We analyze transmission of a layered photonic structure (a one-dimensional photonic crystal) consisting of alternating slabs of two materials with positive and negative refractive index. For the periodic structure with zero averaged refractive index, we demonstrate a number of unique properties of the beam transmission observed in strong beam modification and reshaping.

We demonstrate numerically a method of focusing two-photon field inside one-dimensional random media. The approach is based on coherent control of backscattering achieved by adaptive spectral pulse shaping. The spectral phases of a femtosecond laser pulse are adjusted for the constructive interference of its backward-traveling components, resulting in an enhanced reflection from within the random system. We explore the optical properties of periodic layered media containing left-handed metamaterials. This study is based on several analogies between the propagation of light in metamaterials and charge transport in graphene. We present here the transmission of electromagnetic waves through layered structures of metallic and left-handed media. Based on the theory of finite periodic systems, we show that besides the strong influence of the incidence angle, the low transmission characteristic of a single conductor slab, for frequencies $ω$ below the plasma frequency $ω_p$, becomes in this domain highly oscillating.
