Throughout this abstract let U be a fixed p-point ultrafilter and let I be the dual ideal. Grigorieff forcing is P(U)={p:omega to 2|dom(p) is an element of I} ordered by reverse inclusion. It is well known that Grigorieff forcing is proper. The main result of this paper is the following:
THEOREM: Gregorieff forcing does not satisfy Axiom A. To prove this we use the following game, denoted G(U), for two players playing alternatively:
Player I plays a partition of omega, {J_n| n<omega}, such that for all n<omega, J_n is an element of I;
At the nth turn Player II plays a finite subset F_n of J_n. Player II wins iff the union of the F_n is an element of U.
The following two Lemmas prove the Theorem:
LEMMA 1: If P(U) satisfies axiom A, then player II has a winning strategy in the game G(U).
LEMMA 2:The game G(U) is undetermined.
We study the influence of strong forcing axioms on the complexity of the non-stationary ideal on $ω_2$ and its restrictions to certain cofinalities. Our main result shows that the strengthening $MM^{++}$ of Martin's Maximum does not decide whether the restriction of the non-stationary ideal on $ω_2$ to sets of ordinals of countable cofinality is $Δ_1$-definable by formulas with parameters in $H(ω_3)$. The techniques developed in the proof of this result also allow us to prove analogous results for the full non-stationary ideal on $ω_2$ and strong forcing axioms that are compatible with CH. Fin…
We introduce and prove the consistency of a new set theoretic axiom we call the \emph{Invariant Ideal Axiom}. The axiom enables us to provide (consistently) a full topological classification of countable sequential groups, as well as fully characterize the behavior of their finite products. We also construct examples that demonstrate the optimality of the conditions in \IIA, and list a number of open questions.
We define the property of Pi_2-compactness of a statement phi of set theory, meaning roughly that the hard core of the impact of phi on combinatorics of aleph_1 can be isolated in a canonical model for the statement phi. We show that the following statements are Pi_2-compact: ``dominating number = aleph_1,'' ``cofinality of the meager ideal = aleph_1'', ``cofinality of the null ideal = aleph_1'', existence of various types of Souslin trees and variations on uniformity of measure and category = aleph_1. Several important new metamathematical patterns among classical statements of set theory are…
Under MA we prove that for the ideal $\cal I$ of thin sets on $ω$ and for any ordinal $γ\leq ω_1$ there is an ${\cal I}$-ultrafilter (in the sense of Baumgartner), which belongs to the class ${\cal P}_γ$ of P-hierarchy of ultrafilters. Since the class of ${\cal P}_2$ ultrafilters coincides with a class of P-points, out result generalize theorem of Flašková, which states that there are ${\cal I}$-ultrafilters which are not P-points. It is also related to theorem which states that under CH for any tall P-ideal $\cal I$ on $ω$ there is an ${\cal I}$-ultrafilter, however the ideal of thin sets is …
We show that the following two theories are equiconsistent: (T) ZFC, CH and "There is a dense ideal on the first uncountable cardinal such that if j is the generic embedding associated with it then its restriction on ordinals is independent of the generic object is". (S) ZF, ADR and "Theta is a regular cardinal." The main result of this paper is that T implies that the minimal model of S exists. Woodin, in unpublished work, showed that the consistency of S implies the consistency of T. We will also give a proof of this result, which, together with our main theorem, establishes the equiconsiste…
For certain weak versions of the Axiom of Choice (most notably, the Boolean Prime Ideal theorem), we obtain equivalent formulations in terms of partial orders, and filter-like objects within them intersecting certain dense sets or antichains. This allows us to prove some consequences of the Boolean Prime Ideal theorem using arguments in the style of those that use Zorn's Lemma, or Martin's Axiom.
This note answers the following question: Is it consistent that for an arbitrary tall summable ideal I_g there exists an I_g-ultrafilter which is not rapid? We show that assuming Martin's Axiom for σ-centered posets such ultrafilters exist for each tall summable ideal I_g.
Suppose that $T^*$ is an $ω_1$-Aronszajn tree with no stationary antichain. We introduce a forcing axiom PFA($T^*$) for proper forcings which preserve these properties of $T^*$. We prove that PFA($T^*$) implies many of the strong consequences of PFA, such as the failure of very weak club guessing, that all of the cardinal characteristics of the continuum are greater than $ω_1$, and the $P$-ideal dichotomy. On the other hand, PFA($T^*$) implies some of the consequences of diamond principles, such as the existence of Knaster forcings which are not stationarily Knaster.
This dissertation surveys several topics in the general areas of iterated forcing, infinite combinatorics and set theory of the reals. There are two parts. In the first half I consider alternative versions of the Cichoń diagram. First I show that for a wide variety of reduction concepts there is a Cichoń diagram for effective cardinal characteristics relativized to that reduction. As an application I investigate in detail the Cichoń diagram for degrees of constructibility relative to a fixed inner model of ZFC. Then I study generalizations of cardinal characteristics to the space of functions …
We study the notion of $\mathcal J$-MAD families where $\mathcal J$ is a Borel ideal on $ω$. We show that if $\mathcal J$ is an arbitrary $F_σ$ ideal, or is any finite or countably iterated Fubini product of $F_σ$ ideals, then there are no analytic infinite $\mathcal J$-MAD families, and assuming Projective Determinacy there are no infinite projective $\mathcal J$-MAD families; and under the full Axiom of Determinacy + $V=\mathbf{L}(\mathbb{R})$ there are no infinite $\mathcal J$-mad families. These results apply in particular when $\mathcal J$ is the ideal of finite sets $\mathrm{Fin}$, which…
We study the interplay between Banach space theory and theory of analytic P-ideals. Applying the observation that, up to isomorphism, all Banach spaces with unconditional bases can be constructed in a way very similar to the construction of analytic P-ideals from submeasures, we point out numerous symmetries between the two theories. Also, we investigate a special case, the interactions between combinatorics of families of finite sets, topological properties of the "Schreier type" Banach spaces associated to these families, and the complexity of ideals generated by the canonical bases in these…
