The classification problem for principal fibre bundles over two-dimensional CW-complexes is considered. Using the Postnikov factorization for the base space of a universal bundle a Puppe sequence that gives an implicit solution for the classification problem is constructed. In cases, when the structure group $G$ is path-connected or $π_{1}(G) = 0$, the classification can be given in terms of cohomology groups.
The most basic characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles are the generalised Miller-Morita-Mumford classes, obtained by fibre integrating characteristic classes of the vertical tangent bundle. In this note we show that they may be defined for more general families of manifolds than smooth fibre bundles: smooth block bundles and topological fibre bundles.
Contextuality is the failure of "local" probabilistic models to become global ones. In this paper we introduce the notions of \emph{measurable fibre bundles}, \emph{probability fibre bundles}, and \emph{sample fibre bundle} which capture and make precise the former statement. The central notions of contextuality are discussed under this formalism, examples worked out, and some new aspects pointed out.
Characteristic classes of fibre bundles $E^{d+n}\to B^n$ in the category of closed oriented manifolds give rise to characteristic numbers by integrating the classes over the base. Church, Farb and Thibault [CFT] raised the question of which generalised Miller-Morita-Mumford classes have the property that the associated characteristic number is independent of the fibering and depends only on the cobordism class of the total space $E$. Here we determine a complete answer to this question in both the oriented category and the stably almost complex category. An MMM class has this property if and o…
We express the signature modulo 4 of a closed, oriented, $4k$-dimensional $PL$ manifold as a linear combination of its Euler characteristic and the new absolute torsion invariant defined in Korzeniewski [11]. Let $F \to E \to B$ be a $PL$ fibre bundle, where $F$, $E$ and $B$ are closed, connected, and compatibly oriented $PL$ manifolds. We give a formula for the absolute torsion of the total space $E$ in terms of the absolute torsion of the base and fibre, and then combine these two results to prove that the signature of $E$ is congruent modulo 4 to the product of the signatures of $F$ and $B$…
This is a survey paper, starting from the general notion of coordinate bundle taken from Steenrod. Its aim is to provide a motivation for the introduction of cyclic homology (and the closely related noncommutative de Rham cohomology) by Connes, Tsygan and the author. The bridge is made through a generalization of Chern-Weil theory, explained in a very concrete manner through the transition functions of the bundles involved. The final result is a "Chern character" introduced by Connes and the author in the framework of K-theory and functional analysis.
We give a topological explanation of the main results of V.Shchigolev, Categories of Bott-Samelson Varieties, Algebras and Representation Theory, 23 (2), 349-391, 2020. To this end, we consider some subspaces of Bott-Samelson varieties invariant under the action of the maximal compact torus $K$ and study their topological and homological properties. Moreover, we describe multiplicative generators of the equivariant cohomologies of Bott-Samelson varieties.
It was proved by Chern, Hirzebruch and Serre that the signature of a fibre bundle is multiplicative if the fundamental group of the base acts trivially on the cohomology ring of the fibre with real coefficients, in which case the signature of the total space equals the product of the signatures of base and fibre. Hambleton, Korzeniewski and Ranicki proved that in any case the signature is multiplicative modulo 4. In this paper we present two results concerning the multiplicativity modulo 8: firstly we identify the obstruction to multiplicativity modulo 8 with the Arf-Kervaire invariant of a Po…
Let $f:E\longrightarrow O$ be a Hurewicz fibration with a fiber space $F_{r_{o}}$ and a lifting function $L_{f}$. The \emph{$Lf-$function} $Θ_{L_{f}}$ of $f$ is defined by the restriction map of $L_{f}$ on the space $Ω(O,r_{o})\times F_{r_{o}}\times \{1\}$. The purpose of this paper is to give some results which show the role of $Lf-$functions in finding a fiber homotopically equivalent relation between two fibrations, over a common polyhedron base. Furthermore we will prove the equivalently between our results and Dold's theorem in fiber bundles, over a common suspension base of polyhedron sp…
Given a locally trivial fibre bundle $E \to B$ (with fibres and base finite complexes), an orthogonal real line bundle $λ$ over $E$ and a real vector bundle $ξ$ over $B$, we consider a fibrewise map $f : S(λ) \to ξ$ over $B$ defined on the unit sphere bundle of $λ$. Following the fundamental work of Jaworowski and Dold on the parametrized Borsuk-Ulam theorem, we investigate lower bounds on the cohomological dimension of the set of points $v$ in $S(λ)$ such that $f(v) = f(-v)$.
When two smooth manifold bundles over the same base are fiberwise tangentially homeomorphic, the difference is measured by a homology class in the total space of the bundle. We call this the relative smooth structure class. Rationally and stably, this is a complete invariant. We give a more or less complete and self-contained exposition of this theory which is a reformulation of some of the results of [7]. An important application is the computation of the Igusa-Klein higher Reidemeister torsion invariants of these exotic smooth structures. Namely, the higher torsion invariant is equal to the …
Let $ξ=(X,p,B,G)$ be a principal $G$-bundle, $F$ be a $G$ space and $η=(E,p,B,F)$ be the associated bundle with the fiber $F$. Generally $ξ$ and the action $H_*(G)\otimes H_*(F)\to H_*(F)$ of the Pontriagin ring $H_*(G)$ on $H_*(F)$ do not define homologies of $E$. In this paper we define a two sequences of operations $\{f^i:H_*(G)^{\otimes i}\to H_*(G), i=3,4,...\}$, which we call Hochschild twisting cochain (with respect to Gerstenhaber product), and which in fact form on $H_*(G)$ an $A(\infty$-algebra structure), and $\{\bar{f}^i:H_*(G)^{\otimes (i-1)}\otimes H*(F)\to H_*(F), i=3,4,...\}$ (…
In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of the Serre spectral sequence with respect to the algebraic structures of string topology in generalized homology theories, specificially with the Chas-Sullivan product and the corresponding coproduct and module structures. We prove compatibility for two kinds of fibre bundles: the fibre bundle $Ω^n M \to L^n M \to M$ for an $h_*$-oriented manifold $M$ and the looped fibre bundle $L^n F \to L^n E \to L^n B$ of a fibre bunde $F \to E \to B$ of $h_*$-oriented manifolds. Our method lies in the construction of Gysin morphisms of spectral sequences. We a…
We describe the singular cohomology ring, the K-ring of complex vector bundles, the Chow ring, and the Grothendieck ring of coherent sheaves of the total space of the fibre bundle with base space an irreducible nonsingular complete Noetherian scheme and fibre a nonsingular projective T-toric variety associated to a prinicipal T-bundle over the field of complex numbers.
Let $\rm{Aut}(p)$ denote the space of all self-fibre homotopy equivalences of a principal $G$-bundle $p: E\rightarrow X$ of simply connected CW complexes with $E$ finite. When $G$ is a compact connected topological group, we show that there exists an inequality $$n-{\rm N}(p)\leq {\rm Hnil}_{\mathbb{Q}}({\rm{Aut}}(p)_0)\leq n$$ for any space $X$, where $n$ is the number of non-trivial rational homotopy groups of $G$ and ${\rm N}(p)$ is defined in Section 2. In particular, ${\rm Hnil}_{\mathbb{Q}}({\rm{Aut}}(p)_{0})=n$ if $p$ is a fibre-homotopy trivial bundle and X is finite.
This thesis is concerned with the residues modulo 4 and 8 of the signature of a 4k-dimensional oriented geometric Poincare complex. The Z_8-valued Brown-Kervaire invariant of Z_4-valued quadratic forms is used to prove that if the signature is divisible by 4, the divisibility by 8 is detected by the Arf invariant of a Z_2-valued quadratic form. This result is applied to a fibration of geometric Poincare complexes with the total space 4k-dimensional. It is known that the signature is multiplicative modulo 4, and that there are examples of non-multiplicativity modulo 8. We identify the obstructi…
I. Hambleton, A. Korzeniewski and A. Ranicki proved that the signature of a fibre bundle of closed, connected, compatibly oriented PL manifolds is always multiplicative modulo 4. In this paper, we consider the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genera for odd integers $y$ for a smooth fiber bundle such that the base, fibre, and total space are compact complex algebraic manifolds (in the complex analytic topology, not in the Zariski topology). We show that the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genera of such a fibre bundle are always multiplicative modulo 4. We also investigate multiplicativity modulo 8 and show that if $y$ is c…
