Notes on the roots of Steiner polynomials

We study the location and the size of the roots of Steiner polynomials of convex bodies in the Minkowski relative geometry. Based on a problem of Teissier on the intersection numbers of Cartier divisors of compact algebraic varieties it was conjectured that these roots have certain geometric properties related to the in- and circumradius of the convex body. We show that the roots of 1-tangential bodies fulfill the conjecture, but we also present convex bodies violating each of the conjectured properties.

Bounds on the roots of the Steiner polynomial

We consider the Steiner polynomial of a C^2 convex body K in R^n (n \leq 5). The opposites of the real parts of the roots of the Steiner polynomial are bounded below by the minimum value and above by the maximum value of the principal radii of curvature of the boundary of K.

A characterization of dual quermassintegrals and the roots of dual steiner polynomials

For any $I\subset\mathbb{R}$ finite with $0\in I$, we provide a characterization of those tuples $(ω_i)_{i\in I}$ of positive numbers which are dual quermaßintegrals of two star bodies. It turns out that this problem is related to the moment problem. Based on this relation we also get new inequalities for the dual quermaßintegrals. Moreover, the above characterization will be the key tool in order to investigate structural properties of the set of roots of dual Steiner polynomials of star bodies.

Steiner polynomials via ultra-logconcave sequences

We investigate structural properties of the cone of roots of relative Steiner polynomials of convex bodies. We prove that they are closed, monotonous with respect to the dimension, and that they cover the whole upper half-plane, except the positive real axis, when the dimension tends to infinity. Steiner symmetrization along a certain equidistributed sequence of directions

This note reports the results of an undergraduate research project from the year 2013-14, concerning the convergence of iterated Steiner symmetrizations in the plane. The directions of symmetrization are chosen according to the Van der Corput sequence, a classical example of a sequence that is equidistributed on the unit circle with low discrepancy. It is shown here that the resulting iteration of Steiner symmetrizations converges to the symmetric decreasing rearrangement. The proof exploits the self-similarity of the sequence of angular increments, using the technique of competing symmetries.

Quantitative illumination of convex bodies and vertex degrees of geometric Steiner minimal trees

In this note we prove two results on the quantitative illumination parameter f(d) of the unit ball of a d-dimensional normed space introduced by K. Bezdek (1992). The first is that f(d) = O(2^d d^2 log d). The second involves Steiner minimal trees. Let v(d) be the maximum degree of a vertex, and s(d) of a Steiner point, in a Steiner minimal tree in a d-dimensional normed space, where both maxima are over all norms. F. Notes on the roots of Ehrhart polynomials

We determine lattice polytopes of smallest volume with a given number of interior lattice points. We show that the Ehrhart polynomials of those with one interior lattice point have largest roots with norm of order n^2, where n is the dimension. This improves on the previously best known bound n and complements a recent result of Braun where it is shown that the norm of a root of an Ehrhart polynomial is at most of order n^2. Root Systems and the Atiyah-Sutcliffe Problem

In this short note, we show that the Atiyah-Sutcliffe conjectures for $n = 2m$, related to the unitary groups $U(2m)$, imply the author's analogous conjectures, which are associated with the symplectic groups $Sp(m)$. The proof is based on the simple fact that the root system of $U(2m)$ dominates that of $Sp(m)$.
