This paper makes certain observations regarding some conjectures of Milnor and Ramakrishnan in hyperbolic geometry and algebraic K-theory. As a consequence of our observations, we obtain new results and conjectures regarding the rationality and irrationality of Chern-Simons invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

The volume and Chern-Simons invariant of a representation

We give an efficient simplicial formula for the volume and Chern-Simons invariant of a boundary-parabolic PSL(2,C)-representation of a tame 3-manifold. If the representation is the geometric representation of a hyperbolic 3-manifold, our formula computes the volume and Chern-Simons invariant directly from an ideal triangulation with no use of additional combinatorial topology. In particular, the Chern-Simons invariant is computed just as easily as the volume.

On Chern-Simons Matrix Models

The contribution of reducible connections to the U(N) Chern-Simons invariant of a Seifert manifold $M$ can be expressed in some cases in terms of matrix integrals. We show that the U(N) evaluation of the LMO invariant of any rational homology sphere admits a matrix model representation which agrees with the Chern-Simons matrix integral for Seifert spheres and the trivial connection.

A dilogarithmic formula for the Cheeger-Chern-Simons class

We present a simplification of Neumann's formula for the universal Cheeger-Chern-Simons class of the second Chern polynomial. Our approach is completely algebraic, and the final formula can be applied directly on a homology class in the bar complex.

3d spectral networks and classical Chern-Simons theory

We define the notion of spectral network on manifolds of dimension $\le 3$. For a manifold $X$ equipped with a spectral network, we construct equivalences between Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathrm {SL}}(2,{\mathbb C})$-bundles over $X$ and Chern-Simons invariants of flat ${\mathbb C}^\times$-bundles over ramified double covers $\widetilde X$. We construct the (enhanced Rogers) dilogarithm function from the spin Chern-Simons invariant of C*-connections. This leads to geometric proofs of basic dilogarithm identities and a geometric context for other properties, such as the branching structure.

Localization in Abelian Chern-Simons Theory

Chern-Simons theory on a closed contact three-manifold is studied when the Lie group for gauge transformations is compact, connected and abelian. A rigorous definition of an abelian Chern-Simons partition function is derived using the Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing method.
