We review the regular tilings of d-sphere, Euclidean d-space, hyperbolic d-space and Coxeter's regular hyperbolic honeycombs (with infinite or star-shaped cells or vertex figures) with respect of possible embedding, isometric up to a scale, of their skeletons into a m-cube or m-dimensional cubic lattice. In section 2 the last remaining 2-dimensional case is decided: for any odd m>6, star-honeycombs {m, m/2} are embeddable while {m/2, m} are not (unique case of non-embedding for dimension 2). As a spherical analogue of those honeycombs, we enumerate, in section 3, 36 Riemann surfaces representing all nine regular polyhedra on the sphere. In section 4, non-embeddability of all remaining star-honeycombs (on 3-sphere and hyperbolic 4-space) is proved. In the last section 5, all cases of embedding for dimension d>2 are identified. Besides hyper-simplices and hyper-octahedra, they are exactly those with bipartite skeleton: hyper-cubes, cubic lattices and 8, 2, 1 tilings of hyperbolic 3-, 4-, 5-space (only two, {435} and {4335}, of those 11 are compact).
The honeycomb problem on the sphere asks for the perimeter-minimizing partition of the sphere into N equal areas. This article solves the problem when N=12. The unique minimizer is a tiling of 12 regular pentagons in the dodecahedral arrangement.
A tiling is a decomposition of a polygon into finitely many non-overlapping triangles. We prove that if a regular n-gon, $n \geq 5$, $n \neq 28$, can be tiled with similar right triangles, then one of the angles of these triangles is in $\left\{\fracπ{n},\frac{2π}{n}, \fracπ {6}+\frac{2π}{3n}\right\}$. Some related results were previously obtained by M.Laczkovich and B. Szegedy.
We obtain tilings with a singular point by applying conformal maps on regular tilings of the Euclidean plane, and determine its symmetries. The resulting tilings are then symmetrically colored by applying the same conformal maps on colorings of regular tilings arising from sublattice colorings of the centers of its tiles. In addition, we determine conditions so that the coloring of a tiling with singularity that is obtained in this manner is perfect.
The article 'A "regular" pentagonal tiling of the plane' by P. L. Bowers and K. Stephenson defines a conformal pentagonal tiling. This is a tiling of the plane with remarkable combinatorial and geometric properties. However, it doesn't have finite local complexity in any usual sense, and therefore we cannot study it with the usual tiling theory. The appeal of the tiling is that all the tiles are conformally regular pentagons. But conformal maps are not allowable under finite local complexity. On the other hand, the tiling can be described completely by its combinatorial data, which rather auto…
The goal of this paper to determine the optimal horoball packing arrangements and their densities for all four fully asymptotic Coxeter tilings (Coxeter honeycombs) in hyperbolic 3-space $\mathbb{H}^3$. Centers of horoballs are required to lie at vertices of the regular polyhedral cells constituting the tiling. We allow horoballs of different types at the various vertices. Our results are derived through a generalization of the projective methodology for hyperbolic spaces. The main result states that the known Böröczky--Florian density upper bound for "congruent horoball" packings of $\mathbb{…
We say that a triangle $T$ tiles a polygon $A$, if $A$ can be dissected into finitely many nonoverlapping triangles similar to $T$. We show that if $N>42$, then there are at most three nonsimilar triangles $T$ such that the angles of $T$ are rational multiples of $π$ and $T$ tiles the regular $N$-gon. A tiling into similar triangles is called regular, if the pieces have two angles, $\al$ and $\be$, such that at each vertex of the tiling the number of angles $\al$ is the same as that of $\be$. Otherwise the tiling is irregular. It is known that for every regular polygon $A$ there are infinitely…
In this paper we study congruent and non-congruent hyperball (hypersphere) packings of the truncated regular tetrahedron tilings. These are derived from the Coxeter simplex tilings $\{p,3,3\}$ $(7\le p \in \mathbb{N})$ and $\{5,3,3,3,3\}$ in $3$ and $5$-dimensional hyperbolic space. We determine the densest hyperball packing arrangements related to the above tilings. We find packing densities using congruent hyperballs and determine the smallest density upper bound of non-congruent hyperball packings generated by the above tilings.
After having investigated the densest packings by congruent hyperballs to the regular prism tilings in the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ ($n \in \mathbb{N}, n \ge 3)$ we consider the dual covering problems and determine the least dense hyperball arrangements and their densities.
A concept of generalized regular polytope is introduced in this work. The number of its (1...n-1)-dimensional elements is not necessarily integer, though all the combinatorial and metric properties meet those of regular polytopes in a classic sense. New relationships between Schlafli symbol of the regular polytope and its metric parameters have been established. Using the generalized regular polytopes concept, group and metric properties of arbitrary metric space tessellations into regular honeycombs were investigated. It has been shown that sequential tessellations of space into regular honey…
$\SLR$ geometry is one of the eight 3-dimensional Thurston geometries, it can be derived from the 3-dimensional Lie group of all $2\times 2$ real matrices with determinant one. Our aim is to describe and visualize the {\it regular infinite (torus-like) or bounded} $p$-gonal prism tilings in $\SLR$ space. For this purpose we introduce the notion of the infinite and bounded prisms, prove that there exist infinite many regular infinite $p$-gonal face-to-face prism tilings $\cT^i_p(q)$ and infinitely many regular (bounded) $p$-gonal non-face-to-face $\SLR$ prism tilings $\cT_p(q)$ for parameters $…
The topic of totally separable sphere packings is surveyed with a focus on regular constructions, uniform tilings, and contact number problems. An enumeration of all regular totally separable sphere packings in $\mathbb{R}^2$, $\mathbb{R}^3$, and $\mathbb{R}^4$ which are based on convex uniform tessellations, honeycombs, and tetracombs, respectively, is presented, as well as a construction of a family of regular totally separable sphere packings in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that is not based on a convex uniform $d$-honeycomb for $d \geq 3$.
In 1908 Voronoi conjectured that every convex polytope which tiles space face-to-face by translations is affinely equivalent to the Dirichlet-Voronoi polytope of some lattice. In 1999 Erdahl proved this conjecture for the special case of zonotopes. A zonotope is a projection of a regular cube under some affine transformation. In 1975 McMullen showed several equivalent conditions for a zonotope to be a space tiling zonotope, i.e. a zonotope which admits a face-to-face tiling of space by translations. Implicitly, he related space tiling zonotopes to a special class of oriented matroids (regular …
In \cite{Sz13-1} we defined and described the {\it regular infinite or bounded} $p$-gonal prism tilings in $\SLR$ space. We proved that there exist infinitely many regular infinite $p$-gonal face-to-face prism tilings $\cT^i_p(q)$ and infinitely many regular bounded $p$-gonal non-face-to-face prism tilings $\cT_p(q)$ for integer parameters $p,q;~3 \le p$, $ \frac{2p}{p-2} < q$. Moreover, in \cite{MSz14} and \cite{MSzV13} we have determined the symmetry group of $\cT_p(q)$ via its index 2 rotational subgroup, denoted by $\mathbf{pq2_1}$ and investigated the corresponding geodesic and translatio…
In this paper we study the regular prism tilings and construct ball packings by geodesic balls related to the above tilings in the projective model of $\mathbf{Nil}$ geometry. Packings are generated by action of the discrete prism groups $\mathbf{pq2_{1}}$. We prove that these groups are realized by prism tilings in $\mathbf{Nil}$ space if $(p,q)=(3,6), (4,4), (6,3)$ and determine packing density formulae for geodesic ball packings generated by the above prism groups. Moreover, studying these formulae we determine the conjectured maximal dense packing arrangements and their densities and visua…
In this paper we study congruent and non-congruent hyperball (hypersphere) packings of the truncated regular octahedron and cube tilings. These are derived from the Coxeter simplex tilings $\{p,3,4\}$ $(7\le p \in \mathbb{N})$ and $\{p,4,3\}$ $(5\le p \in \mathbb{N})$ in $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$. We determine the densest hyperball packing arrangement and its density with congruent and non-congruent hyperballs related to the above tilings in $\mathbb{H}^3$. We prove that the locally densest congruent or non-congruent hyperball configuration belongs to the regular truncate…
After having investigated the regular prisms and prism tilings in the $\SLR$ space in the previous work \cite{Sz13-1} of the second author, we consider the problem of geodesic ball packings related to those tilings and their symmetry groups $\mathbf{pq2_1}$. $\SLR$ is one of the eight Thurston geometries that can be derived from the 3-dimensional Lie group of all $2\times 2$ real matrices with determinant one. In this paper we consider geodesic spheres and balls in $\SLR$ (even in $\mathbf{SL_{\mathrm{2}}R})$, if their radii $ρ\in [0, \fracπ{2})$, and determine their volumes. Moreover, we cons…
The hexagon is the least-perimeter tile in the Euclidean plane for any given area. On hyperbolic surfaces, this "isoperimetric" problem differs for every given area, as solutions do not scale. Cox conjectured that a regular $k$-gonal tile with 120-degree angles is isoperimetric. For area $π/3$, the regular heptagon has 120-degree angles and therefore tiles many hyperbolic surfaces. For other areas, we show the existence of many tiles but provide no conjectured optima. On closed hyperbolic surfaces, we verify via a reduction argument using cutting and pasting transformations and convex hulls th…
It is shown that the growth rate $(\lim_r |B(r)|^{1/r})$ of any $k$ faces Dirichlet tiling of the real hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^d, d>2,$ is at most $k-1-ε$, for an $ε> 0$, depending only on $k$ and $d$. We don't know if there is a universal $ε_u > 0$, such that $k-1-ε_u$ upperbounds the growth rate for any $k$-regular tiling, when $ d > 2$?
In earlier works \cite{Sz06-1}, \cite{Sz06-2}, \cite{Sz13-3} and \cite{Sz13-4} we have investigated the densest packings and the least dense coverings by congruent hyperballs (hyperspheres) to the regular prism tilings in $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space $\HYN$ ($ 3 \le n \in \mathbb{N})$. In this paper we study a large class of hyperball (hypersphere) packings in $3$-dimensional hyperbolic space that can be derived from truncated simplex tilings (e.g. \cite{S14}, \cite{MPSz}). It is clear, that in order to get a density upper bound for the above hyperball packings, it is sufficient to determi…
