We model the effects of cross-phase modulation in frequency (or wavelength) division multiplexed optical communications systems, using a Schrödinger equation with a spatially and temporally random potential. Green's functions for the propagation of light in this system are calculated using Feynman path-integral and diagrammatic techniques. This propagation leads to a non-Gaussian joint distribution of the input and output optical fields. We use these results to determine the amplitude and timing jitter of a signal pulse and to estimate the system capacity in analog communication.
Spatio-temporally modulated impedance surfaces can be good candidates for generation of radiating waves with arbitrary eigenstates by breaking momentum and energy conservations. Here, we present a theoretical framework based on the holographic technique and generalized Floquet-wave expansion to analyze spatio-temporally modulated impedance surfaces. The holographic technique estimates the required impedance distribution to achieve the desired momentum. Injecting temporal modulation deviates the eigenvalues and changes the radiation frequency. Using the proposed analytical model, the eigenvalue…
In this paper, the aperture field estimation technique and generalized adiabatic Floquet-wave expansion method is developed for two-dimensional temporally modulated anisotropic holograms. The determinant equations for propagation eigenstates in the presence of space-time modulation are obtained, and the behaviors of the corresponding dispersion curves are investigated. Injecting temporal modulation causes asymmetrical displacement of the dispersion curve, which is studied in detail in this paper. The consequence of temporal modulation is the Doppler-shift effect and nonreciprocal response obse…
We study the presence of exact localized solutions in a quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inhomogeneous nonlinearities. Using a specific ansatz, we transform the nonautonomous nonlinear equation into an autonomous one, which engenders composed states corresponding to solutions localized in space, with an oscillating behavior in time. Direct numerical simulations are employed to verify the stability of the modulated solutions against small random perturbations.
To explore resonance phenomena in the nonlinear region, we show by experimental measurements and theoretical analyses that resonance happens in modulation instability (MI) from non-instantaneous nonlinearities in photorefractive crystals. With a temporally periodic modulation in the external bias voltage, corresponding to a modulation in the nonlinear strength, an enhancement in the visibility of MI at resonant frequency is reported through spontaneous optical pattern formations. Modeled by such temporally periodic nonlinear driving force to the system, theoretical curves obtained from a nonli…
The nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients has applications in numerous areas of physics, specifically in the context of nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensate. Apart from the usual bright and dark-soliton solutions, the so-called rational soliton solutions are perceived to have tremendous impact in futuristic applications and understanding many natural phenomena. In this work, we have studied various orders of rational solution of the variable coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It is possible to extract the first and the second-order controlled KM-like breath…
We present an experimental study of the effects of temporal modulation of the pump intensity on a random laser. The nanosecond pump pulses exhibit rapid intensity fluctuations which differ from pulse to pulse. Specific temporal profiles of the pump pulses produce extraordinarily strong emission from the random laser. This process is deterministic and insensitive to the spatial configuration of the scatterers and spontaneous emission noise.
The measurement of weak temporal phase for picosecond and nanosecond laser pulses is important but quite difficult. We propose a simple iterative algorithm, which is based on a temporally movable phase modulation process, to retrieve the weak temporal phase of laser pulses. This unambiguous method can achieve a high accuracy and simultaneously measure the weak temporal phase and temporal profile of pulses, which are almost transform-limited. Detailed analysis shows that this iterative method has valuable potential applications in the characterization of pulses with weak temporal phase.
We theoretically investigate the phenomenon of modulation instability for systems obeying nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which are under the influence of an external homogeneous synthetic magnetic field. For an initial condition, the instability is detected numerically by comparing dynamics with and without a small initial perturbation; the perturbations are characterized in a standard fashion by wavevectors in momentum space. We demonstrate that the region of (in)stability in momentum space, as well as time-evolution in real space, for identical initial conditions, depend on the choice of th…
Solitons on a finite a background, also called breathers, are solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which play a pivotal role in the description of rogue waves and modulation instability. The breather family includes Akhmediev breathers (AB), Kuznetsov-Ma (KM), and Peregrine solitons (PS), which have been successfully exploited to describe several physical effects. These families of solutions are actually only particular cases of a more general three-parameter class of solutions originally derived by Akhmediev, Eleonskii and Kulagin [Theor. Math. Phys. {\bf 72}, 809--818 (1…
The influence of a saturable nonlinearity on the modulation instability in oppositely directed coupler in the presence of high-order effects is investigated. By using the standard linear stability analysis, we obtain the instability gain that exhibits a significant change in the bands of instability due to the effects of a saturable nonlinearity. We also show that even in the presence of saturation there is no change in instability gain when we compare the results obtained for both channels not influenced by self-steepening effect or for both channels influenced by self-steepening effect but o…
We study modulational instability (MI) in optical fibers with random group-velocity dispersion (GVD). We consider Gaussian and dichotomous colored stochastic processes. We resort to different analytical methods (namely, the cumulant expansion and the functional approach) and assess their reliability in estimating the MI gain of stochastic origin. If the power spectral density (PSD) of the GVD fluctuations is centered at null wavenumber, we obtain low-frequency MI sidelobes which converge to those given by a white noise perturbation when the correlation length tends to 0. If instead the stochas…
We derive the Whitham modulation equations for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the plane (2d NLS) with small dispersion. The modulation equations are derived in terms of both physical and Riemann variables; the latter yields equations of hydrodynamic type. The complete 2d NLS Whitham system consists of six dynamical equations in evolutionary form and two constraints. As an application, we determine the linear stability of one-dimensional traveling waves. In both the elliptic and hyperbolic case, the traveling waves are found to be unstable. This result is consistent with all previous inv…
The nonlinear stage of modulational instability in optical fibers induced by a wide and easily accessible class of localized perturbations is studied using the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. It is showed that the development of associated spatio-temporal patterns is strongly affected by the shape and the parameters of the perturbation. Different scenarios are presented that involve an auto-modulation developing in a characteristic wedge, possibly coexisting with breathers which lie inside or outside the wedge.
We investigate a generalized coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (GCNLS) equation containing Self-Phase Modulation (SPM), Cross-Phase Modulation (XPM) and Four Wave Mixing (FWM) describing the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through an optical fibre and generate the associated Lax-pair. We then construct bright solitons employing gauge transformation approach. The collisional dynamics of bright solitons indicates that it is not only possible to manipulate intensity (energy) between the two modes (optical beams), but also within a given mode unlike the Manakov model which does not have the s…
We present stable bright solitons built of coupled unstaggered and staggered components in a symmetric system of two discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations with the attractive self-phase-modulation (SPM) nonlinearity, coupled by the repulsive cross-phase-modulation (XPM) interaction. These mixed modes are of a "symbiotic" type, as each component in isolation may only carry ordinary unstaggered solitons. The results are obtained in an analytical form, using the variational and Thomas-Fermi approximations (VA and TFA), and the generalized Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) criterion for the evalua…
To study the dynamical optical interactions of nano-scaled metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures in temporal-frequency domain, femtosecond surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wave packets propagate over a surface with a MIM structure. The resonance nature of the SPP-cavity interaction is reflected as strong modulations in the spectra of transmitted and reflected SPP wavepackets, which show peaks and valleys, respectively, corresponding to the MIM cavity's eigenmode. These features indicate that the MIM structure acts as a Fabry-Perot etalon-type spectrum filter. With appropriate tuning of the res…
We revisit the collisional dynamics of bright solitons in the coupled Nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We observe that apart from the intensity redistribution in the interaction of bright solitons, one also witnesses a rotation of the trajectories of bright solitons . The angle of rotation can be varied by suitably manipulating the Self-Phase Modulation (SPM) or Cross Phase Modulation (XPM) parameters. The rotation of the trajectories of the bright solitons arises due to the excess energy that is injected into the dynamical system through SPM or XPM. This extra energy not only contributes to the…
In addition to deep-water rogue waves which develop from the modulation instability of an optical CW, wave propagation in optical fibers may also produce shallow water rogue waves. These extreme wave events are generated in the modulationally stable normal dispersion regime. A suitable phase or frequency modulation of a CW laser leads to chirp-free and flat-top pulses or flaticons which exhibit a stable self-similar evolution. Upon collision, flaticons at different carrier frequencies, which may also occur in wavelength division multiplexed transmission systems, merge into a single, high-inten…
We study scalar and vector modulation instabilities induced by the vacuum fluctuations in birefringent optical fibers. To this end, stochastic coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations are derived. The stochastic model is equivalent to the quantum field operators equations and allow for dispersion, nonlinearity, and arbitrary level of birefringence. Numerical integration of the stochastic equations is compared to analytical formulas in the case of scalar modulation instability and non depleted pump approximation. The effect of classical noise and its competition with vacuum fluctuations for indu…
We report the observation of modulation instability in the mid-infrared spectral region by pumping a hybrid polymer-chalcogenide optical microwire with a femtosecond optical parametric oscillator operating at 2.6 μm. It is further shown that this modulation instability occurs in the normal dispersion regime through negative fourth-order dispersion and leads to far detuned parametric frequency conversion at 2 μm and 3.5 μm, despite the presence of a strong absorption band around 2.8 μm. Stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation simulations of mid-infrared modulation instability are in excellent…
We report a detailed experimental study of vector modulation instability in highly birefringent optical fibers in the anomalous dispersion regime. We prove that the observed instability is mainly induced by vacuum fluctuations. The detuning of the spectral peaks agrees with linear perturbation analysis. The exact shape of the spectrum is well reproduced by numerical integration of stochastic nonlinear Schrodinger equations describing quantum propagation.
We investigate multi-wave mixing associated with the strongly pump depleted regime of induced modulation instability (MI) in optical fibers. For a complete transfer of pump power into the sideband modes, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that it is necessary to use a much lower seeding modulation frequency than the peak MI gain value. Our analysis shows that a record 95 % of the input pump power is frequency converted into the comb of sidebands, in good quantitative agreement with analytical predictions based on the simplest exact breather solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger eq…
An effort was conducted to numerically determine, using the Nonlinear Schrodinger Split-Step Fourier method, if using cross phase modulation could cause temporal soliton pulse propagation in a silicon slow-light photonic crystal waveguide shorter than a millimeter. The simulations demonstrated that due to the higher powers and shorter scales of photonic crystals, two-photon absorption would cause an optical soliton pulse to be extremely dissipative. The model demonstrated, however, that by utilizing cross-phase modulation, it is possible to sustain a compressed soliton pulse within a silicon p…
Exact solutions for the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with inhomogeneous complex linear and nonlinear potentials are found. We have found localized and periodic solutions for a wide class of localized and periodic modulations in the space of complex potentials and nonlinearity coefficients. Examples of stable and unstable solutions are given. We also demonstrated numerically the existence of stable dissipative breathers in the presence of an additional parabolic trap.
Spatiotemporal pulse shaping provides control over the trajectory and range of an intensity peak. While this control can enhance laser-based applications, the optical configurations required for shaping the pulse can constrain the transverse or temporal profile, duration, or orbital angular momentum (OAM). Here we present a novel technique for spatiotemporal control that mitigates these constraints by using a "stencil" pulse to spatiotemporally structure a second, primary pulse through cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a Kerr lens. The temporally shaped stencil pulse induces a time-dependent foc…
We present numerical simulations of high-order harmonic generation in helium using a temporally synthesised and spatially non-homogeneous strong laser field. The combination of temporal and spatial laser field synthesis results in a dramatic cut-off extension far beyond the usual semiclassical limit. Our predictions are based on the convergence of three complementary approaches: resolution of the three dimensional Time Dependent Schrödinger Equation, time-frequency analysis of the resulting dipole moment and classical trajectories extraction. Employing a combination of temporally and spatially…
We study the existence and properties of rogue wave solutions in different nonlinear wave evolution models that are commonly used in optics and hydrodynamics. In particular, we consider Fokas-Lenells equation, the defocusing vector nolinear Schrödinger equation, and the long-wave-short-wave resonance equation. We show that rogue wave solutions in all of these models exist in the subset of parameters where modulation instability is present, if and only if the unstable sideband spectrum also contains cw or zero-frequency perturbations as a limiting case (baseband instability). We numerically con…
