We consider continuous $SL(2,R)$-cocycles over a minimal homeomorphism of a compact set $K$ of finite dimension. We show that the generic cocycle either is uniformly hyperbolic or has uniform subexponential growth.
We study some classes of semi-linear differential equations including both well-posed and ill-posed cases that can generate cocycles (or cocycle correspondences with generating cocycles). Under exponential dichotomy condition with other mild assumptions, we investigate the existence, persistence and regularity of different types of invariant manifolds for these differential equations based on our previous works about invariant manifold theory for abstract `generalized dynamical systems': invariant graphs (global version) and normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds (local version); brief summar…
Exponential dichotomy of a strongly continuous cocycle $\bFi$ is proved to be equivalent to existence of a Mañe sequence either for $\bFi$ or for its adjoint. As a consequence we extend some of the classical results to general Banach bundles. The dynamical spectrum of a product of two cocycles, one of which is scalar, is investigated and applied to describe the essential spectrum of the Euler equation in an arbitrary spacial dimension.
We continue our study of the local theory for quasiperiodic cocycles in $\mathbb{T} ^{d} \times G$, where $G=SU(2)$, over a rotation satisfying a Diophantine condition and satisfying a closeness-to-constants condition, by proving a dichotomy between measurable reducibility (and therefore pure point spectrum), and purely continuous spectrum in the space orthogonal to $L^{2}(\mathbb{T} ^{d}) \hookrightarrow L^{2}(\mathbb{T} ^{d} \times G)$. Subsequently, we describe the equivalence classes of cocycles under smooth conjugacy, as a function of the parameters defining their K.A.M. normal form. Fina…
We study a linear cocycle over irrational rotation $σ_ω(x) = x + ω$ of a circle $\mathbb{T}^{1}$. It is supposed the cocycle is generated by a $C^{1}$-map $A_{\varepsilon}: \mathbb{T}^{1} \to SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ which depends on a small parameter $\varepsilon\ll 1$ and has the form of the Poincaré map corresponding to a singularly perturbed Schrödinger equation. Under assumption the eigenvalues of $A_{\varepsilon}(x)$ to be of the form $\exp(\pm λ(x)/\varepsilon)$, where $λ(x)$ is a positive function, we examine the property of the cocycle to possess an exponential dichotomy (ED) with respect t…
We prove that a generic linear cocycle over a minimal base dynamics of finite dimension has the property that the Oseledets splitting with respect to any invariant probability coincides almost everywhere with the finest dominated splitting. Therefore the restriction of the generic cocycle to a subbundle of the finest dominated splitting is uniformly subexponentially quasiconformal. This extends a previous result for SL(2,R)-cocycles due to Avila and the author.
A theorem of Viana says that almost all cocycles over any hyperbolic system have nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents. In this note we extend this result to cocycles on any noncompact classical semisimple Lie group.
We consider Holder continuous fiber bunched GL(d,R)-valued cocycles over an Anosov diffeomorphism. We show that two such cocycles are Holder continuously cohomologous if they have equal periodic data, and prove a result for cocycles with conjugate periodic data. We obtain a corollary for cohomology between any constant cocycle and its small perturbation. The fiber bunching condition means that non-conformality of the cocycle is dominated by the expansion and contraction in the base. We show that this condition can be established based on the periodic data. Some important examples of cocycles c…
We consider Holder continuous cocycles over hyperbolic dynamical systems with values in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space. We show that two fiber bunched cocycles are Holder continuously cohomologous if and only if they have Holder conjugate periodic data. The fiber bunching condition means that non-conformality of the cocycle is dominated by the expansion and contraction in the base system. We show that this condition can be established based on the periodic data of a cocycle. We also establish Holder continuity of a measurable conjugacy between a fiber bunche…
We consider group-valued cocycles over dynamical systems with hyperbolic behavior. The base system is either a hyperbolic diffeomorphism or a mixing subshift of finite type. The cocycle $A$ takes values in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space and is Hölder continuous. We consider the periodic data of $A$, i.e. the set of its return values along the periodic orbits in the base. We show that if the periodic data of $A$ is uniformly quasiconformal or bounded or contained in a compact set, then so is the cocycle. Moreover, in the latter case the cocycle is isometric w…
For Hölder continuous cocycles over an invertible, Lipschitz base, we establish the Hölder continuity of Oseledets subspaces on compact sets of arbitrarily large measure. This extends a result of Araújo, Bufetov, and Filip by considering possibly noninvertible cocycles, which in addition may take values in the space of compact operators on a Hilbert space. As a by-product of our work, we also show that a noninvertible cocycle with nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents exhibits nonuniformly hyperbolic behaviour (in the sense of Pesin) on a set of full measure.
Let $AC_D(M,SL(2,\mathbb R))$ denote the pairs $(f,A)$ so that $f\in \mathcal A\subset \text{Diff}^{1}(M)$ is a $C^{1}$-Anosov transitive diffeomorphisms and $A$ is an $SL(2,\mathbb R)$ cocycle dominated with respect to $f$. We prove that open and densely in $AC_D(M,SL(2,\mathbb R))$ (in appropriate topologies) the pair $(f,A)$ has simple spectrum with respect to the unique maximal entropy measure $μ_f$. On the other hand, there exists a residual subset $\mathcal{R}\subset \text{Aut}_{Leb}(M)\times L^\infty(M,SL(2,\mathbb R))$, with respect to the separate topology, such that any element $(f,A…
We prove that for semi-invertible and Hölder continuous linear cocycles $A$ acting on an arbitrary Banach space and defined over a base space that satisfies the Anosov Closing Property, all exceptional Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to an ergodic invariant measure for base dynamics can be approximated with Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to ergodic measures supported on periodic orbits. Our result is applicable to a wide class of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems.
We prove that the set of fiber-bunched $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-valued Hölder cocycles with nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents over a volume preserving, accessible and center-bunched partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism is open. Moreover, we present an example showing that this is no longer true if we do not assume acessibility in the base dynamics.
We show that if the base frequency is Diophantine, then the Lyapunov exponent of a $C^{k}$ quasi-periodic $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ cocycle is $1/2$-Hölder continuous in the almost reducible regime, if $k$ is large enough. As a consequence, we show that if the frequency is Diophantine, $k$ is large enough, and the potential is $C^k$ small, then the integrated density of states of the corresponding quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator is $1/2$-Hölder continuous.
We consider linear cocycles over non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. The base system is a diffeomorphism $f$ of a compact manifold $X$ preserving a hyperbolic ergodic probability measure $μ$. The cocycle $A$ over $f$ is Holder continuous and takes values in $GL(d,R)$ or, more generally, in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space. For a $GL(d,R)$-valued cocycle $A$ we prove that the Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to $μ$ can be approximated by the Lyapunov exponents of $A$ with respect to measures on hyperbolic periodic orbits of $f$. In the infinite-di…
Criteria for the simplicity of the Lyapunov spectra of linear cocycles have been found by Furstenberg, Guivarc'h-Raugi, Gol'dsheid-Margulis and, more recently, Bonatti-Viana and Avila-Viana. In all the cases, the authors consider cocycles over hyperbolic systems, such as shift maps or Axiom A diffeomorphisms. In this paper we propose to extend such criteria to situations where the base map is just partially hyperbolic. This raises several new issues concerning, among others, the recurrence of the holonomy maps and the (lack of) continuity of the Rokhlin disintegrations of $u$-states. Our main …
We consider the action of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ on a vector bundle $\mathbf{H}$ preserving an ergodic probability measure $ν$ on the base $X$. Under an irreducibility assumption on this action, we prove that if $\hatν$ is any lift of $ν$ to a probability measure on the projectivized bunde $\mathbb{P}(\mathbf{H})$ that is invariant under the upper triangular subgroup, then $\hat ν$ is supported in the projectivization $\mathbb{P}(\mathbf{E}_1)$ of the top Lyapunov subspace of the positive diagonal semigroup. We derive two applications. First, the Lyapunov exponents for the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycl…
We consider the problem of approximating a linear cocycle (or, more generally, a vector bundle automorphism) over a fixed base dynamics by another cocycle admitting a dominated splitting. We prove that the possibility of doing so depends only on the homotopy class of the cocycle, provided that the base dynamics is a minimal diffeomorphism and the fiber dimension is least 3. This result is obtained by means of a general theorem on the existence of almost invariant sections for fiberwise isometries of bundles with compact fibers and finite fundamental group. The main novelty of the proofs is the…
Let $A$ be a Hölder continuous cocycle over a hyperbolic dynamical system with values in the group of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold $M$. We consider the periodic data of $A$, i.e., the set of its return values along the periodic orbits in the base. We show that if the periodic data of $A$ is bounded in Diff$^{\,q}(M)$, $q>1$, then the set of values of the cocycle is bounded in Diff$^{\,r}(M)$ for each $r<q$. Moreover, such a cocycle is isometric with respect to a Hölder continuous family of Riemannian metrics on $M$.
Given a hyperbolic homeomorphism on a compact metric space, consider the space of linear cocycles over this base dynamics which are Hölder continuous and whose projective actions are partially hyperbolic dynamical systems. We prove that locally near any typical cocycle, the Lyapunov exponents are Hölder continuous functions relative to the uniform topology. This result is obtained as a consequence of a uniform large deviations type estimate in the space of cocycles. As a byproduct of our approach, we also establish other statistical properties for the iterates of such cocycles, namely a centra…
We prove a conditional theorem on the positivity of the Lyapunov exponent for a Schrödinger cocycle over a skew shift base with a cosine potential and the golden ratio as frequency. For coupling below 1, which is the threshold for Herman's subharmonicity trick, we formulate three conditions on the Lyapunov exponent in a finite but large volume and on the associated large deviation estimates at that scale. Our main results demonstrate that these finite-size conditions imply the positivity of the infinite volume Lyapunov exponent. This paper shows that it is possible to make the techniques devel…
We consider continuous $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ valued cocycles over general dynamical systems and discuss a variety of uniformity notions. In particular, we provide a description of uniform one-parameter families of continuous $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ cocycles as $G_δ$-sets. These results are then applied to Schrödinger operators with dynamically defined potentials. In the case where the base dynamics is given by a subshift satisfying the Boshernitzan condition, we show that for a generic continuous sampling function, the associated Schrödinger cocycles are uniform for all energies and,…
