We investigated numerically the relation between a roller and the pressure distribution to clarify the dynamics of the roller in circular hydraulic jumps. We found that a roller which characterizes a type II jump is associated with two high pressure regions after the jump, while a type I jump (without the roller) is associated with only one high pressure region. Our numerical results show that building up an appropriate pressure field is essential for a roller.
We propose a phenomenological model for the polygonal hydraulic jumps discovered by Ellegaard et al., based on the known flow structure for the type II hydraulic jumps with a "roller" (separation eddy) near the free surface in the jump region. The model consists of mass conservation and radial force balance between hydrostatic pressure and viscous stresses on the roller surface. We carry out an analytical study of laminar circular hydraulic jumps, in generalized-Newtonian fluids obeying the two-parametric power-law model of Ostwald-de Waele. Under the boundary-layer approximation we obtained exact expressions determining the flow, an implicit relation for the jump radius is derived. Corresponding results for Newtonian fluids can be retrieved as a limiting case for the flow behavior index n=1, predictions are made for fluids deviating from Newtonian behavior.
We present a simple viscous theory of free-surface flows in boundary layers, which can accommodate regions of separated flow. In particular this yields the structure of stationary hydraulic jumps, both in their circular and linear versions, as well as structures moving with a constant speed. Finally we show how the fundamental hydraulic concepts of subcritical and supercritical flow, originating from inviscid theory, emerge at intermediate length scales in our model.
Results from large-eddy simulations of a classical hydraulic jump at inlet Froude number 2 are reported. This study explores the initiation of thin-film hydraulic jumps. We present the results of some experiments on the circular hydraulic jump in normal and superfluid liquid helium. The radius of the jump and the depth of the liquid outside the jump are measured through optical means. Although the scale of the apparatus is rather small, the location of the jump is found to be consistent with the assumption that the jump can be treated as a shock, if the surface tension is taken into account. The properties of a standard hydraulic jump depend critically on a Froude number Fr defined as the ratio of the flow velocity to the gravity waves speed. Here we furnish a basic theory of this phenomenon founded on the shallow-water model of the circular hydraulic jump. The formation of a planar hydraulic jump has been analysed in the framework of a full depth-averaged thin film model (DAM) with surface tension effects included. We have demonstrated regular weak solutions of the full DAM and analysed surface tension effects. It has been shown that surface tension effects within the parameter range relevant to the recent experiments are expected to be very weak and practically negligible. The developed methodology can be used in the analysis of laminar flow regimes and as a benchmark in developing full scale hydrodynamic models.
We impose a linearized Eulerian perturbation on a steady, shallow, radial outflow of a liquid (water), whose local pressure function includes both the hydrostatic and the Laplace pressure terms. The resulting wave equation bears the form of a hydrodynamic metric. In this paper, we seek an adequate macroscopic model for a hydraulic jump in Bingham fluid. The formulas for conjugate depths, sequent bottom shear stress and critical depth are established. Since no exact analytical solution in closed form is available for conjugate depths, an approximate formula is developed. This formula can provide good results with an error less than 4%. The analytical results have revealed that the critical depth and the ratio of conjugate depths increase until bottom shear stress exceeds a certain value and then decrease afterwards. Hydraulic jumps created by gravity are seen every day in the kitchen sink. We show that at small scales a circular hydraulic jump can be created in the absence of gravity, by surface tension. The theory is motivated by our experimental finding of a height discontinuity in spreading submicron molten metal droplets created by pulsed-laser ablation. By careful control of initial conditions, we show that this leads to solid femtolitre cups of gold, silver, copper, niobium and tin.

We explore the complex dynamics of a non-coalescing drop of moderate size inside a circular hydraulic jump of the same liquid formed on a horizontal disk. In this situation the drop is moving along the jump and one observes two different motions: a periodic one (it orbitates at constant speed) and an irregular one involving reversals of the orbital motion. Modeling the drop as a rigid sphere exchanging friction with liquid across a thin film of air, we recover the orbital motion and the internal rotation of the drop. This internal rotation is experimentally observed.
We investigate the numerical artifact known as a carbuncle, in the solution of the shallow water equations. We propose a new Riemann solver that is based on a local measure of the entropy residual and aims to avoid carbuncles while maintaining high accuracy. We propose a new challenging test problem for shallow water codes, consisting of a steady circular hydraulic jump that can be physically unstable. We show that numerical methods are prone to either suppress the instability completely or form carbuncles. We test existing cures for the carbuncle. In our experiments, only the proposed method …

An exact solution to the lock-exchange problem, which is a two-layer analogue of the classical dam-break problem, is obtained in the shallow-water (SW) approximation for two immiscible fluids with slightly different densities. The dispersion relation depends on the characteristics of the fluid (in our case, water and silicon oil) as well as on the fluid depth and the wavelength regime. In some cases, it can be tuned to obtain a relativistic regime plus high-frequency dispersive effects. We discuss two types of ongoing analogue white-hole experiments: deep water waves propagating against a counter-current in a wave channel and shallow waves on a circular hydraulic jump.
In this paper we re-examine the flow produced by the normal impact of a laminar liquid jet onto an infinite plane when the flow is dominated by surface tension. It is observed experimentally that after impact the liquid spreads radially over the plane away from the point of impact in a thin film. It is also observed that, at a finite radius, there is an abrupt increase in thickness of the film which has been identified as a hydraulic jump,and that this radius is independent of the orientation of the surface showing that gravity is unimportant (Bhagat et al. 2018). We provide an experimental demonstration that the circular hydraulic jump represents a hydrodynamic white hole or gravitational fountain (the time-reverse of a black hole) by measuring the angle of the Mach cone created by an object in the "supersonic" inner flow region.
