Reflexivity of the automorphism and isometry groups of some standard operator algebras

In this paper we give an example of a proper standard C*-algebra (a proper C*-subalgebra of B(H) containing C(H)) whose automorphism and isometry groups are topologically reflexive. Furthermore, we prove that in the case of extensions of C(H) by separable commutative C*-algebras, these groups are algebraically reflexive. Concerning the most well-known extensions of C(H) by the algebra of all continuous complex valued functions on the perimeter of the unit disc, we show that the automorphism and isometry groups are topologically nonreflexive.

Reflexivity of the automorphism and isometry groups of the suspension of $B(H)$

The aim of this paper is to show that the automorphism and isometry groups of the suspension of $B(H)$, $H$ being a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space, are algebraically reflexive. This means that every local automorphism, respectively local surjective isometry of $C_0(\mathbb R)\otimes B(H)$ is an automorphism, respectively a surjective isometry.

On isometry groups and maximal symmetry

We study problems of maximal symmetry in Banach spaces. This is done by providing an analysis of the structure of small subgroups of the general linear group GL(X), where X is a separable reflexive Banach space. In particular, we provide the first known example of a Banach space X without any equivalent maximal norm, or equivalently such that GL(X) contains no maximal bounded subgroup. Moreover, this space X may be chosen to be super-reflexive.

Envelopes in Banach spaces

We define the notion of isometric envelope of a subspace in a Banach space, and relate it to a) the mean ergodic projection on the space of fixed points of a semigroup of contractions, b) results on Korovkin sets from the 70's, and c) extension properties of linear isometric embeddings. Left ideals of Banach algebras and dual Banach algebras

We investigate topologically left Noetherian Banach algebras. We show that if $G$ is a compact group, then $L^{\, 1}(G)$ is topologically left Noetherian if and only if $G$ is metrisable. We prove that, given a Banach space $E$ such that $E'$ has BAP, the algebra of compact operators $\mathcal{K}(E)$ is topologically left Noetherian if and only if $E'$ is separable; it is topologically right Noetherian if and only if $E$ is separable. On isometric reflexions in Banach spaces

We obtain the following characterization of Hilbert spaces. Let $E$ be a Banach space whose unit sphere $S$ has a hyperplane of symmetry. Then $E$ is a Hilbert space iff any of the following two conditions is fulfilled: a) the isometry group ${\rm Iso}\, E$ of $E$ has a dense orbit in S; b) the identity component $G_0$ of the group ${\rm Iso}\, E$ endowed with the strong operator topology acts topologically irreducible on $E$.
