Optical near field has been generated by Laguarre-Gaussian doughnut beam on inner surface of "atom funnel". The resulting optical near field has been measured with the help of fiber probe and a consequent effect on cold atoms- released from MOT, has been estimated. Atoms with temperature less than 10 micro_kelvin can be reflected by the optical near field.
Doughnut shaped light beam has been generated from Gaussian mode ($TEM_{00}$) cw-Ti sapphire laser. After splitting the pump beam into two equal intensity components and introducing unequal convergence and phase delay while they are recombined it results in doughnut mode. Such a beam is tunable and have long propagation length. The evanescent field generated by 360 mW (at 780 nm wavelength) of such a beam creates optical field of 600 nm decay length with a 5.75 neV repulsive dipole potential. Thus cold Rb atoms (at 10{$μ$}K or less temperature) released from MOT can be reflected by the surface…
Displacement detection of a sphere particle in focused laser beams with quadrant photodetector (QPD) provides a fast and high precision way to determine the particle location. In contrast to the traditional Gaussian beams, the sensitivity of displacement detection using various doughnut beams are investigated. The sensitivity improvement for large sphere particles along the longitudinal direction is reported. With appropriate vortex charge $l$ of the doughnut beams, they can outperform the Gaussian beam to get more than one order higher sensitivity and thus have potential applications in vario…
Ultra-broadband long-period fiber grating with 10-dB bandwidth of 155 nm and 3-dB bandwidth of 415 nm is demonstrated around 1060 nm, which has been combined with a tunable ytterbium-doped fiber laser to generate optical doughnut beams in the spectral range from 1030 nm to 1099 nm, and the vector nature of generated optical fields are observed. The long-period fiber grating has also been used to transform the amplified spontaneous emission of an ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier into a broadband optical doughnut beam.
Optically levitated nanodiamonds with nitrogen-vacancy centers promise a high-quality hybrid spin-optomechanical system. However, the trapped nanodiamond absorbs energy form laser beams and causes thermal damage in vacuum. We propose to solve the problem by trapping a composite particle (a nanodiamond core coated with a less absorptive silica shell) at the center of strongly focused doughnut-shaped laser beams. Systematical study on the trapping stability, heat absorption, and oscillation frequency concludes that the azimuthally polarized Gaussian beam and the linearly polarized Laguerre-Gauss…
Radiation pressure forces in a focussed laser beam can be used to trap microscopic absorbing particles against a substrate. Calculations based on momentum transfer considerations show that stable trapping occurs before the beam waist, and that trapping is more effective with doughnut beams. Such doughnut beams can transfer angular momentum leading to rotation of the trapped particles. Energy is also transferred, which can result in heating of the particles to temperatures above the boiling point of the surrounding medium.
We show that an incoherent unpolarized single-beam illumination is able to photoinduce nano-doughnuts on the surface of azopolymer thin films. We demonstrate that individual doughnut-shaped nano-objects as well as clusters of several adjacent nano-doughnuts can be formed and tailored with wide range of typical sizes, thus providing a rich field for applications in nanophotonics and photochemistry.

Hollow Gaussian beams (HGB) are a special class of doughnut shaped beams that do not carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). Such beams have a wide range of applications in many fields including atomic optics, bio-photonics, atmospheric science, and plasma physics. Till date, these beams have been generated using linear optical elements. Here, we show a new way of generating HGBs by three-wave mixing in a nonlinear crystal. Based on nonlinear interaction of photons having OAM and conservation of OAM in nonlinear processes, we experimentally generated ultrafast HGBs of order as high as 6 and powe…

Point spread function (PSF) engineering of the emitter can code higher spatial frequency information of an image to break diffraction limit but suffer from the complexed optical systems. Here we present a robust strategy to simultaneously achieve diverse PSFs from upconversion nanoparticles under a single doughnut-shape scanning beam. By saturating the four-photon state, the high-frequency information can be extracted through the doughnut emission PSF. In contrast, the complementary lower frequency information can be carried out by the Gaussian-like emission PSF, as a result of over-saturated …
We theoretically investigate the process of coupling cold atoms into the core of a hollow-core photonic-crystal optical fiber using a blue-detuned Laguerre-Gaussian beam. In contrast to the use of a red-detuned Gaussian beam to couple the atoms, the blue-detuned hollow-beam can confine cold atoms to the darkest regions of the beam thereby minimizing shifts in the internal states and making the guide highly robust to heating effects. This single optical beam is used as both a funnel and guide to maximize the number of atoms into the fiber. In the proposed experiment, Rb atoms are loaded into a …
The applications of vortex beam in biomedical field are always hindered by light scattering of biological tissues. Recently wavefront shaping technology has shown the potential in focusing a structured light field through scattering media. Herein we have proposed a novel theory to describe the field transformation property of the opaque lens. This theory makes it possible to generate foci with specified amplitude and phase profiles by well-designing the incident field. We verify the validity of this theory by experimentally generating doughnut-shaped foci with various topological charges, and …
Counter-propagating co-axial Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams are considered, not in the familiar scenario where the focal planes coincide at $z=0$, but when they are separated by a finite axial distance $d$. The simplest case is where both beams are doughnut beams which have the same linear polarisation. The total fields of this system are shown to display novel amplitude and phase distributions and are shown to give rise to a ring or a finite ring lattice composed of double rings and single central ring. When the beams have slightly different frequencies the ring lattice pattern becomes a finite…
We explore a scheme for guiding cold atoms through a hollow Bessel beam generated by a single axicon and a lens from a 2D magneto-optical trap toward a science chamber. We compare the Bessel beam profiles measured along the optical axis to a numerical propagation of the beam's wavefront, and we show how it is affected by diffraction during the passage through a long narrow funnel serving as a differential pumping tube between the chambers. We derive an approximate analytic expression for the intensity distribution of the Bessel beam and the dipolar optical force acting on the atoms. By a Monte…
