We construct the "spectral" decomposition of the sets $\bar{Per\,f}$, $ω(f)=\cupω(x)$ and $Ω(f)$ for a continuous map $f$ of the interval to itself. Several corollaries are obtained; the main ones describe the generic properties of $f$-invariant measures, the structure of the set $Ω(f)\setminus \bar{Per\,f}$ and the generic limit behavior of an orbit for maps without wandering intervals. The "spectral" decomposition for piecewise-monotone maps is deduced from the Decomposition Theorem. Finally we explain how to extend the results of the present paper for a continuous map of a one-dimensional branched manifold into itself.
We provide a natural canonical decomposition of postcritically finite rational maps with non-empty Fatou sets based on the topological structure of their Julia sets. The building blocks of this decomposition are maps where all Fatou components are Jordan disks with disjoint closures (Sierpiński maps), as well as those where any two Fatou components can be connected through a countable chain of Fatou components with common boundary points (crochet or Newton-like maps). We provide several alternative characterizations for our decomposition, as well as an algorithm for its effective computation. …
In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed `Herman map' is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result gives an answer to a problem of McMullen in a sense and enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for …
We study the asymptotic dynamics of piecewise contracting maps defined on a compact interval. For maps that are not necessarily injective, but have a finite number of local extrema and discontinuity points, we prove the existence of a decomposition of the support of the asymptotic dynamics into a finite number of minimal components. Each component is either a periodic orbit or a minimal Cantor set and such that the $ω$-limit set of (almost) every point in the interval is exactly one of these components. Moreover, we show that each component is the $ω$-limit set, or the closure of the orbit, of…
We can approximate a continuous self-map $f$ of a compact metric space by discretizing the space into a grid. Through either the map itself or a time series, $f$ induces a multivalued grid map $\mathcal F$. The dynamical properties of $\mathcal F$ depend on the resolution of the grid, and we study the persistence of these properties as we change the resolution. In particular, we look at the persistence of Morse decompositions, at both the global (Morse graph) and local (individual Morse set) levels, using several notions of persistence -- graph structure, persistent homology, and mixing proper…
In this paper we study measurable dynamics for the widest reasonable class of smooth one dimensional maps. Three principle decompositions are described in this class : decomposition of the global measure-theoretical attractor into primitive ones, ergodic decomposition and Hopf decomposition. For maps with negative Schwarzian derivative this was done in the series of papers [BL1-BL5], but the approach to the general smooth case must be different.
We study expansivity and the shadowing property for finitely generated group actions on metric spaces. We consider the projecting and lifting problems for actions having these properties. We prove that every expansive action with the shadowing property is strongly $GH$-stable (Gromov-Hausdorff stable). Finally, we introduce sequential shadowing property for finitely generated group actions on metric spaces and show that such shadowing is strong enough to imply the spectral decomposition property.
We introduce topological definitions of expansivity, shadowing, and chain recurrence for homeomorphisms. They generalize the usual definitions for metric spaces. We prove various theorems about topologically Anosov homeomorphisms (maps that are expansive and have the shadowing property) on noncompact and non-metrizable spaces that generalize theorems for such homeomorphisms on compact metric spaces. The main result is a generalization of Smale's spectral decomposition theorem to topologically Anosov homeomorphisms on first countable locally compact paracompact Hausdorff spaces.
It is shown that each subset of positive integers that contains 2 is realizable as the set of essential values of the multiplicity function for the Koopman operator of some weakly mixing transformation.
We consider small perturbations of expanding maps induced by skew-product mappings whose base dynamics are not invertible necessarily. Adopting a previously developed perturbative spectral approach, we show stability of the densities of the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for expanding maps under these perturbations, and upper bounds on the rate of exponential decay of fiber correlations associated to the measures as the noise level goes to zero.
If $R$ is a rational map, the Main Result is a uniformization Theorem for the space of decompositions of the iterates of $R$. Secondly, we show that Fatou conjecture holds for decomposable rational maps.
We realize a dynamical decomposition for a post-critically finite rational map which admits a combinatorial decomposition. We split the Riemann sphere into two completely invariant subsets. One is a subset of the Julia set consisting of uncountably many Jordan curve components. Most of them are wandering. The other consists of components that are pullbacks of finitely many renormalizations, together with possibly uncountably many points. The quotient action on the decomposed pieces is encoded by a dendrite dynamical system. We also introduce a surgery procedure to produce post-critically finit…
We introduce Smale-Vietoris diffeomorphisms that include the classical DE-mappings with Smale solenoids. We describe the correspondence between basic sets of axiom A Smale-Vietoris diffeomorphisms and basic sets of nonsingular axiom A endomorphisms. For Smale-Vietoris diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds, we prove the uniqueness of nontrivial solenoidal basic set. We construct a bifurcation between different types of solenoidal basic sets which can be considered as a destruction (or birth) of Smale solenoid.
We prove statistical limit laws for sequences of Birkhoff sums of the type $\sum_{j=0}^{n-1}v_n\circ T_n^j$ where $T_n$ is a family of nonuniformly hyperbolic transformations. The key ingredient is a new martingale-coboundary decomposition for nonuniformly hyperbolic transformations which is useful already in the case when the family $T_n$ is replaced by a fixed transformation $T$, and which is particularly effective in the case when $T_n$ varies with $n$. In addition to uniformly expanding/hyperbolic dynamical systems, our results include cases where the family $T_n$ consists of intermittent …
We revisit conservative/dissipative and positive/null decompositions of stationary max-stable processes. Originally, both decompositions were defined in an abstract way based on the underlying non-singular flow representation. We provide simple criteria which allow to tell whether a given spectral function belongs to the conservative/dissipative or positive/null part of the de Haan spectral representation. Specifically, we prove that a spectral function is null-recurrent iff it converges to $0$ in the Cesàro sense. For processes with locally bounded sample paths we show that a spectral functio…
This is the announcement, and the long summary, of a series of articles on the algorithmic study of Thurston maps. We describe branched coverings of the sphere in terms of group-theoretical objects called bisets, and develop a theory of decompositions of bisets. We introduce a canonical "Levy" decomposition of an arbitrary Thurston map into homeomorphisms, metrically-expanding maps and maps doubly covered by torus endomorphisms. The homeomorphisms decompose themselves into finite-order and pseudo-Anosov maps, and the expanding maps decompose themselves into rational maps. As an outcome, we pro…
Let $T : Λ\to Λ$ be an expanding map on a Cantor set. For each suitably normalized Hölder continuous potential, we construct a spectral triple from which one may recover the associated Gibbs measure as a noncommutative measure.
We explicitly determine the spectrum of transfer operators (acting on spaces of holomorphic functions) associated to analytic expanding circle maps arising from finite Blaschke products. This is achieved by deriving a convenient natural representation of the respective adjoint operators.
For strictly convex billiard maps of smooth boundaries, we get a Birkhoff normal form via a list of constructive generating functions. Based on this, we get an explicit formula for the beta function (locally), and explored the relation between the spectral invariants of the billiard maps and the beta function.
We consider "Thurston maps": branched self-coverings of the sphere with ultimately periodic critical points, and prove that the Thurston equivalence problem between them (continuous deformation of maps along with their critical orbits) is decidable. More precisely, we consider the action of mapping class groups, by pre- and post-composition, on branched coverings, and encode them algebraically as "mapping class bisets". We show how the mapping class biset of maps preserving a multicurve decomposes into mapping class bisets of smaller complexity, called "small mapping class bisets". We phrase t…
