Consider the exterior M of a hyperbolic knot lying in a closed, connected, orientable 3-manifold. Culler and Shalen defined norm on H_1(dM;R) using the SL(2,C) character variety of pi_1(M). The Culler-Shalen norm encodes many topological properties of M; in particular it provides information about Dehn fillings of M. Their construction may be applied to arbitrary curves in the SL_2(C)-character variety of a connected, compact, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold whose boundary is a torus, though in this generality one can only guarantee that it will define a seminorm.
The first half of this paper is devoted to the development of the general theory of Culler-Shalen seminorms defined for curves of PSL_2(C)-characters. By working over PSL_2(C) we obtain a theory that is more generally applicable than its SL_2(C) counterpart, while being only mildly more difficult to set up.
In the second half of this paper we apply the theory of Culler-Shalen seminorms to study the Dehn filling operation. In particular we examine the relationship between fillings which yield manifolds having a positive dimensional PSL_2(C)-character variety with those that yield manifolds having a finite or cyclic fundamental group. In one interesting application of this work we show that manifolds resulting from a nonintegral surgery on a knot in the 3-sphere tend to have a zero-dimensional PSL_2(C)-character variety. As a consequence we obtain an infinite family of closed, orientable, hyperbolic Haken manifolds which have zero-dimensional PSL_2(C)-character varieties.
Culler-Shalen theory uses the algebraic geometry of the SL(2,C)-character variety of a 3-manifold to construct essential surfaces in the manifold. There are module structures associated to the coordinate rings of the irreducible components of character varieties that are intimately related to essential surface construction. When these modules are finitely generated, we derive a formula for their rank that incorporates the irreducible component's field of definition and the Culler-Shalen norm.
We determine the total Culler-Shalen seminorms for the 3-manifolds W_{p/q}:=W(p/q,-) obtained by Dehn filling with slope p/q on one boundary component of the Whitehead link exterior W when p is odd. As part of the proof, we use an explicit parametrization of the eigenvalue variety of W to find a one-variable polynomial whose roots characterize characters of p-reps of π_{1}(W_{p/q}), i.e. representations with values in SL_2(C) which are parabolic on the peripheral subgroup.
We show that the SL(2,C)-character variety of the (-2,3,n) pretzel knot consists of two (respectively three) algebraic curves when 3 does not divide n (respectively 3 divides n) and give an explicit calculation of the Culler-Shalen seminorms of these curves. Using this calculation, we describe the fundamental polygon and Newton polygon for these knots and give a list of Dehn surgeries yielding a manifold with finite or cyclic fundamental group. This constitutes a new proof of property P for these knots.
We describe a method to compute the Culler-Shalen seminorms of a knot, using the (-3,3,4) pretzel knot as an illustrative example. We deduce that the SL2(C)-character variety of this knot consists of three algebraic curves and that it admits no non-trivial cyclic or finite surgeries. We also summarize similar results for other (-3,3,n) pretzel knots including the observation that the Seifert surgeries for these knots are precisely those integral slopes lying between two of the boundary slopes.
We classify Dehn surgeries on (p,q,r) pretzel knots resulting in a manifold M(s) having cyclic fundamental group and analyze those leading to a finite fundamental group. The proof uses the theory of cyclic and finite surgeries developed by Culler, Shalen, Boyer, and Zhang. In particular, Culler-Shalen seminorms play a central role.
Let X be a norm curve in the SL(2,C)-character variety of a knot exterior M. Let t = || b || / || a || be the ratio of the Culler-Shalen norms of two distinct non-zero classes a, b in H_1(\partial M, Z). We demonstrate that either X has exactly two associated strict boundary slopes \pm t, or else there are strict boundary slopes r_1 and r_2 with |r_1| > t and |r_2| < t. As a consequence, we show that there are strict boundary slopes near cyclic, finite, and Seifert slopes. We also prove that the diameter of the set of strict boundary slopes can be bounded below using the Culler-Shalen norm of …
The results of Culler and Shalen for 2,3 or 4-free hyperbolic 3-manifolds are contingent on properties specific to and special about rank two subgroups of a free group. Here we determine what construction and algebraic information is required in order to make a geometric statement about $M$, a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with $k$-free fundamental group, for any value of $k$ greater than four. Main results are both to show what the formulation of the general statement should be, for which Culler and Shalen's result is a special case, and that it is true modulo a group-theoretic con…
The powerful character variety techniques of Culler and Shalen can be used to find essential surfaces in knot manifolds. We show that module structures on the coordinate ring of the character variety can be used to identify detected boundary slopes as well as when closed surfaces are detected. This approach also yields new number theoretic invariants for the character varieties of knot manifolds.
We make an analogy of Culler-Morgan-Shalen theory. Our main goal is to show that there exists a non-empty system of essential 2-suborbifolds respecting a given splitting of the orbifold fundamental group.
This paper gives examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds whose SL(2,C) character varieties have ideal points whose associated roots of unity are not 1 or -1. This answers a question of Cooper, Culler, Gillet, Long, and Shalen as to whether roots of unity other than 1 and -1 occur.
Let M be a cusped 3-manifold, and let T be an ideal triangulation of M. The deformation variety D(T), a subset of which parameterises (incomplete) hyperbolic structures obtained on M using T, is defined and compactified by adding certain projective classes of transversely measured singular codimension-one foliations of M. This leads to a combinatorial and geometric variant of well-known constructions by Culler, Morgan and Shalen concerning the character variety of a 3-manifold.
We show that if $M$ is any closed, orientable hyperbolic $3$-manifold with ${\rm vol}\ M\le3.69$, we have ${\rm dim}\ H_1(M;{\bf F}_2)\le7$. This may be regarded as a qualitative improvement of a result due to Culler and Shalen, because the constant $3.69$ is greater than the ordinal corresponding to $ω^2$ in the well-ordered set of finite volumes of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. We also show that if ${\rm vol}\ M\le 3.77$, we have ${\rm dim}\ H_1(M;{\bf F}_2)\le10$. These results are applications of a new method for obtaining lower bounds for the volume of a closed, orientable hyperbolic $3$-mani…
Extending Culler-Shalen theory, Hara and the second author presented a way to construct certain kinds of branched surfaces in a $3$-manifold from an ideal point of a curve in the $\operatorname{SL}_n$-character variety. There exists an essential surface in some $3$-manifold known to be not detected in the classical $\operatorname{SL}_2$-theory. We prove that every connected essential surface in a $3$-manifold is given by an ideal point of a rational curve in the $\operatorname{SL}_n$-character variety for some $n$.
Closed essential surfaces in a three-manifold can be detected by ideal points of the character variety or by algebraic non-integral representations. We give examples of closed essential surfaces not detected in either of these ways. For ideal points, we use Chesebro's module-theoretic interpretation of Culler-Shalen theory. As a corollary, we construct an infinite family of closed hyperbolic Haken 3-manifolds with no algebraic non-integral representations into PSL(2, C), resolving a question of Shanuel and Zhang.
We classify Dehn surgeries on (p,q,r) pretzel knots that result in a manifold of finite fundamental group. The only hyperbolic pretzel knots that admit non-trivial finite surgeries are (-2,3,7) and (-2,3,9). Agol and Lackenby's 6-theorem reduces the argument to knots with small indices p,q,r. We treat these using the Culler-Shalen norm of the SL(2,C)-character variety. In particular, we introduce new techniques for demonstrating that boundary slopes are detected by the character variety.
We extend Culler and Shalen's construction of detecting essential surfaces in 3-manifolds to 3-orbifolds. We do so in the setting of the $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ character variety, and following Boyer and Zhang in the $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ character variety as well. We show that any slope detected on a canonical component of the $\mathrm{(P)SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ character variety of a one cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold with symmetries must be the slope of a symmetric surface. As an application, we show that for each symmetric double twist knot there are slopes which are strongly detected …
Let $M$ be a $3$-manifold, compact with boundary and $Γ$ its fundamental group. Consider a complex reductive algebraic group G. The character variety $X(Γ,G)$ is the GIT quotient $\mathrm{Hom}(Γ,G)//G$ of the space of morphisms $Γ\to G$ by the natural action by conjugation of $G$. In the case $G=\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb C)$ this space has been thoroughly studied. Following work of Thurston, as presented by Culler-Shalen, we give a lower bound for the dimension of irreducible components of $X(Γ,G)$ in terms of the Euler characteristic $χ(M)$ of $M$, the number $t$ of torus boundary components of $…
We investigate the behavior of the SL(2,C) Casson invariant for 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery along two-bridge knots. Using the results of Hatcher and Thurston, and also results of Ohtsuki, we outline how to compute the Culler--Shalen seminorms, and we illustrate this approach by providing explicit computations for double twist knots. We then apply the surgery formula of Curtis to deduce the SL(2,C) Casson invariant for the 3-manifolds obtained by p/q-Dehn surgery on such knots. These results are applied to prove nontriviality of the SL(2,C) Casson invariant for nearly all 3-manifolds o…
This paper proves a theorem about Dehn surgery using a new theorem about PSL(2, C) character varieties. Confirming a conjecture of Boyer and Zhang, this paper shows that a small hyperbolic knot in a homotopy sphere having a non-trivial cyclic slope r has an incompressible surface with non-integer boundary slope strictly between r-1 and r+1. A corollary is that any small knot which has only integer boundary slopes has Property P. The proof uses connections between the topology of the complement of the knot, M, and the PSL(2, C) character variety of M that were discovered by Culler and Shalen. T…
In 1983 Culler and Shalen established a way to construct essential surfaces in a 3-manifold from ideal points of the $SL_2$-character variety associated to the 3-manifold group. We present in this article an analogous construction of certain kinds of branched surfaces (which we call essential tribranched surfaces) from ideal points of the $SL_n$-character variety for a natural number $n$ greater than or equal to 3. Further we verify that such a branched surface induces a nontrivial presentation of the 3-manifold group in terms of the fundamental group of a certain 2-dimensional complex of grou…
In this paper we define the adjoint Reidemeister torsion as a differential form on the character variety of a compact oriented 3-manifold with toral boundary, and prove it defines a regular volume form. Then we show that the torsion form can vanish only at singular points of the character variety. In fact, if the singular point corresponds to a reducible character, we show that the torsion does not vanish under a generic hypothesis on the Alexander polynomial, else we relate the vanishing order with the type of singularity. Finally we consider the ideal points added after compactification of t…
