We investigate numerically optical properties of novel two-dimensional photonic materials where parallel dielectric rods are randomly placed with the restriction that the distance between rods is larger than a certain value. A large complete photonic gap (PG) is found when rods have sufficient density and dielectric contrast. Our result shows that neither long-range nor short-range order is an essential prerequisite to the formation of PGs. A universal principle is proposed for designing arbitrarily shaped waveguides, where waveguides are fenced with side walls of periodic rods and surrounded by the novel photonic materials. We observe highly efficient transmission of light for various waveguides. Due to structural uniformity, the novel photonic materials are best suited for filling up the outer region of waveguides of arbitrary shape and dimension comparable with the wavelength.
In this paper, tooth-shaped and multiple-teeth-shaped plasmonic filters in the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides are demonstrated numerically. By introducing a three-port waveguide splitter, a modified model based on the multiple-beam-interference and the scattering matrix is given. The ransmittance spectrum as a function of teeth width, depth, period and period number are respectively addressed. The result shows the new structure not only performs the filtering function as well as MIM grating-like structures, but also is of submicrometer size for ultra-high integration and relatively eas…
We report on fabrication of tubular optical waveguides buried in ZBLAN glass based on transverse femtosecond laser direct writing. Irradiation in ZBLAN with focused femtosecond laser pulses leads to decrease of refractive index in the modified region. Tubular optical waveguides of variable mode areas are fabricated by forming the four sides of the cladding with slit-shaped femtosecond laser pulses, ensuring single mode waveguiding with a mode field dimension as small as ~ 4 μm.
A novel nanometeric plasmonic filter in a tooth-shaped Metal-Insulator-Metal waveguide is proposed and demonstrated numerically. An analytic model based on the scattering matrix method is given. The result reveals that the single tooth-shaped filter has a wavelength filtering characteristic and an ultra-compact size in the length of a few hundred nanometers, compared to grating-like SPPs filters. Both analytic and simulation results show that the wavelength of the trough of the transmission has linear and nonlinear relationships with the tooth depth and the tooth width, respectively. The waveg…
A design of all optical diode in $L$-shaped photonic crystal waveguide is proposed that uses the multistability of single nonlinear Kerr microcavity with two dipole modes. Asymmetry of the waveguide is achieved by difference in coupling of the dipole modes with the left and right legs of waveguide. By use of coupled mode theory we present domains in axis of light frequency and amplitude where an extremely high transmission contrast can be achieved. The direction of optical diode transmission can be governed by power and frequency of injecting light. The theory agrees with numerical solution of…
Optical trapping can be used to manipulate the three-dimensional (3-D) motion of spherical particles based on the simple prediction of optical forces and the responding motion of samples. However, controlling the 3-D behaviour of non-spherical particles with arbitrary orientations is extremely challenging, due to experimental difficulties and the extensive computations. Here, we achieved the real-time optical control of arbitrarily shaped particles by combining the wavefront shaping of a trapping beam and measurements of the 3-D refractive index (RI) distribution of samples. Engineering the 3-…
We identify a broad class of phonon modes with persistent vortex fluxes at arbitrarily slow propagating velocities in periodic nano-waveguides. Such phonon vortices are associated with the split band-edges in dispersion dependencies, which can be engineered by waveguide design. Modulations introduced in such waveguides can support a pair of defect cavity phonon modes with an arbitrarily small frequency splitting. These features can find applications for sensing and nano-manipulation.
We propose a mechanism for optical energy squeezing and anomalous light tunneling through arbitrarily-shaped plasmonic ultranarrow channels and bends connecting two larger plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguides. It is shown how a proper design of sub-wavelength optical channels at cut-off, patterned by plasmonic implants and connecting larger plasmonic waveguides, may allow enhanced resonant transmission, inspired by the anomalous properties of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials. The resonant tunneling is shown to be only weakly dependent on the channel length and its specific geometry,…
We present a theory for the cloaking of arbitrarily-shaped objects and demonstrate electromagnetic scattering-cancellation through designed homogeneous coatings. First, in the small-particle limit, we expand the dipole moment of a coated object in terms of its resonant modes. By zeroing the numerator of the resulting rational function, we accurately predict the permittivity values of the coating layer that abates the total scattered power. Then, we extend the applicability of the method beyond the small-particle limit, deriving the radiation corrections of the scattering-cancellation permittiv…
Investigation of laser matter interaction with electromagnetic codes requires to implement sources for the electromagnetic fields. A way to do so is to prescribe the fields at the numerical box boundaries in order to achieve the desired fields inside the numerical box. Here we show that the often used paraxial approximation can lead to unexpected field profiles with strong impact on the laser matter interaction results. We propose an efficient numerical algorithm to compute the required laser boundary conditions consistent with the Maxwell's equations for arbitrarily shaped, tightly focused la…
The extremely local electric field enhancement and light confinement is demonstrated in dielectric waveguide with corner and gap geometry. The numerical results reveal the local electric field enhancement in the vicinity of the apex of fan-shaped waveguide. Classical electromagnetic theory predicts that the field enhancement and confinement abilities increase with decreasing radius of rounded corner ($r$) and gap ($g$), and show singularity for infinitesimal $r$ and $g$. For practical parameters with $r=g=10\,\mathrm{nm}$, the mode area of opposing apex-to-apex fan-shaped waveguides can be as …
In media with strong spatial dispersion the electric displacement vector and the electric field are typically linked by a partial differential equation in the bulk region. The objective of this work is to highlight that in the vicinity of an interface the relation between the macroscopic fields cannot be univocally determined from the bulk response of the involved materials, but requires instead the knowledge of internal degrees of freedom of the materials. We derive such relation for the particular case of "wire media", and describe a numerical formalism that enables characterizing the electr…
Meta-atoms, nano-antennas, plasmonic particles and other small scatterers are commonly modeled in terms of their modes. However these modal solutions are seldom determined explicitly, due to the conceptual and numerical difficulties in solving eigenvalue problems for open systems with strong radiative losses. Here these modes are directly calculated from Maxwell's equations expressed in integral operator form, by finding the complex frequencies which yield a homogenous solution. This gives a clear physical interpretation of the modes, and enables their conduction or polarization current distri…
According to the hydrodynamic Drude model, surface-plasmon resonances of metallic nanostructures blueshift owing to the nonlocal response of the metal's electron gas. The screening length characterising the nonlocal effect is often small relative to the overall dimensions of the metallic structure, which enables us to derive a coarse-grained nonlocal description using matched asymptotic expansions; a perturbation theory for the blueshifts of arbitrary shaped nanometallic structures is then developed. The effect of nonlocality is not always a perturbation and we present a detailed analysis of t…
We report on a joint theoretical and experimental study of an integrated photonic device consisting of a single mode waveguide vertically coupled to a disk-shaped microresonator. Starting from the general theory of open systems, we show how the presence of a neighboring waveguide induces reactive inter-mode coupling in the resonator, analogous to an off-diagonal Lamb shift from atomic physics. Observable consequences of this coupling manifest as peculiar Fano lineshapes in the waveguide transmission spectra. The theoretical predictions are validated by full vectorial 3D finite element numerica…
We demonstrate experimentally the existence of compact localized states (CLSs) in a quasi-one-dimensional photonic rhombic lattice in presence of two distinct refractive-index gradients (i.e., a driven lattice ribbon) acting as external direct current (dc) electric fields. Such a lattice is composed of an array of periodically arranged evanescently coupled waveguides, which hosts a perfect flatband that touches both remaining dispersive bands when it is not driven. The external driving is realized by modulating the relative writing beam intensity of adjacent waveguides. We find that a y-gradie…
We derive the expressions for the anisotropic heterogeneous tensors of permittivity and perme- ability associated with two-dimensional and three-dimensional carpets of an arbitrary shape. In the former case, we map a segment onto smooth curves whereas in the latter case we map a non convex region of the plane onto smooth surfaces. Importantly, these carpets display no singularity of the permeability and permeability tensor components, and this may lead to some broadband cloaking.
Spectral analysis is performed on the Born equation, a strongly singular integral equation modeling the interactions between electromagnetic waves and arbitrarily shaped dielectric scatterers. Compact and Hilbert--Schmidt operator polynomials are constructed from the Green operator of electromagnetic scattering on scatterers with smooth boundaries. As a consequence, it is shown that the strongly singular Born equation has a discrete spectrum, and that the spectral series $ \sum_λ|λ|^2|1+2λ|^4$ is convergent, counting multiplicities of the eigenvalues $ λ$. This reveals a shape-independent opti…

Inefficient coupling between dielectric guided mode and plasmon mode has been overlooked in the past. The mechanism in it is essentially different from the conventional coupling between dielectric modes. Based on qualitative theoretical analysis, we proposed two methods to strengthen the coupling between dielectric waveguide modes and exterior plasmon whispering gallery modes. One is using a U-shaped bent waveguide to break the adiabatic mode conversion process, and the other is to render the dielectric mode of higher-order to reach phase matching with plasmon mode. Both the transmission spect…
Entangled photons generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion inside a nonlinear crystal exhibit a complex spatial photon count distribution. A quantitative description of this distribution helps with the interpretation of experiments that depend on this structure. We developed a theoretical model and an accompanying numerical calculation that includes the effects of phase matching and the crystal properties to describe a wide range of spatial effects in two-photon experiments. The numerical calculation was tested against selected analytical approximations. We furthermore performed a d…
The absolute instruments like the Maxwell's fisheye (MFE) lens with aberration-free imaging properties have found interesting applications such as waveguide crossing. The flat wavefront of an optical wave in the waveguide does not match with the circular wavefront of the circular MFE lens at its edge, hence, we design and study the performance of a square MFE lens as photonic crystal waveguide crossing medium. We also have truncated the square MFE lens to a cross-shaped lens to squeeze it inside the crossing waveguides, therefore, practically no extra footprint is consumed by the truncated MFE…
We design an efficient coupler to transmit light from a strip waveguide into the flatband slow mode of a photonic crystal waveguide with ring-shaped holes. The coupler is a section of a photonic crystal waveguide with a higher group velocity, obtained by different ring dimensions. We demonstrate coupling efficiency in excess of 95% over the 8 nm wavelength range where the photonic crystal waveguide exhibits a quasi constant group velocity vg = c/37. An analysis based on the small Fabry-Pérot resonances in the simulated transmission spectra is introduced and used for studying the effect of the …
We propose a new graphene-based THz circulator. It consists of a circular graphene resonator and three graphene nanoribbon waveguides of W-geometry placed on a dilectric substrate. Surface plasmon-polariton waves propagate in the waveguides. The nanoribbon excites in the resonator dipole resonance. Nonreciprocity of the device is defined by nonsymmetry of the conductivity tensor of the magnetized graphene. The circulator with the central frequency 7.5 THz has the bandwidth 4.25\% for isolation -15 dB, insertion loss -2.5 dB. Applied DC magnetic field is 0.56T and Fermi energy of graphene $ε_F=…
We experimentally demonstrate that the next-nearest-neighbor(NNN)coupling in an array of waveguides can naturally be negative. To do so, dielectric zig-zag shaped waveguide arrays are fabricated with direct laser writing (DLW). By changing the angle of the zig-zag shape it is possible to tune between positive and negative ratios of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor coupling, which also allows to reduce the impact of the NNN-coupling to zero at the correct respective angle. We describe how the correct higher order coupling constants in tight-binding models can be derived, based on non-orthogona…
We present the design of a compact and highly sensitive electric field sensor based on a bowtie antenna-coupled slot photonic crystal waveguide (PCW). An electro-optic (EO) polymer with a large EO coefficient, r33=100pm/V, is used to refill the PCW slot and air holes. Bowtie-shaped electrodes are used as both poling electrodes and as receiving antenna. The slow-light effect in the PCW is used to increase the effective in-device r33>1000pm/V. The slot PCW is designed for low-dispersion slow light propagation, maximum poling efficiency as well as optical mode confinement inside the EO polymer. T…
We present a self-consistent quantum optics approach to calculating the surface enhanced Raman spectrum of molecules coupled to arbitrarily shaped plasmonic systems. Our treatment is intuitive to use and provides fresh analytical insight into the physics of the Raman scattering near metallic surfaces and can be applied to a wide range of geometries including resonators, waveguides, as well as hybrid photonic-plasmonic systems. Our general theory demonstrates that the detected Raman spectrum originates from an interplay between nonlinear light generation and propagation. Counter intuitively, at…
Nonlocal effects have been shown to be responsible for a variety of non-trivial optical effects in small-size plasmonic nanoparticles, beyond classical electrodynamics. However, it is not clear whether optical mode descriptions can be applied to such extreme confinement regimes. Here, we present a powerful and intuitive quasinormal mode description of the nonlocal optical response for three-dimensional plasmonic nanoresonators. The nonlocal hydrodynamical model and a generalized nonlocal optical response model for plasmonic nanoresonators are used to construct an intuitive modal theory and to …
Lasers that operate in the visible wavelength range and can be easily integrated on a chip together with photonic integrated circuits are of particular interest for biophotonic applications. We present a new class of laser sources that emit at 600 nm wavelength and can be efficiently integrated on the $\mathrm{Si}_3\mathrm{N}_4$ platform using low-cost fabrication techniques. The $\mathrm{Si}_3\mathrm{N}_4$-organic hybrid lasers are optically pumped from top without the need of a precise alignment. We investigate different laser geometries based on spiral shaped ring resonators and distributed…
Multi-photon lithography allows to complement planar photonic integrated circuits (PIC) by in-situ 3D-printed freeform waveguide structures. However, design and optimization of such freeform waveguides using time-domain Maxwell's equations solvers often requires comparatively large computational volumes, within which the structure of interest only occupies a small fraction, thus leading to poor computational efficiency. In this paper, we present a solver-independent transformation-optics-(TO-) based technique that allows to greatly reduce the computational effort related to modeling of 3D free…
In this article, we examine plasmon induced transparency (PIT) effect in a parallel plate waveguide (PPWG) comprising of two similar pyramidal shaped grooves. One of the grooves is filled with air, while the other is filled with a dielectric material whose refractive index can be varied. The resonant frequencies corresponding to the air and dielectric grooves in the proposed configuration results in the transparency window which can be modulated with the refractive index of the dielectric material. The approach provides flexibility to actively control transparency effect in a waveguide configu…
Fundamental to integrated photonic quantum computing is an on-chip method for routing and modulating quantum light emission. We demonstrate a hybrid integration platform consisting of arbitrarily designed waveguide circuits and single photon sources. InAs quantum dots (QD) embedded in GaAs are bonded to an SiON waveguide chip such that the QD emission is coupled to the waveguide mode. The waveguides are SiON core embedded in a SiO2 cladding. A tuneable Mach Zehnder modulates the emission between two output ports and can act as a path-encoded qubit preparation device. The single photon nature o…
We propose to construct a nonreciprocal single-photon frequency converter via multiple semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides (CRWs). We first demonstrate that the frequency of a single photon can be converted nonreciprocally through two CRWs, which are coupled indirectly by optomechanical interactions with two nondegenerate mechanical modes. Based on such nonreciprocity, two different single-photon circulators are proposed in the T-shaped waveguides consisting of three semi-infinite CRWs, which are coupled in pairwise by optomechanical interactions. One circulator is proposed by using two…
At the core of an ideal single photon detector is an active material that ideally absorbs and converts photons to discriminable electronic signals. A large active material volume favours high-efficiency absorption, but often at the expense of conversion efficiency, noise, speed and timing accuracy. The present work demonstrates how the concept of coherent perfect absorption can be used to relax this trade-off for a waveguide-integrated superconducting nanowire single photon detector. A very short (8.5$μ$m long) and narrow (8$\times$35nm$^2$) U-shaped NbTiN nanowire atop a silicon-on-insulator …
