Observation of Caustics in the Trajectories of Cold Atoms in a Linear Magnetic Potential

We have studied the spatial and temporal dynamics of a cold atom cloud in the conservative force field of a ferromagnetic guide, after laser cooling has been switched off suddenly. We observe outgoing 'waves' that correspond to caustics of individual trajectories of trapped atoms. This provides detailed information on the magnetic field, the energy distribution and the spin states.

A stochastic rainbow caustic observed with cold atoms

We report the direct observation of a novel type of rainbow caustic. In contrast to known examples, this caustic originates from a dissipative, stochastic process. We have observed this using cold ^{87}Rb atoms bouncing inelastically on an evanescent-wave atom mirror. The caustic appears as a sharp peak at the lower edge of the asymmetric velocity distribution of the bouncing atoms. The stochastic process is a spontaneous Raman transition due to photon scattering during the bounce. The results are in good agreement with a classical calculation.

Quantum caustics in resonance fluorescence trajectories

We employ phase-sensitive amplification to perform homodyne detection of the resonance fluorescence from a driven superconducting artificial atom. Entanglement between the emitter and its fluorescence allows us to track the individual quantum state trajectories of the emitter conditioned on the outcomes of the field measurements. Semiclassical Trajectory Perspective of Glory Rescattering in Strong-field Photoelectron Holography

We investigate theoretically the photoelectron momentum distribution (PMD) of the ionized atoms irradiated by a linearly polarized intense laser, focusing on the holography interference patterns in PMD that carry important information of the initial wavefunction of a tunneled electron and its experienced atomic potential in rescattering. 6-axis inertial sensor using cold-atom interferometry

We have developed an atom interferometer providing a full inertial base. This device uses two counter-propagating cold-atom clouds that are launched in strongly curved parabolic trajectories. Three single Raman beam pairs, pulsed in time, are successively applied in three orthogonal directions leading to the measurement of the three axis of rotation and acceleration. In this purpose, we introduce a new atom gyroscope using a butterfly geometry. We discuss the present sensitivity and the possible improvements.

The effect of Landau-Zener tunnelings on the nonlinear dynamics of cold atoms in a modulated laser field

We study the motion of a cold atom in a frequency-modulated standing laser wave. If the detuning between the atomic electronic transition and the field is large, the atom moves in a modulated optical potential demonstrating known classical nonlinear effects such as chaos and nonlinear resonances. Multimode collective scattering of light in free space by a cold atomic gas

We have studied collective recoil lasing by a cold atomic gas, scattering photons from an incident laser into many radiation modes in free space. The model consists of a system of classical equations for the atomic motion of N atoms, where the radiation field has been adiabatically eliminated.
