A simple model is developed that quantitatively describes intense interactions of a VUV laser pulse with a xenon cluster. We find good agreement with a recent experiment [H. Wabnitz et al., Nature Vol. 420, 482 (2002)]. In particular, the large number of VUV photons absorbed per atom--at intensities significantly below 10^16 W/cm^2--is now understood.

The ionization dynamics of a Xenon cluster with 40 atoms is analyzed under a pum p probe scenario of laser pulses where an infrared laser pulse of 50 fs length follows with a well defined time delay a VUV pulse of the same length and peak intensity. The mechanism of resonant energy absorption due to the coinc idence of the IR laser frequency with the frequency of collective motion of quasi free electrons in the cluster is mapped out by varying the time delay between the pulses.
We investigate the wavelength dependent ionization, heating, and expansion dynamics of medium-sized rare-gas clusters (Ar$_{923}$) under intense femtosecond short-wavelength free electron laser pulses by quasi-classical molecular dynamics simulations. Kinetic Boltzmann equations are used to model the ionization and expansion dynamics of xenon clusters irradiated with short intense VUV pulses. This unified model includes predominant interactions that contribute to the cluster dynamics induced by this radiation. The quantum-classical hybrid-description of rare-gas clusters interacting with intense light pulses which we have developed is described in detail. Much emphasis is put on the treatment of screening electrons in the cluster which set the time scale for the evolution of the system and form the link between electrons strongly bound to ions and quasi-free plasma electrons in the cluster. As an example we discuss the dynamics of an Ar147 cluster exposed to a short VUV laser pulse of 20eV photon energy.

Energy spectra and angular distributions have been measured of electrons that are emitted upon disassembly of $Xe_{150000}$ following irradiation by intense (10$^{15}-10^{16}$ W cm$^{-2}$) laser pulses whose durations are varied over the 100-2200 fs range. Intense, ultrashort pulses of 800 nm laser light (12 fs, $\sim$4 optical cycles) of peak intensity 5$\times$10$^{14}$ W cm$^{-2}$ have been used to irradiate gas-phase Xe$_n$ clusters ($n$=500-25,000) so as to induce multiple ionization and subsequent Coulomb explosion. Energy distributions of exploding ions are measured in the few-cycle domain that does not allow sufficient time for the cluster to undergo Coulomb-driven expansion. Absolute Ar XK (3 keV) and Xe XL (4 keV) photon yields are measured as a function of laser peak intensity, for large (104 - 105 atoms) argon and xenon clusters submitted to intense laser pulses. A clear threshold behavior is observed. The intensity threshold is found as low as 2 1014 Wcm-2, a value matching the production of singly-charged argon or doubly-charged xenon by optical field ionization. Possible mechanisms involved in the inner-shell ionization are discussed. The outcome on the optimization of keV X-ray production is underlined.

We have recorded the coherent diffraction images of individual xenon clusters with intense extreme ultraviolet pulses to elucidate the influence of light-induced electronic changes on the diffraction pattern. Using the FLASH free-electron laser we tuned the wavelength to specific xenon atomic and ionic resonances. We have explored the light induced dynamics in superfluid helium nanodroplets with wide-angle scattering in a pump-probe measurement scheme. The droplets are doped with xenon atoms to facilitate the ignition of a nanoplasma through irradiation with near-infrared laser pulses. After a variable time delay of up to 800 ps, we image the subsequent dynamics using intense extreme ultraviolet pulses from the FERMI free-electron laser. We analyze the dynamics of up to $10^5$ electrons resulting from illuminating a Xenon cluster with 9093 atoms with intense laser pulses of different length and peak intensity. Interesting details of electron motion are identified which can be probed with a time resolution of 100 attoseconds. Corresponding experiments would shed light on unexplored territory in complex electronic systems such as clusters and they would also permit to critically access the present theoretical description of this dynamics.
