We study the geometry of type II supergravity compactifications in terms of an oriented vector bundle $E$, endowed with a bundle metric of split signature and further datum. The geometric structure is associated with a so-called generalised $G$-structure and characterised by an $E$-spinor $ρ$, which we can regard as a differential form of mixed degree. This enables us to reformulate the field equations of type II supergravity as an integrability condition of type $d_Hρ=0$, where $d_H=d+H\wedge$ is the twisted differential on forms. Finally, we investigate some geometric properties of integrable structures and formulate various no-go theorems.
We summarize the main results of our recent investigation of bundles of real Clifford modules and briefly touch on some applications to string theory and supergravity.
The local supertwistor formalism, which involves a superconformal connection acting on the bundle of such objects over superspace, is used to investigate superconformal geometry in six dimensions. The geometry corresponding to (1, 0) and (2, 0) off-shell conformal supergravity multiplets, as well the associated finite super-Weyl transformations, are derived.
We study heterotic supergravity at $\mathcal{O}(α')$, first described in detail in 1989 by Bergshoeff and de Roo. In particular, we discuss an ambiguity of a connection choice on the tangent bundle. It is well known that at $\mathcal{O}(α')$ the Hull connection gives a consistent supergravity theory with supersymmetry transformations given in the usual way. We consider deformations of this connection corresponding to field redefinitions, and the necessary corrections to the supersymmetry transformations. We are interested in the moduli space of such field redefinitions which allow for supersym…
Forty-six years after the birth of supersymmetry in 1973 from works of Julius Wess and Bruno Zumino, the standard quantum-field-theorists and particle physicists' language of `superspaces', `supersymmetry', and `supersymmetric action functionals in superspace formulation' as given in Chapters IV, V, VI, VII, XXII of the classic on supersymmetry and supergravity: Julius Wess & Jonathan Bagger: Supersymmetry and Supergravity (2nd ed.), is finally polished, with only minimal mathematical patches added for consistency and accuracy in dealing with nilpotent objects from the Grassmann algebra involv…
We implement the Dirac-Schwinger-Zwanziger integrality condition on four-dimensional classical ungauged supergravity and use it to obtain its duality-covariant, gauge-theoretic, differential-geometric model on an oriented four-manifold $M$ of arbitrary topology. Classical bosonic supergravity is completely determined by a submersion $π$ over $M$ equipped with a complete Ehresmann connection, a vertical euclidean metric, and a vertically-polarized flat symplectic vector bundle $Ξ$. Building on these structures, we implement the Dirac-Schwinger-Zwanziger integrality condition through the choice …
The aim of this paper is to prove a normal form Theorem for Dirac-Jacobi bundles using the recent techniques from Bursztyn, Lima and Meinrenken. As the most important consequence, we can prove the splitting theorems of Jacobi pairs which was proposed by Dazord, Lichnerowicz and Marle. As an application we provide a alternative proof of the splitting theorem of homogeneous Poisson structures.
The theory of locally anisotropic superspaces (supersymmetric generalizations of various types of Kaluza--Klein, Lagrange and Finsler spaces) is laid down. In this framework we perform the analysis of construction of the supervector bundles provided with nonlinear and distinguished connections and metric structures. Two models of locally anisotropic supergravity are proposed and studied in details.
The present work provides a mathematically rigorous account on super fiber bundle theory, connection forms and their parallel transport, that ties together various approaches. We begin with a detailed introduction to super fiber bundles. We then introduce the concept of so-called relative supermanifolds as well as bundles and connections defined in these categories. Studying these objects turns out to be of utmost importance in order to, among other things, model anticommuting classical fermionic fields in mathematical physics. We then construct the parallel transport map corresponding to such…
We study generalized Kaehler manifolds for which the corresponding complex structures commute and classify completely the compact generalized Kaehler four-manifolds for which the induced complex structures yield opposite orientations.
We obtain the topological obstructions to existence of a bundle of irreducible real Clifford modules over a pseudo-Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of arbitrary dimension and signature and prove that bundles of Clifford modules are associated to so-called real Lipschitz structures. The latter give a generalization of spin structures based on certain groups which we call real Lipschitz groups. In the fiberwise-irreducible case, we classify the latter in all dimensions and signatures. As a simple application, we show that the supersymmetry generator of eleven-dimensional supergravity in "mostly plus"…
We give a gentle introduction to the global geometric formulation of the bosonic sector of four-dimensional supergravity on an oriented four-manifold $M$ of arbitrary topology, providing a geometric characterization of its U-duality group. The geometric formulation of four-dimensional supergravity is based on a choice of a vertically Riemannian submersion $π$ over $M$ equipped with a flat Ehresmann connection, which determines the non-linear section sigma model of the theory, and a choice of flat symplectic vector bundle $\mathcal{S}$ equipped with a positive complex polarization over the tota…
We propose a model in which a spliced vector bundle (with an arbitrary number of gauge structures in the splice) possesses a geometry which do not split. The model employs connection 1-forms with values in a space-product of Lie algebras, and therefore interlaces the various gauge structures in a non-trivial manner. Special attention is given to the structure of the geometric ghost sector and the super-algebra it possesses: The ghosts emerge as $x$-dependent deformations at the gauge sector, and the associated BRST super algebra is realized as constraints that follow from the invariance of the…
We study metrics on the shape space of curves that induce a prescribed splitting of the tangent bundle. More specifically, we consider reparametrization invariant metrics $G$ on the space $\operatorname{Imm}(S^1,\mathbb R^2)$ of parametrized regular curves. For many metrics the tangent space $T_c\operatorname{Imm}(S^1,\mathbb R^2)$ at each curve $c$ splits into vertical and horizontal components (with respect to the projection onto the shape space $B_i(S^1,\mathbb R^2)=\operatorname{Imm}(S^1,\mathbb R^2)/\operatorname{Diff}(S^1)$ of unparametrized curves and with respect to the metric $G$). In…
We show that the pluriclosed flow preserves generalized Kähler structures with the extra condition $[J_+,J_-] = 0$, a condition referred to as "split tangent bundle." Moreover, we show that in this in this case the flow reduces to a nonconvex fully nonlinear parabolic flow of a scalar potential function. We prove a number of a priori estimates for this equation, including a general estimate in dimension $n=2$ of Evans-Krylov type requiring a new argument due to the nonconvexity of the equation. The main result is a long time existence theorem for the flow in dimension $n=2$, covering most case…
In recent years, a close connection between supergravity, string effective actions and generalized geometry has been discovered that typically involves a doubling of geometric structures. We investigate this relation from the point of view of graded geometry, introducing an approach based on deformations of graded Poisson structures and derive the corresponding gravity actions. We consider in particular natural deformations of the $2$-graded symplectic manifold $T^{*}[2]T[1]M$ that are based on a metric $g$, a closed Neveu-Schwarz $3$-form $H$ (locally expressed in terms of a Kalb-Ramond 2-for…
Given a vector bundle $A$ over a smooth manifold $M$ such that the square root $\mathcal{L}$ of the line bundle $\wedge^{\mathrm{top}}A^\ast \otimes \wedge^{\mathrm{top}}T^\ast M$ exists, the Clifford bundle associated to the split pseudo-Euclidean vector bundle $(E = A \oplus A^\ast, \langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle)$, admits a spinor bundle $\wedge^\bullet A \otimes \mathcal{L}$, whose section space can be thought of as that of Berezinian half-densities of the graded manifold $A^\ast[1]$. We give an explicit construction of Dirac generating operators of split Courant algebroid (or proto-bialgebr…
We present a ten-dimensional theory, named β-supergravity, that contains non-geometric fluxes and could uplift some four-dimensional gauged supergravities. Building on earlier work, we study here its NSNS sector, where Q- and R-fluxes are precisely identified. Interestingly, the Q-flux is captured in an analogue of the Levi-Civita spin connection, giving rise to a second curvature scalar. We reproduce the ten-dimensional Lagrangian using the Generalized Geometry formalism; this provides us with enlightening interpretations of the new structures. Then, we derive the equations of motion of our t…
We consider the moduli space of polystable $L$-twisted $G$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a real reductive Lie group, and $L$ is a holomorphic line bundle over $X$. Evaluating the Higgs field at a basis of the ring of polynomial invariants of the isotropy representation, one defines the Hitchin map. This is a map to an affine space, whose dimension is determined by $L$ and the degrees of the polynomials in the basis. Building up on the work of Kostant-Rallis and Hitchin, in this paper, as a first step in the study of the Hitchin map, we construct a section of th…
