A new mechanism of double-component convection is discovered. It emerges in a horizontal layer of Boussinesq fluid as a stable stratification due to flux boundary conditions is added to an unstable gradient specified by fixed boundary values. A large enough perturbation substantially decreases the stable flux gradient but fails to mix the unstable fixed-value gradient. Steady finite-amplitude flows reminiscent of Rayleigh--Benard convection then arise even as the net background stratification is stable, emphasizing the importance of the identified mechanism for double-component fluid systems.
V2 Abstract: A new mechanism of double-component convection is discovered. It emerges in a horizontal layer of Boussinesq fluid as a stable stratification due to flux boundary conditions is added to an unstable gradient specified by fixed boundary values. Driven by this mechanism, steady finite-amplitude flows reminiscent of Rayleigh--Benard convection arise even when the background density stratification is stable.
We report here some intriguing properties of fingering double diffusive convection turbulence, i.e. convection flow driven simultaneously by an unstable salinity gradient and a stable temperature gradient. Multiple equilibria can be established in such flow for the same control parameters, either by setting different initial scalar distribution or different evolution history. Transition between a single finger layer and multi-layer staircase can be abrupt and hysteresis. Unlike a deep finger layer, a model widely used in literature, finger interfaces within staircases show totally different tr…
We consider the bifurcation scenario that is found in Rayleigh-Benard convection of binary fluid mixtures like ethanol-water at positive separation ratios and small Lewis numbers leading to a bifurcation sequence of square, oscillatory crossroll, stationary crossroll, and roll patterns. We propose a system of four coupled amplitudes that is capable to model all important properties.
Double diffusive convection (DDC), which is the buoyancy driven flow with fluid density depending on two scalar components, is ubiquitous in many natural and engineering enviroments. Of great interests are scalers transfer rate and flow structures. Here we systematically investigate DDC flow between two horizontal plates, driven by an unstable salinity gradient and stabilized by a temperature gradient. Counterintuitively, when increasing the stabilizing temperature gradient, the salinity flux first increases, even though the velocity monotonically decreases, before it finally breaks down to th…
An electrodeposition cell is used to sustain a destabilizing concentration difference of copper ions in aqueous solution between the top and bottom boundaries of the cell. The resulting convecting motion is analogous to Rayleigh-Bénard convection at high Prandtl numbers. In addition, a stabilizing temperature gradient is imposed across the cell. Even for thermal buoyancy two orders of magnitude smaller than chemical buoyancy, the presence of the weak stabilizing gradient has a profound effect on the convection pattern. Double diffusive fingers appear in all cases. The size of these fingers and…
Onset of small-amplitude oscillatory and both small- and finite-amplitude steady double-component convection arising due to component different boundary conditions in an infinite slot is studied for various slot orientations to the gravity. The main focus is on two compensating background gradients of the components. The physical mechanisms underlying steady and oscillatory convection are analyzed from the perspective of a universally consistent understanding of the effects of different boundary conditions.
Finger convection is observed experimentally in an electrodeposition cell in which a destabilizing gradient of copper ions is maintained against a stabilizing temperature gradient. This double-diffusive system shows finger convection even if the total density stratification is unstable. Finger convection is replaced by an ordinary convection roll if convection is fast enough to prevent sufficient heat diffusion between neighboring fingers, or if the thermal buoyancy force is less than 1/30 of the compositional buoyancy force. At the transition, the ion transport is larger than without an oppos…
The formulation of the variational problems for the solute transport in a fluid layer in presence of double-diffusive thermal convection is discussed. It is shown that the variational functional obtained by Strauss can be generalized and the general functional leads to accurate upper bounds on the solute transport for the case of small and intermediate values of the Rayleigh number. The general functional however is a non-homogeneous one but for asymptotically large Rayleigh numbers it converges to the Strauss approximation. Thus for small and intermediate values of the Rayleigh numbers one sh…
The dynamics of a small Prandtl number binary mixture in a laterally heated cavity is studied numerically. By combining temporal integration, steady state solving and linear stability analysis of the full PDE equations, we have been able to locate and characterize a codimension-three degenerate Takens-Bogdanov point whose unfolding describes the dynamics of the system for a certain range of Rayleigh numbers and separation ratios near S=-1.
Double diffusive staircases are investigated experimentally in a fluid layer with a stabilizing temperature gradient and a destabilizing gradient of ion concentration. Gradients of temperature and ion concentration are maintained in a steady state within an electrochemical system. Staircases are observed even if the density stratification is unstable. None of the previously proposed mechanisms for staircase formation can be recognized in the experiments. Ion transport through fingers which are part of a staircase is not the same as transport through fingers extending through the entire cell. F…
Near the thermodynamic critical point, the physical properties of binary fluids exhibit large variations in response to small temperature and concentration differences, whose effects on the onset of double-diffusive convection are reported here. The vertical symmetry is broken, irregular penetrative instability occurs, and cat's eye patterns are identified in the fingering regime and oscillatory regime, respectively. A new parameter Θ is defined which indicates how the variations of physical properties influence flow fields. It is seen through numerical simulations that the Boussinesq approxim…
Three dimensional roll-type double-diffusive convection in a horizontally infinite layer of an uncompressible liquid is considered in the neighborhood of Hopf bifurcation points. A system of amplitude equations for the variations of convective rolls amplitude is derived by multiple-scaled method. An attention is paid to an interaction of convection and horizontal vortex. Different cases of the derived equations are discussed.
In this paper, a double multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model is developed for simulating transient solid-liquid phase change problems in porous media at the representative elementary volume scale. The model uses two different multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann equations, one for the flow field and the other for the temperature field with nonlinear latent heat source term. The model is based on the generalized non-Darcy formulation, and the solid-liquid phase change interface is traced through the liquid fraction which is determined by the enthalpy method. The model is valid…
Onset of double-component convection due to different boundary conditions is studied in a diversely oriented infinite slot with broken reflection symmetry between the slot conditions for a component. Among other outcomes, the broken symmetry results in small-amplitude viscous convection remaining of an oscillatory nature for any slot orientation other than a horizontal one. Such a universality also involves various abrupt changes in the marginal-stability curves. In inviscid fluid, such changes emerge with zero instability thresholds. Some of these abrupt changes give rise to new mechanisms fo…
In the present paper double-diffusive convection, taking into account Coriolis effects, in a horizontal layer of Brinkman-anisotropic bi-disperse porous medium is analysed. Via linear instability analysis, we found that convection can set in through stationary or oscillatory motions and the critical Rayleigh numbers for the onset of stationary secondary flow (steady convection) and overstability (oscillatory convection) are determined.
Double-diffusive convection driven by both thermal and compositional buoyancy in a rotating cylindrical annulus with conical caps is considered with the aim to establish whether a small fraction of compositional buoyancy added to the thermal buoyancy (or vice versa) can significantly reduce the critical Rayleigh number and amplify convection in planetary cores. It is shown that the neutral surface describing the onset of convection in the double-buoyancy case is essentially different from that of the well-studied purely thermal case, and does indeed allow the possibility of low-Rayleigh number…
In the above paper the authors treat the boundary layer flow along a stationary, vertical, permeable, flat plate within a vertical free stream. Fluid is sucked or injected through the vertical plate. The fluid species concentration at the plate is constant and different from that of the ambient fluid. It is also assumed that the plate is heated by convection from another fluid with constant temperature with a constant heat transfer coefficient. The temperature and species concentration difference between the plate and the ambient fluid creates buoyancy forces and the flow is characterized as m…
Oscillatory double-diffusive convection in horizontal cavity with Soret and Dufour effects is investigated numerically based on SIMPLE algorithm with QUICK scheme in non-uniform staggered grid system. The results show that double-diffusive convection develops from steady-state convection-dominated, periodic oscillatory, quasi-periodic oscillatory to chaotic flow, and finally return to periodic oscillation as buoyancy ratio increases. Moreover, fundamental frequency and fluctuation amplitude increase with buoyancy ratio. As Rayleigh number increases, transition trendy of oscillatory convection …
The double diffusive convection between two parallel plates is numerically studied for a series of parameters. The flow is driven by the salinity difference and stabilized by the thermal field. Our simulations are directly compared to experiments by Hage and Tilgner (\emph{Phys. Fluids} 22, 076603 (2010)) for several sets of parameters and reasonable agreement is found. This in particular holds for the salinity flux and its dependence on the salinity Rayleigh number. Salt fingers are present in all simulations and extend through the entire height. The thermal Rayleigh number seems to have mino…
This article represents a set of results numerically studied in the framework of laminar double diffusive natural convection. We have investigated the thermophysical comportment of Water-based incompressible nanofluids circulating, due to buoyancy forces, inside a two-dimensional enclosed rectangular cavity for two comparable cases of considering or not a centered isothermal block. Results of this investigation are mainly built on parametric study of the most analytical variables that govern the flow. The buoyancy ratio ranged from -5 to 100, while Rayleigh number ranged from 103 to 106, and L…
Fingering double diffusive convection with real seawater properties is studied by two-dimensional direct numerical simulations for the wall-bounded domain and compared with the results for fully periodic domain. For fixed unstable salinity difference between two horizontal plates, dominant flow structures change from convection rolls to salt fingers as the stable temperature difference increases. Meanwhile the bulk density ratio calculated by the mean scalar gradients exceeds unity. When the bulk thermal Rayleigh number, which is defined by the mean temperature gradient in the bulk and the dom…
Motivated by the ablation of vertical ice faces in salt water, we use three-dimensional direct numerical simulations to investigate the heat and salt fluxes in two-scalar vertical convection. For parameters relevant to ice-ocean interfaces in the convection-dominated regime, we observe that the salinity field drives the convection and that heat is essentially transported as a passive scalar. By varying the diffusivity ratio of heat and salt (i.e., the Lewis number $Le$), we identify how the different molecular diffusivities affect the scalar fluxes through the system. Away from the walls, we f…
In this article, we present a bifurcation and stability analysis on the double-diffusive convection. The main objective is to study 1) the mechanism of the saddle-node bifurcation and hysteresis for the problem, 2) the formation, stability and transitions of the typical convection structures, and 3) the stability of solutions. It is proved in particular that there are two different types of transitions: continuous and jump, which are determined explicitly using some physical relevant nondimensional parameters. It is also proved that the jump transition always leads to the existence of a saddle…
A water-filled differentially heated rotating annulus with initially prepared stable vertical salinity profiles is studied in the laboratory. Based on two-dimensional horizontal particle image velocimetry (PIV) data, and infrared camera visualizations, we describe the appearance and the characteristics of the baroclinic instability in this original configuration. First, we show that when the salinity profile is linear and confined between two non stratified layers at top and bottom, only two separate shallow fluid layers can be destabilized. These unstable layers appear nearby the top and the …
A sequence of two and three-dimensional simulations is conducted for the double diffusive convection (DDC) flows in the diffusive regime subjected to an imposed shear. The flow is confined between two horizontal plates which are maintained at different constant temperature, salinity, and different velocity, thus setting up a shear across the flow. The lower plate is fixed at higher temperature and salinity, while the overall (unperturbed) density gradient is statically stable. For a wide range of control parameters, and for sufficiently strong perturbation of the conductive initial state, we f…
In turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection, a large-scale circulation (LSC) develops in a nearly vertical plane, and is maintained by rising and falling plumes detaching from the unstable thermal boundary layers. Rare but large fluctuations in the LSC amplitude can lead to extinction of the LSC (a cessation event), followed by the re-emergence of another LSC with a different (random) azimuthal orientation. We extend previous models of the LSC dynamics to include momentum and thermal diffusion in the azimuthal plane, and calculate the tails of the probability distributions of both the amplitude an…
The single-arm spiral roll state in the system of Boussinesq fluid confined between non-rotating double concentric spherical boundaries with an opposing temperature gradient previously reported by Zhang et al.(Phys. Rev. E, v66, 055203, 2002) has been numerically investigated in detail. It is presented that the state can exist even in a relatively thicker gap rather than that used in our previous reports as a travelling wave solution with a finite constant angular velocity.
Double-diffusive convection in porous media is a common phenomenon in nature, and has received considerable attention in a wide variety of engineering applications. In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating double-diffusive convection in porous media at the representative elementary volume scale. The MRT-LB model is constructed in the framework of the triple-distribution-function approach: the velocity field, the temperature and concentration fields are solved separately by three different MRT-LB equations. The present model has tw…
The multiple scale expansion method is used to derive amplitude equations for a system with thermohaline convection in the neighborhood of Hopf and Taylor bifurcation points and at the double zero point of the dispersion relation. A complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, a Newell-Whitehead-type equation, and an equation of the $ϕ^4$ type, respectively, were obtained. Analytic expressions for the coefficients of these equations and their various asymptotic forms are presented. In the case of Hopf bifurcation for low and high frequencies, the amplitude equation reduces to a perturbed nonlinear Schröd…

We investigate the effect of weak rotation on the large-scale circulation (LSC) of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, using the theory for cessations in a low-dimensional stochastic model of the flow previously studied. We determine the cessation frequency of the LSC as a function of rotation, and calculate the statistics of the amplitude and azimuthal velocity fluctuations of the LSC as a function of the rotation rate for different Rayleigh numbers. Furthermore, we show that the tails of the reorientation probability distribution function remain unchanged for rotating systems, while the di…
Vertically bounded fingering double diffusive convection (DDC) is numerically investigated, focusing on the influences of different velocity boundary conditions, i.e. the no-slip condition which is inevitable in the lab-scale experimental research, and the free-slip condition which is an approximation for the interfaces in many natural environments, such as the oceans. For both boundary conditions the flow is dominated by fingers and the global responses follow the same scaling laws, with enhanced prefactors for the free-slip cases. Therefore, the laboratory experiments with the no-slip bounda…
The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding and to model the processes controlling the amplitude of the wind of Rayleigh-Benard convection. We analyze results from direct simulation of an L/H = 4 aspect-ratio domain with periodic sidewalls at Ra = 1e5; 1e6; 1e7; 1e8 and at Pr = 1 by decomposing independent realizations into wind and fluctuations. It is shown that deep inside the thermal boundary layer, horizontal heat-fuxes exceed the average vertical heat-fux by a factor 3 due to the interaction between the wind and the mean temperature field. These large horizontal heat-fluxe…
Numerical simulations of dynamos in rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection in plane layers are presented. Two different types of dynamos exist which obey different scaling laws for the amplitude of the magnetic field. The transition between the two occurs within a hydrodynamically uniform regime which can be classified as rapidly rotating convection.
In this paper, we present results from an experimental study into turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection forced externally by periodically modulated unidirectional rotation rates. We find that the azimuthal rotation velocity $\dotθ$(t) and thermal amplitude $δ$(t) of the large-scale circulation (LSC) are modulated by the forcing, exhibiting a variety of dynamics including increasing phase delays and a resonant peak in the amplitude of $\dotθ$(t). We also focus on the influence of modulated rotation rates on the frequency of occurrence $η$ of stochastic cessation/reorientation events, and on the …
In planetary fluid cores, the density depends on temperature and chemical composition, which diffuse at very different rates. This leads to various instabilities, bearing the name of double-diffusive convection. We investigate rotating double-diffusive convection (RDDC) in fluid spheres. We use the Boussinesq approximation with homogeneous internal thermal and compositional source terms. We focus on the finger regime, in which the thermal gradient is stabilising whereas the compositional one is destabilising. First, we perform a global linear stability analysis in spheres. The critical Rayleig…
We conduct two- and three-dimensional simulations for double diffusive convection in the diffusive regime, where the fluid flow is driven by a destabilizing temperature gradient and stabilized by a stably stratified salinity gradient. We study how the heat flux, Reynolds number, and flow structures change with the density ratio $Λ$, which is the ratio of the buoyancy force induced by the salinity gradient to that by the temperature gradient. When $Λ$ increases from zero, the flow first behaves similarly as in pure Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection, both with respect to flow structure and to heat…
We present a numerical study of double-diffusive convection characterized by a stratification unstable to thermal convection while at the same time a mean molecular weight (or solute concentration) difference between top and bottom counteracts this instability. Convective zones can form in this case either by the stratification being locally unstable to the combined action of both temperature and solute gradients or by another process, the oscillatory double-diffusive convective instability, which is triggered by the faster molecular diffusivity of heat in comparison with that one of the solut…
An extreme dissipation event in the bulk of a closed three-dimensional turbulent convection cell is found to be correlated with a strong reduction of the large-scale circulation flow in the system that happens at the same time as a plume emission event from the bottom plate. The reduction in the large-scale circulation opens the possibility for a nearly frontal collision of down- and upwelling plumes and the generation of a high-amplitude thermal dissipation layer in the bulk. This collision is locally connected to a subsequent high-amplitude energy dissipation event in the form of a strong sh…
We study the properties of oscillatory double-diffusive convection (ODDC) in the presence of a uniform vertical background magnetic field. ODDC takes place in stellar regions that are unstable according to the Schwarzschild criterion and stable according to the Ledoux criterion (sometimes called semiconvective regions), which are often predicted to reside just outside the core of intermediate-mass main sequence stars. Previous hydrodynamic studies of ODDC have shown that the basic instability saturates into a state of weak wave-like convection, but that a secondary instability can sometimes tr…
The nonlinear development of finite amplitude disturbances in mixed convection flow in a heated vertical annulus is studied by direct numerical simulation. The unsteady Navier Stokes equations are solved numerically by a spectral method for different initial conditions. The results indicate that the equilibrium state of the flow is not unique, but depends on the amplitude and wavenumber of the initial disturbance. In all cases, the equilibrium state consists of a single dominant mode with the wavenumber kf, and its superharmonics. The range of equilibrium wavenumbers kf was found to be narrowe…
Oscillatory double-diffusive convection (ODDC, more traditionally called semiconvection) is a form of linear double-diffusive instability that occurs in fluids that are unstably stratified in temperature (Schwarzschild unstable), but stably stratified in chemical composition (Ledoux stable). This scenario is thought to be quite common in the interiors of stars and giant planets, and understanding the transport of heat and chemical species by ODDC is of great importance to stellar and planetary evolution models. Fluids unstable to ODDC have a tendency to form convective thermo-compositional lay…
Double-diffusive convection driven by both thermal and compositional buoyancy in a rotating spherical shell can exhibit a rather large number of behaviours often distinct from that of the single diffusive system. In order to understand how the differences in thermal and compositional molecular diffusivities determine the dynamics of thermo-compositional convection we investigate numerically the linear onset of convective instability in a double-diffusive setup. We construct an alternative equivalent formulation of the non-dimensional equations where the linearised double-diffusive problem is d…
This work addresses the effects of different thermal sidewall boundary conditions on the formation of flow states and heat transport in two- and three-dimensional Rayleigh--Bénard convection (RBC) by means of direct numerical simulations and steady-state analysis for Rayleigh numbers $Ra$ up to $4\times10^{10}$ and Prandtl numbers $Pr=0.1,1$ and $10$. We show that a linear temperature profile imposed at the conductive sidewall leads to a premature collapse of the single-roll state, whereas a sidewall maintained at a constant temperature enhances its stability. The collapse is caused by acceler…
By tailoring the geometry of the upper boundary in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection we manipulate the boundary layer -- interior flow interaction, and examine the heat transport using the Lattice Boltzmann method. For fixed amplitude and varying boundary wavelength $λ$, we find that the exponent $β$ in the Nusselt-Rayleigh scaling relation, $Nu-1 \propto Ra^β$, is maximized at $λ\equiv λ_{\text{max}} \approx (2 π)^{-1}$, but decays to the planar value in both the large ($λ\gg λ_{\text{max}}$) and small ($λ\ll λ_{\text{max}}$) wavelength limits. The changes in the exponent originate in the …
Within the fluid iron cores of terrestrial planets, convection and the resulting generation of global magnetic fields are controlled by the overlying rocky mantle. The thermal structure of the lower mantle determines how much heat is allowed to escape the core. Hot lower mantle features, such as the thermal footprint of a giant impact or hot mantle plumes, will locally reduce the heat flux through the core mantle boundary (CMB), thereby weakening core convection and affecting the magnetic field generation process. In this study, we numerically investigate how parametrised hot spots at the CMB …
So far, numerical studies of double-diffusive layering in turbulent convective flows have neglected the effects of rotation. We undertake a first step into that direction by investigating how Coriolis forces affect a double-diffusive layer inside a rotating spherical shell. For this purpose we have run simulations in a parameter regime where these layers are expected to form and successively increased the rate of rotation with the result that fast rotation is found to have a similar stabilising effect on the overall convective flux as an increase of the stability ratio $R_ρ$ has in a non-rotat…
Double-diffusive convection in a horizontally infinite layer of a unit height in a large Rayleigh numbers limit is considered. From linear stability analysis it is shown, that the convection tends to have a form of travelling tall thin rolls with height 10-30 times larger than width. Amplitude equations of ABC type for vertical variations of amplitude of these rolls and mean values of diffusive components are derived. As a result of its numerical simulation it is shown, that for a wide variety of parameters considered ABC system have solutions, known as diffusive chaos, which can be useful for…
Many natural and engineering systems are simultaneously subjected to a driving force and a stabilizing force. The interplay between the two forces, especially for highly nonlinear systems such as fluid flow, often results in surprising features. Here we reveal such features in three different types of Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection, i.e. buoyancy-driven flow with the fluid density being affected by a scalar field. In the three cases different {\it stabilizing forces} are considered, namely (i) horizontal confinement, (ii) rotation around a vertical axis, and (iii) a second stabilizing scalar …
We describe an interpretation of convection in binary fluid mixtures as a superposition of thermal and solutal problems, with coupling due to advection and proportional to the separation parameter S. Many properties of binary fluid convection are then consequences of generic properties of 2 x 2 matrices. The eigenvalues of 2 x 2 matrices varying continuously with a parameter r undergo either avoided crossing or complex coalescence, depending on the sign of the coupling (product of off-diagonal terms). We first consider the matrix governing the stability of the conductive state. When the therma…
Convection in the metallic cores of terrestrial planets is likely to be subjected to lateral variations in heat flux through the outer boundary imposed by creeping flow in the overlying silicate mantles. Boundary anomalies can significantly influence global diagnostics of core convection when the Rayleigh number, $Ra$, is weakly supercritical; however, little is known about the strongly supercritical regime appropriate for planets. We perform numerical simulations of rapidly rotating convection in a spherical shell geometry and impose two patterns of boundary heat flow heterogeneity: a hemisph…
Convection is the mechanism by which energy is transported through the outermost 30% of the Sun. Solar turbulent convection is notoriously difficult to model across the entire convection zone where the density spans many orders of magnitude. In this issue of PNAS, Hanasoge et al. (2012) employ recent helioseismic observations to derive stringent empirical constraints on the amplitude of large-scale convective velocities in the solar interior. They report an upper limit that is far smaller than predicted by a popular hydrodynamic numerical simulation.
Direct numerical simulations are conducted for double diffusive convection (DDC) bounded by two parallel plates, with fluid properties similar to the values of seawater. The DDC flow is driven by an unstable salinity difference and stabilized at the same time by a temperature difference. For these conditions the flow can be in the finger regime. We develop scaling laws for three key response parameters of the system: The non-dimensional salinity flux $Nu_S$ mainly depends on the salinity Rayleigh number $Ra_S$, which measures the strength of the salinity difference, and exhibits a very weak de…
