We study generalized Horn-Kapranov rational parametrizations of inhomogeneous sparse discriminants from both a theoretical and an algorithmic perspective. We show that all these parametrizations are birational and prove some results on the corresponding implicit equations. We also propose a combinatorial algorithm to compute the degree of inhomogeneous discriminantal surfaces associated to uniform matrices.

Discriminant of the ordinary transversal singularity type. The local aspects

Consider a space X with the singular locus, Z=Sing(X), of positive dimension. Suppose both Z and X are locally complete intersections. The transversal type of X along Z is generically constant but at some points of Z it degenerates. Topological type of discriminants of some special families

We will describe the topological type of the discriminant curve of the morphism $(\ell, f)$, where $\ell$ is a smooth curve and $f$ is an irreducible curve (branch) of multiplicity less than five or a branch that the difference between its Milnor number and Tjurina number is less than 3. We prove that for a branch of these families, the topological type of the discriminant curve is determined by the semigroup, the Zariski invariant and at most two other analytical invariants of the branch.

Discriminants of stable rank two sheaves on some general type surfaces

We prove sharp bounds on the discriminants of stable rank two sheaves on surfaces in three-dimensional projective space. The key technical ingredient is to study them as torsion sheaves in projective space via tilt stability in the derived category. We then proceed to describe the surface itself as a moduli space of rank two vector bundles on it. Lastly, we give a proof of the Bogomolov inequality for semistable rank two sheaves on integral surfaces in three-dimensional projective space in all characteristics.

Discriminants of Toric Varieties

We study the subvariety of singular sections, the discriminant, of a base point free linear system $|L|$ on a smooth toric variety $X$. On one hand we describe pairs $(X,L)$ for which the discriminant is of low dimension. Precisely, we collect some bounds on this dimension and classify those pairs whose dimension differs the bound less than or equal to two. On the other hand we study the degree of the discriminant for some relevant families on polarized toric varieties, describing their minimal values and the region of the ample cone where this minimal is attained.

Some observations about isogenies between $K3$ surfaces

Even if there are too many elliptic fibrations to investigate and describe on the singular $K3$ surface $Y_{10}$ of discriminant 72 and belonging to the Apéry-Fermi pencil $(Y_k)$, we find on it many interesting properties. For example some of its elliptic fibrations with 3-torsion section induce by 3-isogeny either an elliptic fibration of $Y_2$, the unique $K3$ surface of discriminant 8, or an elliptic fibration of other $K3$ surfaces of discriminant 72.

On a discriminant knot group problem of Brieskorn

Quite some time ago, at the singularity conference at Cargèse 1972 Brieskorn asked the following question: Is the local fundamental group $π_1^{s}(S-D)$ of the discriminant complement inside the semi-universal unfolding $S$ of an isolated hypersurface singularity constant for $s$ in the $μ$-constant stratum $Σ_E$? We review this question and give an affirmative answer in case of singular plane curve germs of multiplicity at most $3$.
