A new technique for obtaining rigorous results concerning the global dynamics of nonlinear systems is described. The technique combines abstract existence results based on the Conley index theory with computer- assisted computations. As an application of these methods it is proven that for an explicit parameter value the Lorenz equations exhibit chaotic dynamics.
We prove, by employing rigorous numerics, that Shimizu-Morioka system has a Lorenz attractor for an open set of parameter values. Using this result, we prove the existence of a discrete version of the Lorenz attractor for a class of three-dimensional polynomial diffeomorphisms.
Lorenz attractors play an important role in the modern theory of dynamical systems. The reason is that they are robust, i.e. preserve their chaotic properties under various kinds of perturbations. This means that such attractors can exist in applied models and be observed in experiments. It is known that discrete Lorenz attractors can appear in local and global bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms. However, to date, only partial cases were investigated. In this paper bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic cycles with quadratic tangencies of invariant manifolds are studied. A f…
In this paper we study the dynamics of the monoscale Lorenz-96 model using both analytical and numerical means. The bifurcations for positive forcing parameter $F$ are investigated. The main analytical result is the existence of Hopf or Hopf-Hopf bifurcations in any dimension $n\geq4$. Exploiting the circulant structure of the Jacobian matrix enables us to reduce the first Lyapunov coefficient to an explicit formula from which it can be determined when the Hopf bifurcation is sub- or supercritical. The first Hopf bifurcation for $F>0$ is always supercritical and the periodic orbit born at this…
The classic Lorenz equations were originally derived from the two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection system considering an idealised case with the lowest order of harmonics. Although the low-order Lorenz equations have traditionally served as a minimal model for chaotic and intermittent atmospheric motions, even the dynamics of the two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection system is not fully represented by the Lorenz equations, and such differences have yet to be clearly identified in a systematic manner. In this paper, the convection problem is revisited through an investigation of vari…
We present a computer-assisted approach to prove the existence of Hopf bubbles and degenerate Hopf bifurcations in ordinary and delay differential equations. We apply the method to rigorously investigate these nonlocal bifurcation structures in the FitzHugh- Nagumo equation, the extended Lorenz-84 model and a time-delay SI model.
This paper studies the chaotic behavior of hydrosphere and its influence on global weather and climate. We give mathematical arguments for the sea surface temperature (SST) to be unpredictable over the global ocean. The impact of SST variability on global climate is clear during global climate patterns, which involve large-scale ocean-atmosphere fluctuations similar to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Sensitivity (unpredictability) is the core ingredient of chaos. Several researches suggested that the ENSO might be chaotic. It was Vallis [1] who revealed unpredictability of ENSO by red…
