Selecting N random points in a unit square corresponds to selecting a random permutation. By putting 5 types of symmetry restrictions on the points, we obtain subsets of permutations : involutions, signed permutations and signed involutions. We are interested in the statistics of the length of the longest up/right path of random points selections in each symmetry type as the number of points increases to infinity. The limiting distribution functions are expressed in terms of Painlevé II equation. Some of them are Tracy-Widom distributions in random matrix theory, while there are two new classes of distribution functions interpolating GOE and GSE, and GUE and GOE^2 Tracy-Widom distribution functions. Also some applications and related topics are discussed.
This paper describes a combinatorial way of obtaining all the eigenvalues of the symmetrized shuffling operators introduced by Victor Reiner, Franco Saliola and Volkmar Welker. It allows us to prove their conjecture that these eigenvalues are integers. This work generalizes the case of the random-to-random Markov chain.
Connections between longest increasing subsequences in random permutations and eigenvalues of random matrices with complex entries have been intensely studied. This note applies properties of random elements of the finite general linear group to obtain results about the longest increasing subsequence in non- uniform random permutations.
Random permutations with distribution conditionally uniform given the set of record values can be generated in a unified way, coherently for all values of $n$. Our central example is a two-parameter family of random permutations that are conditionally uniform given the counts of upper and lower records. This family interpolates between two versions of Ewens' distribution. We discuss characterisations of the conditionally uniform permutations, their asymptotic properties, constructions and relations to random partitions.
The classes of tree permutations and forest permutations were defined by Acan and Hitczenko (2016). We study random permutations of a given length from these classes, and in particular the number of occurrences of a fixed pattern in one of these random permutations. The main results show that the distributions of these numbers are asymptotically normal. The proof uses representations of random tree and forest permutations that enable us to express the number of occurrences of a pattern by a type of $U$-statistics; we then use general limit theorems for the latter.
We compute the limit distribution for (centered and scaled) length of the longest increasing subsequence of random colored permutations. The limit distribution function is a power of that for usual random permutations computed recently by Baik, Deift, and Johansson (math.CO/9810105). In two--colored case our method provides a different proof of a similar result by Tracy and Widom about longest increasing subsequences of signed permutations (math.CO/9811154). Our main idea is to reduce the `colored' problem to the case of usual random permutations using certain combinatorial results and element…
We initiate the study of limit shapes for random permutations avoiding a given pattern. Specifically, for patterns of length 3, we obtain delicate results on the asymptotics of distributions of positions of numbers in the permutations. We view the permutations as 0-1 matrices to describe the resulting asymptotics geometrically. We then apply our results to obtain a number of results on distributions of permutation statistics.
We consider random permutations which are spherically symmetric with respect to a metric on the symmetric group $S_n$ and are consistent as $n$ varies. The extreme infinitely spherically symmetric permutation-valued processes are identified for the Hamming, Kendall-tau and Caley metrics. The proofs in all three cases are based on a unified approach through stochastic monotonicity.
We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of permutations of length $n$ that avoid some given set of patterns of length 3. We show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after suitable scaling. In several cases, the number is asymptotically normal; this contrasts to the cases of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length 3 studied in earlier papers.
Let $π_n$ be a uniformly chosen random permutation on $[n]$. Using an analysis of the probability that two overlapping consecutive $k$-permutations are order isomorphic, we show that the expected number of distinct consecutive patterns in $π_n$ is $\frac{n^2}{2}(1-o(1))$. This exhibits the fact that random permutations pack consecutive patterns near-perfectly.
We consider random permutations derived by sampling from stick-breaking partitions of the unit interval. The cycle structure of such a permutation can be associated with the path of a decreasing Markov chain on $n$ integers. Under certain assumptions on the stick-breaking factor we prove a central limit theorem for the logarithm of the order of the permutation, thus extending the classical Erdős-Turán law for the uniform permutations and its generalization for Ewens' permutations associated with sampling from the PD/GEM$(θ)$ distribution. Our approach is based on using perturbed random walks t…
We investigate the typical cycle lengths, the total number of cycles, and the number of finite cycles in random permutations whose probability involves cycle weights. Typical cycle lengths and total number of cycles depend strongly on the parameters, while the distributions of finite cycles are usually independent Poisson random variables.
We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of 321-avoiding permutations of length $n$ and show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after scaling by $n^{m+\ell}$ where $m$ is the length of $σ$ and $\ell$ is the number of blocks in it. The limit is not normal, and can be expressed as a functional of a Brownian excursion.
We consider a random permutation drawn from the set of 132-avoiding permutations of length $n$ and show that the number of occurrences of another pattern $σ$ has a limit distribution, after scaling by $n^{λ(σ)/2}$ where $λ(σ)$ is the length of $σ$ plus the number of descents. The limit is not normal, and can be expressed as a functional of a Brownian excursion. Moments can be found by recursion.
For a given permutation $π_n$ in $S_n$, a random permutation graph is formed by including an edge between two vertices $i$ and $j$ if and only if $(i - j) (π_n(i) - π_n (j)) < 0$. In this paper, we study various statistics of random permutation graphs. In particular, the degree of a given node, the number of nodes with a given degree, the number of isolated vertices, and the number of cliques are analyzed. Further, explicit formulas for the probabilities of having a given number of connected components and isolated vertices are obtained.
In this paper we study the degree sequence of the permutation graph $G_{π_n}$ associated with a sequence $π_n\in S_n$ of random permutations. Joint limiting distributions of the degrees are established using results from graph and permutation limit theories. In particular, for the uniform random permutation, the joint distribution of the degrees of the vertices labelled $\lceil nr_1 \rceil, \lceil nr_2 \rceil, \ldots, \lceil nr_s \rceil$ converges (after scaling by $n$) to independent random variables $D_1, D_2, \ldots, D_s$, where $D_i\sim \text{Unif}(r_i, 1-r_i)$, for $r_i\in [0,1]$ and $i\i…
We present some Markovian approaches to prove universality results for some functions on the symmetric group. Some of those statistics are already studied in [Kammoun, 2018, 2020] but not the general case. We prove, in particular, that the number of occurrences of a vincular patterns satisfies a CLT for conjugation invariant random permutations with few cycles and we improve the results already known for the longest increasing subsequence. The second approach is a suggestion of a generalization to other random permutations and other sets having a similar structure than the symmetric group.
This paper is interested in independent sets (or equivalently, cliques) in uniform random cographs. We also study their permutation analogs, namely, increasing subsequences in uniform random separable permutations. First, we prove that, with high probability as $n$ gets large, the largest independent set in a uniform random cograph with $n$ vertices has size $o(n)$. This answers a question of Kang, McDiarmid, Reed and Scott. Using the connection between graphs and permutations via inversion graphs, we also give a similar result for the longest increasing subsequence in separable permutations. …
It is known from the work of Baik, Deift, and Johansson [1999] that we have Tracy-Widom fluctuations for the longest increasing subsequence of uniform permutations. In this paper, we prove that this result holds also in the case of the Ewens distribution and more generally for a class of random permutation with distribution invariant under conjugation. Moreover, we obtain the convergence of the first components of the associated Young tableaux to the Airy Ensemble as well as the global convergence to the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp shape. Using similar techniques, we also prove that the limiting…
We present general links between statistics of non-Hermitian random matrices and the distribution of the number of cycles of some specific random permutations. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the generating functions of the number of cycles in the commutator $[σ,τ] = στσ^{-1} τ^{-1}$ where $σ$ is uniformly distributed, and $τ$ is either one cycle, the product of two cycles of same size, or the product of many transpositions.
We describe the limit (for two topologies) of large uniform random square permutations, i.e., permutations where every point is a record. The starting point for all our results is a sampling procedure for asymptotically uniform square permutations. Building on that, we first describe the global behavior by showing that these permutations have a permuton limit which can be described by a random rectangle. We also explore fluctuations about this random rectangle, which we can describe through coupled Brownian motions. Second, we consider the limiting behavior of the neighborhood of a point in th…
We study random uniform permutations in an important class of pattern-avoiding permutations: the separable permutations. We describe the asymptotics of the number of occurrences of any fixed given pattern in such a random permutation in terms of the Brownian excursion. In the recent terminology of permutons, our work can be interpreted as the convergence of uniform random separable permutations towards a "Brownian separable permuton".
We study the shape of the Young diagram λassociated via the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to a random permutation in S_n such that the length of the longest decreasing subsequence is not bigger than a fixed number d; in other words we study the restriction of the Plancherel measure to Young diagrams with at most d rows. We prove that in the limit n\to\infty the rows of λbehave like the eigenvalues of a certain random matrix (traceless Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) with d rows and columns. In particular, the length of the longest increasing subsequence of such a random permutation behaves asy…
We explore the probability that a permutation sampled from the symmetric group of order n uniformly at random has cycles of lengths not exceeding r. Asymptotic formulas valid in specified regions for the ratio n/r are obtained using the saddle point method combined with ideas originated in analytic number theory. Theorem 1 and its detailed proof are included to rectify formulas for small r which have been announced by a few other authors.
We consider uniform random permutations drawn from a family enumerated through generating trees. We develop a new general technique to establish a central limit theorem for the number of consecutive occurrences of a fixed pattern in such permutations. We propose a technique to sample uniform permutations in such families as conditioned random colored walks. Building on that, we derive the behavior of the consecutive patterns in random permutations studying properties of the consecutive increments in the corresponding random walks. The method applies to families of permutations with a one-dimen…
The number of peaks of a random permutation is known to be asymptotically normal. We give a new proof of this and prove a central limit theorem for the distribution of peaks in a fixed conjugacy class of the symmetric group. Our technique is to apply ``analytic combinatorics'' to study a complicated but exact generating function for peaks in a given conjugacy class.
Let $P_n^1,\dots, P_n^d$ be $n\times n$ permutation matrices drawn independently and uniformly at random, and set $S_n^d:=\sum_{\ell=1}^d P_n^\ell$. We show that if $\log^{12}n/(\log \log n)^{4} \le d=O(n)$, then the empirical spectral distribution of $S_n^d/\sqrt{d}$ converges weakly to the circular law in probability as $n \to \infty$.
We establish a novel bijective encoding that represents permutations as forests of decorated (or enriched) trees. This allows us to prove local convergence of uniform random permutations from substitution-closed classes satisfying a criticality constraint. It also enables us to reprove and strengthen permuton limits for these classes in a new way, that uses a semi-local version of Aldous' skeleton decomposition for size-constrained Galton--Watson trees.
An involution is a permutation that is its own inverse. Given a permutation $σ$ of $[n],$ let $\mathbf{N}_{n}(σ)$ denote the number of ways to write $σ$ as a product of two involutions of $[n].$ If we endow the symmetric groups $S_{n}$ with uniform probability measures, then the random variables ${\mathbf N}_{n}$ are asymptotically lognormal. The proof is based upon the observation that, for most permutations $σ$, $\mathbf{N}_{n}(σ)$ can be well approximated by $\mathbf{B}_{n}(σ),$ the product of the cycle lengths of $σ$. Asymptotic lognormality of $\mathbf{N}_{n}$ can therefore be deduced fro…
The exponential functional of simple, symmetric random walks with negative drift is an infinite polynomial $Y = 1 + ξ_1 + ξ_1 ξ_2 + ξ_1 ξ_2 ξ_3 + ...$ of independent and identically distributed non-negative random variables. It has moments that are rational functions of the variables $μ_k = \ev(ξ^k) < 1$ with universal coefficients. It turns out that such a coefficient is equal to the number of permutations with descent set defined by the multiindex of the coefficient. A recursion enumerates all numbers of permutations with given descent sets in the form of a Pascal-type triangle.
The purpose of this article is to present a general method to find limiting laws for some renormalized statistics on random permutations. The model considered here is Ewens sampling model, which generalizes uniform random permutations. We describe the asymptotic behavior of a large family of statistics, including the number of occurrences of any given dashed pattern. Our approach is based on the method of moments and relies on the following intuition: two events involving the images of different integers are almost independent.
Problem 1.5.7 from Pitman's Saint-Flour lecture notes: Does there exist for each n a fragmentation process (Π_{n,k}, 1 \leq k \leq n) taking values in the space of partitions of {1,2,...,n} such that Π_{n,k} is distributed like the partition generated by cycles of a uniform random permutation of {1,2,...,n} conditioned to have k cycles? We show that the answer is yes. We also give a partial extension to general exchangeable Gibbs partitions.
We show that the geometric lifting of the RSK correspondence introduced by A.N. Kirillov (2001) is volume preserving with respect to a natural product measure on its domain, and that the integrand in Givental's integral formula for GL(n,R)-Whittaker functions arises naturally in this context. Apart from providing further evidence that Whittaker functions are the natural analogue of Schur polynomials in this setting, our results also provide a new `combinatorial' framework for the study of random polymers. When the input matrix consists of random inverse gamma distributed weights, the probabili…
We study the distribution of cycle lengths in models of nonuniform random permutations with cycle weights. We identify several regimes. Depending on the weights, the length of typical cycles grows like the total number $n$ of elements, or a fraction of $n$ or a logarithmic power of $n$.
Recently Richard Stanley initiated a study of the distribution of the length as(w) of the longest alternating subsequence in a random permutation w from the symmetric group $S_n$. Among other things he found an explicit formula for the generating function (on n and k) for the probability that as(w) is at most k and conjectured that the distribution, suitably centered and normalized, tended to a Gaussian with variance 8/45. In this note we present a proof of the conjecture based on the generating function.
This paper considers a problem that relates to the theories of covering arrays, permutation patterns, Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) classes, and probability thresholds. Specifically, we want to find the number of subsets of [n]:={1,2,....,n} we need to randomly select, in a certain probability space, so as to respectively "shatter" all t-subsets of [n]. Moving from subsets to words, we ask for the number of n-letter words on a q-letter alphabet that are needed to shatter all t-subwords of the q^n words of length n. Finally, we explore the number of random permutations of [n] needed to shatter (spec…
We look at geometric limits of large random non-uniform permutations. We mainly consider two theories for limits of permutations: permuton limits, introduced by Hoppen, Kohayakawa, Moreira, Rath, and Sampaio to define a notion of scaling limits for permutations; and Benjamini-Schramm limits, introduced by the author to define a notion of local limits for permutations. The models of random permutations that we consider are mainly constrained models, that is, uniform permutations belonging to a given subset of the set of all permutations. We often identify this subset using pattern-avoidance, fo…
A locally uniform random permutation is generated by sampling $n$ points independently from some absolutely continuous distribution $ρ$ on the plane and interpreting them as a permutation by the rule that $i$ maps to $j$ if the $i$th point from the left is the $j$th point from below. As $n$ tends to infinity, decreasing subsequences in the permutation will appear as curves in the plane, and by interpreting these as level curves, a union of decreasing subsequences give rise to a surface. We show that, under the correct scaling, for any $r\ge0$, the largest union of $\lfloor r\sqrt{n}\rfloor$ de…
We introduce a probability distribution Q on the group of permutations of the set Z of integers. Distribution Q is a natural extension of the Mallows distribution on the finite symmetric group. A one-sided infinite counterpart of Q, supported by the group of permutations of the set N of natural numbers, was studied previously in our paper [Gnedin and Olshanski, Ann. Prob. 38 (2010), 2103-2135; arXiv:0907.3275]. We analyze various features of Q such as its symmetries, the support, and the marginal distributions.
We investigate the number of permutations that occur in random labellings of trees. This is a generalisation of the number of subpermutations occurring in a random permutation. It also generalises some recent results on the number of inversions in randomly labelled trees. We consider complete binary trees as well as random split trees a large class of random trees of logarithmic height introduced by Devroye in 1998. Split trees consist of nodes (bags) which can contain balls and are generated by a random trickle down process of balls through the nodes. For complete binary trees we show that as…
In a uniform random permutation Πof [n] := {1,2,...,n}, the set of elements k in [n-1] such that Π(k+1) = Π(k) + 1 has the same distribution as the set of fixed points of Πthat lie in [n-1]. We give three different proofs of this fact using, respectively, an enumeration relying on the inclusion-exclusion principle, the introduction of two different Markov chains to generate uniform random permutations, and the construction of a combinatorial bijection. We also obtain the distribution of the analogous set for circular permutations that consists of those k in [n] such that Π(k+1 mod n) = Π(k) + …
An oracle chooses a function $f$ from the set of $n$ bits strings to itself, which is either a randomly chosen permutation or a randomly chosen function. When queried by an $n$-bit string $w$, the oracle computes $f(w)$, truncates the $m$ last bits, and returns only the first $n-m$ bits of $f(w)$. How many queries does a querying adversary need to submit in order to distinguish the truncated permutation from a random function? In 1998, Hall et al. showed an algorithm for determining (with high probability) whether or not $f$ is a permutation, using $O(2^{\frac{m+n}{2}})$ queries. They also sho…
Pop-Stack Sorting is an algorithm that takes a permutation as an input and sorts its elements. It consists of several steps. At one step, the algorithm reads the permutation it has to process from left to right and reverses each of its maximal decreasing subsequences of consecutive elements. It terminates at the first step that outputs the identity permutation. In this note, we answer a question of Defant on the running time of Pop-Stack Sorting on the uniform random permutation $σ_n$. More precisely, we show that there is a constant $c > 0.5$ such that asymptotically almost surely, the algori…
We survey recent results on some one- and two-dimensional patterns generated by random permutations of natural numbers. In the first part, we discuss properties of random walks, evolving on a one-dimensional regular lattice in discrete time $n$, whose moves to the right or to the left are induced by the rise-and-descent sequence associated with a given random permutation. We determine exactly the probability of finding the trajectory of such a permutation-generated random walk at site $X$ at time $n$, obtain the probability measure of different excursions and define the asymptotic distribution…
The random permutation is the Fraïssé limit of the class of finite structures with two linear orders. Answering a problem stated by Peter Cameron in 2002, we use a recent Ramsey-theoretic technique to show that there exist precisely 39 closed supergroups of the automorphism group of the random permutation, and thereby expose all symmetries of this structure. Equivalently, we classify all structures which have a first-order definition in the random permutation.
English title: Eigenvalues of Symmetrized Shuffling Operators The random-to-random shuffling operator explains, for example, the evolution of a deck of cards subject to the following random process: draw a card randomly from the deck and reinsert it at a random position. If one instead draws more than one card at a time before reinserting, then the resulting operator is an example of a family of symmetrized shuffling operators studied by Victor Reiner, Franco Saliola and Volkmar Welker. This thesis describes a way to obtain the eigenvalues of these operators. We build on the work of Anton Diek…
Guibert and Linusson introduced the family of doubly alternating Baxter permutations, i.e. Baxter permutations $σ\in S_n$, such that $σ$ and $σ^{-1}$ are alternating. They proved that the number of such permutations in $S_{2n}$ and $S_{2n+1}$ is the Catalan number $C_n$. In this paper we explore the expected limit shape of such permutations, following the approach by Miner and Pak.
It is a classical fact that for any $\varepsilon > 0$, a random permutation of length $n = (1 + \varepsilon) k^2 / 4$ typically contains a monotone subsequence of length $k$. As a far-reaching generalization, Alon conjectured that a random permutation of this same length $n$ is typically $k$-universal, meaning that it simultaneously contains every pattern of length $k$. He also made the simple observation that for $n = O(k^2 \log k)$, a random length-$n$ permutation is typically $k$-universal. We make the first significant progress towards Alon's conjecture by showing that $n = 2000 k^2 \log \…
Some randomized algorithms, used to obtain a random $n^2 \times n^2$ Sudoku matrix, where $n$ is a natural number, is reviewed in this study. Below is described the set $Π_n$ of all $(2n) \times n$ matrices, consisting of elements of the set $\mathbb{Z}_n =\{ 1,2,\ldots ,n\}$, such that every row is a permutation. It is proved that such matrices would be particularly useful in developing efficient algorithms in generating Sudoku matrices. An algorithm to obtain random $Π_n$ matrices is presented in this paper. The algorithms are evaluated according to two criteria - probability evaluation, and…
