We study irreducible Smale spaces with totally disconnected stable sets and their associated $K$-theoretic invariants. Such Smale spaces arise as Wieler solenoids, and we restrict to those arising from open surjections. The paper follows three converging tracks: one dynamical, one operator algebraic and one $K$-theoretic. Using Wieler's Theorem, we characterize the unstable set of a finite set of periodic points as a locally trivial fibre bundle with discrete fibres over a compact space. We show that one-dimensional random walks in a quasi-periodic environment with Liouville frequency generically have an erratic statistical behavior. In the recurrent case we show that neither quenched nor annealed limit theorems hold and both drift and variance exhibit wild oscillations, being logarithmic at some times and almost linear at other times. In the transient case we show that the annealed Central Limit Theorem fails generically. These results are in stark contrast with the Diophantine case where the Central Limit Theorem with linear drift and variance was established by Sinai.

In this paper we investigate periodic FPU chains with an even number of particles. We show that near the equilibrium point, any such chain admits a \emph{resonant} Birkhoff normal form of order four which is \emph{completely integrable} - an important fact which helps explain the numerical experiments of Fermi, Pasta, and Ulam. We exhibit sufficient conditions for a finite collection of periodic orbits of a Reeb flow on a closed $3$-manifold to bound a positive global surface of section with genus zero. These conditions turn out to be $C^\infty$-generically necessary. Moreover, they involve linking assumptions on periodic orbits with Conley-Zehnder index ranging in a finite set determined by the ambient contact geometry. As an application, we reprove and generalize a classical result of Birkhoff on the existence of annulus-like global surfaces of section for geodesic flows on positively curved two-spheres.
