Torsion objects of von Neumann categories describe the phenomen "spectrum near zero" discovered by S. Novikov and M. Shubin. In this paper we classify Hermitian forms on torsion objects of a finite von Neumann category. We prove that any such form can be represented as a discriminant form of a degenerate Hermitian form on a projective module. We also find a relation between the Hermitian forms on projective modules which holds if and only if their discriminant forms are congruent. A notion of superfinite von Neumann category is introduced. It is proven that the classification of torsion Hermitian forms in a superfinite category can be completely reduced to the isomorphisn types of their positive and negative parts.

Novikov - Shubin signatures, II

This paper continues math.DG/9903140. Here we construct a linking form on the torsion part of middle dimensional extended L^2 homology and cohomology of odd-dimensional manifolds. We give a geometric necessary condition when this linking form is hyperbolic. We compute this linking form in case when the manifold bounds. We introduce and study new numerical invariants of the linking form: the Novikov - Shubin signature and the torsion signature. Homological algebra of Novikov-Shubin invariants and Morse inequalities

It is shown that the topological phenomenon "zero in the continuous spectrum", discovered by S.P.Novikov and M.A.Shubin, can be explained in terms of a homology theory on the category of finite polyhedra with values in certain abelian category. This approach implies homotopy invariance of the Novikov-Shubin invariants. Novikov-Shubin invariants and asymptotic dimensions for open manifolds

The Novikov-Shubin numbers are defined for open manifolds with bounded geometry, the Gamma-trace of Atiyah being replaced by a semicontinuous semifinite trace on the C*-algebra of almost local operators. Asimptotic dimension and Novikov-Shubin invariants for open manifolds

A trace on the C^*-algebra A of quasi-local operators on an open manifold is described, based on the results in \cite{RoeOpen}. It allows a description `a la Novikov-Shubin \cite{NS2} of the low frequency behavior of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. An asymptotic dimension for metric spaces, and the 0-th Novikov-Shubin invariant

A nonnegative number d_infinity, called asymptotic dimension, is associated with any metric space. Such number detects the asymptotic properties of the space (being zero on bounded metric spaces), fulfills the properties of a dimension, and is invariant under rough isometries. Regularity of analytic torsion form on families of normal coverings

We prove the smoothness of the L^2-analytic torsion form on some fiber bundles with non-compact fibers of positive Novikov-Shubin invariant. We do so by generalizing the arguments of Azzali-Goette-Schick to an appropriate Sobolev space, and proving that the Novikov-Shubin invariant remains positive in the Sobolev settings, using an argument of Alvarez Lopez-Kordyukov.

Von Neumann spectra near the spectral gap

In this paper we study some new von Neumann spectral invariants associated to the Laplacian acting on L^2 differential forms on the universal cover of a closed manifold. In this paper we suggest a new general formalism for studying the invariants of polyhedra and manifolds comming from the theory of von Neumann algebras. Signature via Novikov numbers

It is shown that the signature of a manifold with a symplectic circle action having only isolated fixed points, equals the alternating sum of the Novikov numbers corresponding to the cohomology class of the generalized moment map. The same is true for more general fixed point sets.

Non-commutative analytic torsion form on the transformation groupoid convolution algebra

Given a fiber bundle $Z \to M \to B$ and a flat vector bundle $E \to M$ with a compatible action of a discrete group $G$, and regarding $B / G$ as the non-commutative space corresponding to the crossed product algebra, we construct an analytic torsion form as a non-commutative deRham differential form. We show that our construction is well defined under the weaker assumption of positive Novikov-Shubin invariant. We prove that this torsion form appears in a transgression formula, from which a non-commutative Riamannian-Roch-Grothendieck index formula follows.

The Novikov conjecture on Cheeger spaces

We prove the Novikov conjecture on oriented Cheeger spaces whose fundamental group satisfies the strong Novikov conjecture. A Cheeger space is a stratified pseudomanifold admitting, through a choice of ideal boundary conditions, an L2-de Rham cohomology theory satisfying Poincare duality. We prove that this cohomology theory is invariant under stratified homotopy equivalences and that its signature is invariant under Cheeger space cobordism.
