We introduce a relative index for a pair of dissipative operators in a von Neumann algebra of finite type and prove an analog of the Birman-Schwinger principle in this setting. As an application of this result, revisiting the Birman-Krein formula in the abstract scattering theory, we represent the de la Harpe-Skandalis determinant of the characteristic function of dissipative operators in the algebra in terms of the relative index.
We prove a generalized Birman-Schwinger principle in the non-self-adjoint context. In particular, we provide a detailed discussion of geometric and algebraic multiplicities of eigenvalues of the basic operator of interest (e.g., a Schrödinger operator) and the associated Birman-Schwinger operator, and additionally offer a careful study of the associated Jordan chains of generalized eigenvectors of both operators. In the course of our analysis we also study algebraic and geometric multiplicities of zeros of strongly analytic operator-valued functions and the associated Jordan chains of generali…
Let $H_0$ and $H$ be self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space. We consider the spectral projections of $H_0$ and $H$ corresponding to a semi-infinite interval of the real line. We discuss the index of this pair of spectral projections and prove an identity which extends the Birman-Schwinger principle onto the essential spectrum. We also relate this index to the spectrum of the scattering matrix for the pair $H_0$, $H$.
In the present article we will give a new proof of the ground state asymptotics of the Dirichlet Laplacian with a Neumann window acting on functions which are defined on a two-dimensional infinite strip or a three-dimensional infinite layer. The proof is based on the analysis of the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator as a first order classical pseudo-differential operator. Using the explicit representation of its symbol we prove an asymptotic expansion as the window length decreases.
We study spectral instability of steady states to the linearized 2D Euler equations on the torus written in vorticity form via certain Birman-Schwinger type operators $K_λ(μ)$ and their associated 2-modified perturbation determinants $\mathcal D(λ,μ)$. Our main result characterizes the existence of an unstable eigenvalue to the linearized vorticity operator $L_{\rm vor}$ in terms of zeros of the 2-modified Fredholm determinant $\mathcal D(λ,0)=\det_{2}(I-K_λ(0))$ associated with the Hilbert Schmidt operator $K_λ(μ)$ for $μ=0$. As a consequence, we are also able to provide an alternative proof …
In a domain $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^\mathbf{N}$ we consider compact, Birman-Schwinger type, operators of the form $\mathbf{T}_{P,\mathfrak{A}}=\mathfrak{A}^*P\mathfrak{A}$; here $P$ is a singular Borel measure in $Ω$ and $\mathfrak{A}$ is a noncritical order $-l\ne -\mathbf{N}/2$ pseudodifferential operator. For a class of such operators, we obtain estimates and a proper version of H.Weyl's asymptotic law for eigenvalues, with order depending on dimensional characteristics of the measure. A version of the CLR estimate for singular measures is proved. For non-selfadjoint operators of the form $P…
We study location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators with complex $\ell^{p}$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq \infty$. In the case of $\ell^{1}$-potentials, the derived bound is shown to be optimal. For $p>1$, two different spectral bounds are obtained. The method relies on the Birman-Schwinger principle and various techniques for estimations of the norm of the Birman-Schwinger operator.
In this note we investigate three-dimensional Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interactions supported on $C^2$-smooth cones, both finite and infinite. Our main results concern a Faber-Krahn-type inequality for the principal eigenvalue of these operators. The proofs rely on the Birman-Schwinger principle and on the fact that circles are unique minimizers for a class of energy functionals. The main novel idea consists in the way of constructing test functions for the Birman-Schwinger principle.
Thanks to the Birman-Schwinger principle, Weyl's laws for Birman-Schwinger operators yields semiclassical Weyl's laws for the corresponding Schrödinger operators. In a recent preprint Rozenblum established quite general Weyl's laws for Birman-Schwinger operators associated with pseudodifferential operators of critical order and potentials that are product of $L\log L$-Orlicz functions and Alfhors-regular measures supported on a submanifold. In this paper, for matrix-valued $L\log L$-Orlicz potentials supported on the whole manifold, Rozenblum's results are direct consequences of the Cwikel-typ…
A uniform elliptic reduction, an order-matching criterion, and precision benchmarks for the strong-coupling Birman-Schwinger analysis of the lattice three-boson trimer
In this note we consider the self-adjoint Schrödinger operator $\mathsf{A}_α$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $d\geq 2$, with a $δ$-potential supported on a Lipschitz hypersurface $Σ\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ of strength $α\in L^p(Σ)+L^\infty(Σ)$. We show the uniqueness of the ground state and, under some additional conditions on the coefficient $α$ and the hypersurface $Σ$, we determine the essential spectrum of $\mathsf{A}_α$. In the special case that $Σ$ is a hyperplane we obtain a Birman-Schwinger principle with a relativistic Schrödinger operator as Birman-Schwinger operator. As an application we pro…
We study several natural multiplicity questions that arise in the context of the Birman-Schwinger principle applied to non-self-adjoint operators. In particular, we re-prove (and extend) a recent result by Latushkin and Sukhtyaev by employing a different technique based on factorizations of analytic operator-valued functions due to Howland. Factorizations of analytic operator-valued functions are of particular interest in themselves and again we re-derive Howland's results and subsequently extend them. Considering algebraic multiplicities of finitely meromorphic operator-valued functions, we r…
We give a proof that in settings where Von Neumann deficiency indices are finite the spectral counting functions of two different self-adjoint extensions of the same symmetric operator differ by a uniformly bounded term (see also Birman-Solomjak's 'Spectral Theory of Self-adjoint operators in Hilbert Space') >. We apply this result to quantum graphs, pseudo-laplacians and surfaces with conical singularities.
We prove a sharp Hardy-type inequality for the Dirac operator. We exploit this inequality to obtain spectral properties of the Dirac operator perturbed with Hermitian matrix-valued potentials $\mathbf V$ of Coulomb type: we characterise its eigenvalues in terms of the Birman-Schwinger principle and we bound its discrete spectrum from below, showing that the \emph{ground-state energy} is reached if and only if $\mathbf V$ verifies some {rigidity} conditions. In the particular case of an electrostatic potential, these imply that $\mathbf V$ is the Coulomb potential.
We obtain, using the Birman-Schwinger method, upper limits on the total number of bound states and on the number of $\ell$-wave bound states of the semirelativistic spinless Salpeter equation. We also obtain a simple condition, in the ultrarelativistic case ($m=0$), for the existence of at least one $\ell$-wave bound states: $C(\ell,p/(p-1))$ $\int_0^{\infty}dr r^{p-1} |V^-(r)|^p\ge 1$, where $C(\ell,p/(p-1))$ is a known function of $\ell$ and $p>1$.
In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Rob…
We revisit and connect several notions of algebraic multiplicities of zeros of analytic operator-valued functions and discuss the concept of the index of meromorphic operator-valued functions in complex, separable Hilbert spaces. Applications to abstract perturbation theory and associated Birman-Schwinger-type operators and to the operator-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh functions associated to closed extensions of dual pairs of closed operators are provided.
We discuss a generalized Schrödinger operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d), d=2,3$, with an attractive singular interaction supported by a $(d-1)$-dimensional hyperplane and a finite family of points. It can be regarded as a model of a leaky quantum wire and a family of quantum dots if $d=2$, or surface waves in presence of a finite number of impurities if $d=3$. We analyze the discrete spectrum, and furthermore, we show that the resonance problem in this setting can be explicitly solved; by Birman-Schwinger method it is cast into a form similar to the Friedrichs model.
Let $Ω\subset {\bf R}^d$ be a bounded open set with Lipschitz boundary $Γ$. It will be shown that the Jordan chains of m-sectorial second-order elliptic partial differential operators with measurable coefficients and (local or non-local) Robin boundary conditions in $L_2(Ω)$ can be characterized with the help of Jordan chains of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map and the boundary operator from $H^{1/2}(Γ)$ into $H^{-1/2}(Γ)$. This result extends the Birman--Schwinger principle in the framework of elliptic operators for the characterization of eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and geometric eigenspaces to …
We explore connections between Krein's spectral shift function $ξ(λ,H_0,H)$ associated with the pair of self-adjoint operators $(H_0,H)$, $H=H_0+V$ in a Hilbert space $\calH$ and the recently introduced concept of a spectral shift operator $Ξ(J+K^*(H_0-λ-i0)^{-1}K)$ associated with the operator-valued Herglotz function $J+K^*(H_0-z)^{-1}K$, $\Im(z)>0$ in $\calH$, where $V=KJK^*$ and $J=\sgn(V)$. Our principal results include a new representation for $ξ(λ,H_0,H)$ in terms of an averaged index for the Fredholm pair of self-adjoint spectral projections $(E_{J+A(λ)+tB(λ)}((-\infty,0)),E_J((-\infty…
In this note self-adjoint realizations of second order elliptic differential expressions with non-local Robin boundary conditions on a domain $Ω\subset\dR^n$ with smooth compact boundary are studied. A Schatten--von Neumann type estimate for the singular values of the difference of the $m$th powers of the resolvents of two Robin realizations is obtained, and for $m>\tfrac{n}{2}-1$ it is shown that the resolvent power difference is a trace class operator. The estimates are slightly stronger than the classical singular value estimates by M. Sh. Birman where one of the Robin realizations is repla…
