It is shown how various ideas that are well established for the solution of Poisson's equation using plane wave and multigrid methods can be combined with wavelet concepts. The combination of wavelet concepts and multigrid techniques turns out to be particularly fruitful. We propose a modified multigrid V cycle scheme that is not only much simpler, but also more efficient than the standard V cycle. Whereas in the traditional V cycle the residue is passed to the coarser grid levels, this new scheme does not require the calculation of a residue. Instead it works with copies of the charge density on the different grid levels that were obtained from the underlying charge density on the finest grid by wavelet transformations. This scheme is not limited to the pure wavelet setting, where it is faster than the preconditioned conjugate gradient method, but equally well applicable for finite difference discretizations.
The multigrid algorithm is a multilevel approach to accelerate the numerical solution of discretized differential equations in physical problems involving long-range interactions. Multiresolution analysis of wavelet theory provides an efficient representation of functions which exhibit localized bursts of short length-scale behavior. Applications such as computing the electrostatic field in and around a molecule should benefit from both approaches. In this work, we demonstrate how a novel interpolating wavelet transform, which in itself is the synthesis of finite element analysis and wavelet t…
We present applications of variational -- wavelet approach to different forms of nonlinear (rational) rms envelope equations. We have the representation for beam bunch oscillations as a multiresolution (multiscales) expansion in the base of compactly supported wavelet bases.
We revise the Levy's construction of Brownian motion as a simple though still rigorous approach to operate with various Gaussian processes. A Brownian path is explicitly constructed as a linear combination of wavelet-based "geometrical features" at multiple length scales with random weights. Such a wavelet representation gives a closed formula mapping of the unit interval onto the functional space of Brownian paths. This formula elucidates many classical results about Brownian motion (e.g., non-differentiability of its path), providing intuitive feeling for non-mathematicians. The illustrative…
We present a wavelet-based adaptive method for computing 3D multiscale flows in complex, time-dependent geometries, implemented on massively parallel computers. While our focus is on simulations of flapping insects, it can be used for other flow problems, including turbulence, as well. The incompressible fluid is modeled with an artificial compressibility approach in order to avoid solving elliptical problems. No-slip and in/outflow boundary conditions are imposed using volume penalization. The governing equations are discretized on a locally uniform Cartesian grid with centered finite differe…
The simulation of problems in kinetic plasma physics are often challenging due to strongly coupled phenomena across multiple scales. In this work, we propose a wavelet-based coarse-grained numerical scheme, based on the framework of Equation-Free Projective Integration, for a kinetic plasma system modeled by the Vlasov-Poisson equations. A kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code is used to simulate the meso scale dynamics for short time intervals. This allows the extrapolation over long time-steps of the behavior of a coarse wavelet-based discretization of the system. To validate the approach and …
We consider the applications of a numerical-analytical approach based on multiscale variational wavelet technique to the systems with collective type behaviour described by some forms of Vlasov-Poisson/Maxwell equations. We calculate the exact fast convergent representations for solutions in high-localized wavelet-like bases functions, which correspond to underlying hidden (coherent) nonlinear eigenmodes. This helps to control stability/unstability scenario of evolution in parameter space on pure algebraical level.
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large-scale eruptions of plasma and magnetic feld that can produce adverse space weather at Earth and other locations in the Heliosphere. Due to the intrinsic multiscale nature of features in coronagraph images, wavelet and multiscale image processing techniques are well suited to enhancing the visibility of CMEs and supressing noise. However, wavelets are better suited to identifying point-like features, such as noise or background stars, than to enhancing the visibility of the curved form of a typical CME front. Higher order multiscale techniques, such as ri…
We present the applications of variational--wavelet approach for computing multiresolution/multiscale representation for solution of some approximations of Vlasov-Maxwell equations.
We present applications of variational-wavelet approach to nonlinear (rational) rms envelope equations. We have the solution as a multiresolution (multiscales) expansion in the base of compactly supported wavelet basis. We give extension of our results to the cases of periodic beam motion and arbitrary variable coefficients. Also we consider more flexible variational method which is based on biorthogonal wavelet approach.
We consider an application of modification of our variational-wavelet approach to some nonlinear collective model of beam/plasma physics: Vlasov/Boltzmann-like reduction from general BBGKY hierachy related to modeling of propagation of intense charged particle beams in high-intensity accelerators and transport systems. We use fast convergent multiscale variational-wavelet representations for solutions which allow to consider polynomial and rational type of nonlinearities. The solutions are represented via the multiscale decomposition in nonlinear high-localized eigenmodes (waveletons). In cont…
It is demonstrated that the wavelets can be used to considerably speed up simulations of the wave packet propagation in multiscale systems. Extremely high efficiency is obtained in the representation of both bound and continuum states. The new method is compared with the fast Fourier algorithm. Depending on ratios of typical scales of a quantum system in question, the wavelet method appears to be faster by a few orders of magnitude.
We present the applications of wavelet analysis methods in constrained variational framework to calculation of dynamical aperture. We construct represention via exact nonlinear high-localized periodic eigenmodes expansions, which allows to control contribution to motion from each scale of underlying multiscale structure and consider qualitative approach to the problem.
We consider some reduction from nonlinear Vlasov-Maxwell equation to rms/rate equations for second moments related quantities. Our analysis is based on variational wavelet approach to rational (in dynamical variables) approximation. It allows to control contribution from each scale of underlying multiscales and represent solutions via multiscale exact nonlinear eigenmodes (waveletons) expansions. Our approach provides the possibility to work with well-localized bases in phase space and best convergence properties of the corresponding expansions without perturbations or/and linearization proced…
We consider modeling for strong-strong beam-beam interactions beyond preceding linearized/perturbative methods such as soft gaussian approximation or FMM (HFMM) etc. In our approach discrete coherent modes, discovered before, and possible incoherent oscillations appear as a result of multiresolution/multiscale fast convergent decomposition in the bases of high-localized exact nonlinear modes represented by wavelets or wavelet packets functions. The constructed solutions represent the full multiscale spectrum in all internal hidden scales from slow to fast oscillating eigenmodes. Underlying var…
The multiscale complexity of modern problems in computational science and engineering can prohibit the use of traditional numerical methods in multi-dimensional simulations. Therefore, novel algorithms are required in these situations to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) with features evolving on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. To meet these challenges, we present a multiresolution wavelet algorithm to solve PDEs with significant data compression and explicit error control. We discretize in space by projecting fields and spatial derivative operators onto wavelet basis fu…
