Annihilation cross-section of ultra low-energy atomic antihydrogen ($% E\le10^{-5}$ a.u.) on atomic hydrogen are calculated within a quantum mechanical coupled channels approach. The results differ from the extrapolations of semiclassical models to low energies. The main features of the observables are found to be determined by a family of $H\bar{H}$ nearthreshold states.

Low-temperature antihydrogen-atom scattering

A simple method to include the strong force in atom-antiatom scattering is presented. It is based on the strong-force scatteringn length between the nucleon and antinucleon. Using this method elastic and annihilation cross sections are calculated for hydrogen-antihydrogen and helium-antihydrogen scattering. The results are compared to first-order perturbation theory using a pseudo potential. The pseudo-potential approach works fairly well for hydrogen-antihydrogen scattering, but fails for helium-antihydrogen scattering where strong-force effects are more prominent.

Excited states of the helium-antihydrogen system

Potential energy curves for excited leptonic states of the helium-antihydrogen system are calculated within Ritz' variational approach. An explicitly correlated ansatz for the leptonic wave function is employed describing accurately the motion of the leptons (two electrons and positron) in the field of the helium nucleus and of the antiproton with arbitrary orbital angular momentum projection $Λ$ onto the internuclear axis. Antihydrogen and mirror-trapped antiproton discrimination: Discriminating between antihydrogen and mirror-trapped antiprotons in a minimum-B trap

Recently, antihydrogen atoms were trapped at CERN in a magnetic minimum (minimum-B) trap formed by superconducting octupole and mirror magnet coils. The trapped antiatoms were detected by rapidly turning off these magnets, thereby eliminating the magnetic minimum and releasing any antiatoms contained in the trap. Once released, these antiatoms quickly hit the trap wall, whereupon the positrons and antiprotons in the antiatoms annihilated. Detecting Antihydrogen: The Challenges and the Applications

ATHENA's first detection of cold antihydrogen atoms relied on their annihilation signatures in a sophisticated particle detector. We will review the features of the ATHENA detector and its applications in trap physics. The detector for a new experiment ALPHA will have considerable challenges due to increased material thickness in the trap apparatus as well as field non-uniformity. Our studies indicate that annihilation vertex imaging should be still possible despite these challenges. An alternative method for trapped antihydrogen, via electron impact ionization, will be also discussed.

We present the results of an experiment to search for trapped antihydrogen atoms with the ALPHA antihydrogen trap at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator. A cryogenic tracking detector for antihydrogen detection in the AEgIS experiment

We present the commissioning of the Fast Annihilation Cryogenic Tracker detector (FACT), installed around the antihydrogen production trap inside the 1 T superconducting magnet of the AEgIS experiment. FACT is designed to detect pions originating from the annihilation of antiprotons. Its 794 scintillating fibers operate at 4 K and are read out by silicon photomultipliers (MPPCs) at near room temperature. The main properties of the interaction of ultra low-energy antiprotons ($% E\le10^{-6}$ a.u.) with atomic hydrogen are established. Spectroscopy of antihydrogen has the potential to yield high-precision tests of the CPT theorem and shed light on the matter-antimatter imbalance in the Universe.
