We connect an appropriate feedback loop to a model of 2D vertical eddy of airflow which unfolds a wide range of vorticity behavior. Computational fluid dynamics of the twisted roll display a class of long lifespan 3D vortices. On the one hand, the infinitely stable columnar vortex simulated describes waterspouts and tornadoes with extended lifetime. On the other hand, a light modification of the retroaction exhibits strong similarities to tropical cyclones. Moreover, we investigate the outcome of the twisting process vertically shifted. This modelisation leads to the simulation of simultaneous vortices associated to this other class of 3D vortices with short lifespan. Our heuristic dynamical systems lay the foundations of a comprehensive modelisation of vortices since it joins theory and numerical simulations.
This contribution relates to the simulation of the flow around the tip of a helicopter rotor blade in hovering flight conditions. We here propose a new methodology of framework adaptation, using a comprehensive rotor code and high-fidelity numerical simulations. We construct an equivalent fixed-wing configuration from a rotating blade, in which centrifugal and Coriolis forces are neglected. The effect of this approximation on the solution is analysed. The method is validated by a detailed comparison with wind tunnel data from the literature, concerning aerodynamic properties and tip vortex rol…
The non-dimensional energy of starting vortex rings typically converges to values around 0.33 when they are created by a cylinder piston or a bluff body translating at a constant speed. To explore the limits of the universality of this value and to analyse the variations that occur outside of those limits, we present an alternative approach to the slug-flow model to predict the non-dimensional energy of a vortex ring. Our approach is based on the self-similar vortex sheet roll-up described by Pullin. We derive the vorticity distribution for the vortex core resulting from a spiralling shear lay…
The transition from Tayor vortex flow to wavy-vortex flow is revisited. The Self-Sustaining Process (SSP) of Waleffe [Phys. Fluids 9, 883-900 (1997)] proposes that a key ingredient in transition to turbulence in wall-bounded shear flows is a three-step process involving rolls advecting streamwise velocity, leading to streaks which become unstable to a wavy perturbation whose nonlinear interaction with itself feeds the rolls. We investigate this process in Taylor-Couette flow. The instability of Taylor-vortex flow to wavy-vortex flow, a process which is the inspiration for the second phase of t…
When an object is accelerated in a fluid, a primary vortex is formed through the roll-up of a shear layer. This primary vortex does not grow indefinitely and will reach a limiting size and strength. Additional vorticity beyond the critical limit will end up in a trailing shear layer and accumulate into secondary vortices. The secondary vortices are typically considerably smaller than the primary vortex. Here, we focus on the formation, shedding, and trajectory of secondary vortices generated by a rotating rectangular plate in a quiescent fluid using time-resolved particle image velocimetry. Th…
This paper presents a new representation of curve dynamics, with applications to vortex filaments in fluid dynamics. Instead of representing these filaments with explicit curve geometry and Lagrangian equations of motion, we represent curves implicitly with a new co-dimensional 2 level set description. Our implicit representation admits several redundant mathematical degrees of freedom in both the configuration and the dynamics of the curves, which can be tailored specifically to improve numerical robustness, in contrast to naive approaches for implicit curve dynamics that suffer from overwhel…
Unstable shear layers in environmental and industrial flows roll up into a series of vortices, which often form complex nonlinear merging patterns like pairs and triplets. These patterns crucially determine the subsequent turbulence, mixing and scalar transport. We show that the late-time, highly nonlinear merging patterns are predictable from the linearized initial state. The initial asymmetry between consecutive wavelengths of the vertical velocity field provides an effective measure of the strength and pattern of vortex merging. The predictions of this measure are substantiated using direct…

Stationary longitudinal vortical rolls emerge in katabatic and anabatic Prandtl slope flows due to the dominance of the normal component of the buoyancy force over flow shear. Here, we further identify self pairing of these longitudinal rolls as a unique flow structure. The topology of the counter-rotating vortex pair bears a striking resemblance to speaker-wires and their interaction with each other is a precursor to further destabilization and breakdown of the flow field into smaller structures. On its own, a speaker-wire vortex retains its unique topology without any vortex reconnection or …
We investigate the various physical mechanisms that underlie the dynamical instability of a quantized vortex array at the interface between two counter-propagating superflows in a two-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensate. Instabilities of markedly different nature are found to dominate in different flow velocity regimes. For moderate velocities where the two flows are subsonic, the vortex lattice displays a quantized version of the hydrodynamic Kelvin--Helmholtz instability (KHI), with the vortices rolling up and co-rotating. For supersonic flow velocities, the oscillation involved in the KHI…
In this paper, we experimentally study the influence of large-scale Taylor rolls on the small-scale statistics and the flow organization in fully turbulent Taylor-Couette flow {for Reynolds numbers up to $\text{Re}_S=3\times 10^5$}. The velocity field in the gap confined by coaxial and independently rotating cylinders at a radius ratio of $η=0.714$ is measured using planar {particle image velocimetry} in horizontal planes at different cylinder heights. Flow regions with and without prominent Taylor vortices are compared. We show that the local angular momentum transport (expressed in terms of …
