We propose a generalized perspective on the behavior of high-order derivative moments in turbulent shear flows by taking account of the roles of small-scale intermittency and mean shear, in addition to the Reynolds number. Two asymptotic regimes are discussed with respect to shear effects. By these means, some existing disagreements on the Reynolds number dependence of derivative moments can be explained. That odd-order moments of transverse velocity derivatives tend not vanish as expected from elementary scaling considerations does not necessarily imply that small-scale anisotropy persists at all Reynolds numbers.
A photon correlation method is introduced for measuring components of the shear rate tensor in a turbulent soap film. This new scheme, which is also applicable to three-dimensional flows, is shown to give the same results as Laser Doppler velocimetry, but with less statistical noise. The technique yields the mean shear rate s, its standard deviation, and a simple mathematical transform of the probability density function P(s) of the shear rate itself.
Studies of the relation between the shear parameter S^* and the Reynolds number Re are presented for a nearly homogeneous and statistically stationary turbulent shear flow. The parametric investigations are in line with a generalized perspective on the return to local isotropy in shear flows that was outlined recently [Schumacher, Sreenivasan and Yeung, Phys. Fluids, vol.15, 84 (2003)]. Therefore, two parameters, the constant shear rate S and the level of initial turbulent fluctuations as prescribed by an energy injection rate epsilon_{in}, are varied systematically. The investigations suggest…
A shear-improved Smagorinsky model is introduced based on recent results concerning shear effects in wall-bounded turbulence by Toschi et al. (2000). The Smagorinsky eddy-viscosity is modified subtracting the magnitude of the mean shear from the magnitude of the instantaneous resolved strain-rate tensor. This subgrid-scale model is tested in large-eddy simulations of plane-channel flows at two different Reynolds numbers. First comparisons with the dynamic Smagorinsky model and direct numerical simulations, including mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stress profiles, are show…
We investigate spatial and temporal cross-correlations between streamwise and normal velocity components in three shear flows: a low-dimensional model for vortex-streak interactions, direct numerical simulations for a nearly homogeneous shear flow and experimental data for a turbulent boundary layer. A driving of streamwise streaks by streamwise vortices gives rise to a temporal asymmetry in the short time correlation. Close to the wall or the bounding surface in the free-slip situations, this asymmetry is identified. Further away from the boundaries the asymmetry becomes weaker and changes ch…
We present numerical studies of stretching of Hookean dumbbells in a turbulent Navier-Stokes flow with a linear mean profile, <u_x>=Sy. In addition to the turbulence features beyond the viscous Kolmogorov scale η, the dynamics at the equilibrium extension of the dumbbells significantly below eta is well resolved. The variation of the constant shear rate S causes a change of the turbulent velocity fluctuations on all scales and thus of the intensity of local stretching rate of the advecting flow. The latter is measured by the maximum Lyapunov exponent lambda_1 which is found to increase as λ_1 …
Nontrivial steady flows have recently been found that capture the main structures of the turbulent buffer layer. We study the effects of polymer addition on these "exact coherent states" (ECS) in plane Couette flow. Despite the simplicity of the ECS flows, these effects closely mirror those observed experimentally: Structures shift to larger length scales, wall-normal fluctuations are suppressed while streamwise ones are enhanced, and drag is reduced. The mechanism underlying these effects is elucidated. These results suggest that the ECS are closely related to buffer layer turbulence.
An experimental analysis of small-scales anisotropic turbulent fluctuations has been performed in two different flows. We analyzed anisotropic properties of an homogeneous shear flows and of a turbulent boundary layer by means of two cross-wire probes to obtain multi-point multi-component measurements. Data are analyzed at changing inter-probe separation without the use of Taylor hypothesis. The results are consistent with the ``exponent-only'' scenario for universality, i.e. all experimental data can be fit by fixing the same set of anisotropic scaling exponents at changing only prefactors, f…
Cross correlations between normal and downstream velocity fluctuations in a turbulent shear flow are shown to carry information about the non-normal amplification process. The creation of spanwise modulated streaks by downstream vortices implies an asymmetry in temporal correlation functions. We verify this in numerical simulations in shear flows with $Re_λ\approx 100$.
The interaction of polymers with turbulent shear flows is examined. We focus on the structure of the elastic stress tensor, which is proportional to the polymer conformation tensor. We examine this object in turbulent flows of increasing complexity. First is isotropic turbulence, then anisotropic (but homogenous) shear turbulence and finally wall bounded turbulence. The main result of this paper is that for all these flows the polymer stress tensor attains a universal structure in the limit of large Deborah number $\De\gg 1$. We present analytic results for the suppression of the coil-stretch …
The evolution of turbulent spots in a parallel shear flow is studied by means of full three-dimensional numerical simulations. The flow is bounded by free surfaces and driven by a volume force. Three regions in the spanwise spot cross-section can be identified: a turbulent interior, an interface layer with prominent streamwise streaks and vortices and a laminar exterior region with a large scale flow induced by the presence of the spot. The lift-up of streamwise streaks which is caused by non-normal amplification is clearly detected in the region adjacent to the spot interface. The spot can be…
A statistically stationary and nearly homogeneous turbulent shear flow is established by an additional volume forcing in combination with stress-free boundary conditions in the shear direction. Both turbulent energy and enstrophy are stationary to a much better approximation than in previous simulations that use remeshing. The temporal fluctuations decrease with increasing Reynolds number. Energy spectra and shear-stress cospectra show that local isotropy is satisfactorily obeyed at the level of second-order moments. However, derivative moments of high-order up to n=7 yield increasing moments …
A shear flow of liquid metal (Galinstan) is driven in an annular channel by counter-rotating traveling magnetic fields imposed at the endcaps. When the traveling velocities are large, the flow is turbulent and its azimuthal component displays random reversals. Power spectra of the velocity field exhibit a $1/f^α$ power law on several decades and are related to power-law probability distributions $P(τ)\simτ^{-β}$ of the waiting times between successive reversals. This $1/f$ type spectrum is observed only when the Reynolds number is large enough. In addition, the exponents $α$ and $β$ are contro…
We present numerical studies for finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbells which are dispersed in a turbulent plane shear flow at moderate Reynolds number. The polymer ensemble is described on the mesoscopic level by a set of stochastic ordinary differential equations with Brownian noise. The dynamics of the Newtonian solvent is determined by the Navier-Stokes equations. Momentum transfer of the dumbbells with the solvent is implemented by an additional volume forcing term in the Navier-Stokes equations, such that both components of the resulting viscoelastic fluid are connected b…
We present a theoretical analysis of large aspect-ratio turbulent vertical convection that yields two relationships between heat flux and wall shear stress, measured respectively by the Nusselt number ($\text{Nu}$) and shear Reynolds number ($\text{Re}_τ$), in terms of the Rayleigh ($\text{Ra}$) and Prandtl numbers ($\text{Pr}$): $\text{Re}_τ^2 \text{Nu} = f(\text{Pr}) \text{Pr}^{-1} \text{Ra}$ in the high-$\text{Ra}$ limit and $\text{Nu} \approx C \text{Pr}^{\varepsilon} \text{Re}_τ$ with $\varepsilon=1/3$ for $\text{Pr} \gg1$ and $\varepsilon=1$ for $\text{Pr} \ll 1$, where $f(\text{Pr})$ is…
I suggest a solution to a persistent mystery in the physics of turbulent shear flows: cumulus clouds rise to towering heights, practically without entraining the ambient medium, while apparently similar turbulent jets in general lose their identity within a small distance through entrainment and mixing. From dynamical systems computations on a model chaotic vortical flow, I show that entrainment and mixing due to coherent structures depend sensitively on the relative speeds of different portions of the flow. A small change in these speeds, effected for example by heating, drastically alters th…
We present a reduced model for the transition to turbulence in shear flow that is simple enough to admit a thorough numerical investigation while allowing spatio-temporal dynamics that are substantially more complex than those allowed in previous modal truncations. Our model allows a comparison of the dynamics resulting from initial perturbations that are localised in the spanwise direction with those resulting from sinusoidal perturbations. For spanwise-localised initial conditions the subcritical transition to a `turbulent' state (i) takes place more abruptly, with a boundary between laminar…
Buoyancy effects in unstably stratified mixing layers express themselves through gravity currents of heavy fluid which propagate in an ambient lighter fluid. These currents are encountered in numerous geophysical flows, industrial safety and environmental protection issues. During transition to turbulence a strong distortion of the separating interface between regions containing `heavy' or `light' fluid arises. The complexity of this interface will be used to monitor the progress of the mixing. We concentrate on the enhancement of surface-area and `surface-wrinkling' of the separating interfac…
We present an analytical model for the time-developing turbulent boundary layer (TD-TBL) over a flat plate. The model provides explicit formulae for the temporal behavior of the wall-shear stress and both the temporal and spatial distributions of the mean streamwise velocity, the turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress. The resulting profiles are in good agreement with the DNS results of spatially-developing turbulent boundary layers at momentum thickness Reynolds number equal to 1430 and 2900. Our analytical model is, to the best of our knowledge, the first of its kind for TD-TBL.
Floods, tides and tsunamis are turbulent, yet conventional models are based upon depth averaging inviscid irrotational flow equations. We propose to change the base of such modelling to the Smagorinksi large eddy closure for turbulence in order to appropriately match the underlying fluid dynamics. Our approach allows for large changes in fluid depth to cater for extreme inundations. The key to the analysis underlying the approach is to choose surface and bed boundary conditions that accommodate a constant turbulent shear as a nearly neutral mode. Analysis supported by slow manifold theory then…
