-filled kagomé- and bandgap-style hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCF). A spatial light modulator is used to create amplitude and phase distributions that closely match those of the fiber modes, resulting in typical launch efficiencies of 10-20% into the liquid-filled core. Modes, excited across the visible wavelength range, closely resemble those observed in air-filled kagomé HC-PCF and match numerical simulations. Mode indices are obtained by launching plane-waves at specific angles onto the fiber input-face and comp…
A polymer/liquid crystal-based fiber Bragg grating (PLC-FBG) is fabricated with visible two-beam holography by photo-induced modulation of a pre-polymer/LC solution infiltrated into the hollow channels of a solid core photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The fabrication process and effects related to the photonic bandgap guidance into the infiltrated PCF, and characterization of the PLC-FBG are discussed. Experimental data here presented, demonstrate that the liquid crystal inclusions of the PLC-FBG lead to high thermal and bending sensitivities. The microscopic behavior of the polymer/liquid crystal…
Two-dimensional mono-elemental material is an excellent saturable absorber candidate with low saturation intensity, large modulation depth, high nonlinearities, and fast recovery time of excited carriers. Typically, these mono-elemental material with two-dimensional structure possesses tunable bandgap from metallic to semiconducting according to different number of layers. The successful application of these materials as the saturable absorber has exploited the development of mode-locked fiber lasers. Therefore, this review is intended to provide an up-to-date information to the development of…
The photonic crystal fibers (PCF) or air-silica microstructured fibers consist of a periodic array of dielectric transverse. By introducing a defect in this structure, it is possible to guide the light by a photonic bandgap effect, whose properties are different fundamentally from the guide by total internal reflection that takes place in conventional fibers. PCF with two cores have significant potential, and this is one of the main motivations witches led us to approach this theme in this article. Analysis of the inter-core coupling was also necessary to study the problem of crosstalk. Their …
Tunneling of optical pulses at 1.5 micron wavelength through double-barrier periodic fiber Bragg gratings is experimentally investigated. Tunneling time measurements as a function of barrier distance show that, far from the resonances of the structure, the transit time is paradoxically short, implying Superluminal propagation, and almost independent of the distance between the barriers. These results are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on phase time analysis and also provide an experimental evidence, in the optical context, of the analogous phenomenon expected in Quantum Mechan…
The advent of photonic bandgap (PBG) guiding hollow- core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) sparked the hope of guiding light with attenuation below the fundamental silica Rayleigh scattering limit (SRSL) of conventional step-index fibers. Unfortunately, the combination of the strong core-cladding optical-overlap, the surface roughness at the silica cladding struts and the presence of interface-modes limited the lowest reported transmission-loss to 1.2 dB/km at 1550 nm. This hope is recently revived by the introduction of hypocycloid core- contour (i.e. negative curvature) in inhibited-coupling …
Optomechanical systems offer new opportunities in quantum information processing and quantum sensing. Many solid-state quantum devices operate at millikelvin temperatures -- however, it has proven challenging to operate nanoscale optomechanical devices at these ultralow temperatures due to their limited thermal conductance and parasitic optical absorption. Here, we demonstrate a two-dimensional optomechanical crystal resonator capable of achieving large cooperativity $C$ and small effective bath occupancy $n_b$, resulting in a quantum cooperativity $C_{\text{eff}}\equiv C/n_b \approx 1.3 > 1$ …
In this paper, the forward and backward propagating modes in an optical waveguide structure namely the fiber Bragg filter also considered as a one dimensional photonic crystal, are analytically computed as a function of grating length for coupled optical modes. AlxGa1-xN/GaN material composition is considered as a unit block of the periodic organization, and refractive index of AlxGa1-xN/GaN is taken to be dependent on material composition, bandgap and operating wavelength following Adachi's model. Expressions of propagating wave are derived using coupled mode theory. Simulated results help us…
Non-degenerate two-photon absorption (TPA) is investigated in a nanophotonic silicon waveguide in a configuration such that the dispersion of the nonlinear absorption and refraction cannot be neglected. It is shown that a signal wave can strongly be absorbed by cross-TPA by interaction with a low energy pump pulse (1.2\,pJ), close to the half-bandgap and experiencing low nonlinear absorption. The experiments are very well reproduced by numerical simulations of two-coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations (GNLSE), validating the usual approximation made to compute the cross nonlinear…
The 2 μm waveband is an area that could have significant technological consequences, with applications ranging from spectroscopy, LIDAR and free-space communications. The development of the thulium-doped fiber amplifier, hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber and 2 μm GaSb-based diode lasers has highlighted the ability of the waveband in alleviating the fiber capacity crisis in the incumbent communication infrastructure. The above has initiated vibrant development in the silicon photonic-space at 2 μm, where the area is capable of enabling highly-integrated photonic circuits, and potentially at lo…
The tunable bandgap from 0.3 eV to 2 eV of black phosphorus (BP) makes it to fill the gap in graphene. When studying the properties of BP more comprehensive, scientists have discovered that many two-dimensional materials, such as tellurene, antimonene, bismuthene, indium selenide and tin sulfide, have similar structures and properties to black phosphorus thus called black phosphorus analogs. In this review, we briefly introduce preparation methods of black phosphorus and its analogs, with emphasis on the method of mechanical exfoliation (ME), liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) and chemical vapor d…
