Relating the Farrell Nil-groups to the Waldhausen Nil-groups

We prove that the Waldhausen Nil-group associated to a virtually cyclic groups that surjects onto the infinite dihedral group vanishes if and only if the corresponding Farrell Nil-group associated to the canonical index two subgroup is trivial. The proof uses the transfer map to establish one direction, and uses controlled pseudo-isotopy techniques of Farrell-Jones to establish the reverse implication.

On the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for Waldhausen's $A$-theory

We prove the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for (non-connective) $A$-theory with coefficients and finite wreath products for hyperbolic groups, CAT(0)-groups, cocompact lattices in almost connected Lie groups and fundamental groups of manifolds of dimension less or equal to three. Moreover, we prove inheritance properties such as passing to subgroups, colimits of direct systems of groups, finite direct products and finite free products. These results hold also for Whitehead spectra and spectra of stable pseudo-isotopies in the topological, piecewise linear and smooth category.

Revisiting Farrell's nonfiniteness of Nil

We study Farrell Nil-groups associated to a finite order automorphism of a ring $R$. We show that any such Farrell Nil-group is either trivial, or infinitely generated (as an abelian group). Building on this first result, we then show that any finite group that occurs in such a Farrell Nil-group occurs with infinite multiplicity. If the original finite group is a direct summand, then the countably infinite sum of the finite subgroup also appears as a direct summand. Acylindrical Actions on Trees and the Farrell-Jones Conjecture

We show that for groups acting acylindrically on simplicial trees the $K$- and $L$-theoretic Farrell-Jones Conjecture relative to the family of subgroups consisting of virtually cyclic subgroups and all subconjugates of vertex stabilisers holds. As an application, for amalgamated free products acting acylindrically on their Bass-Serre trees we obtain an identification of the associated Waldhausen Nil-groups with a direct sum of Nil-groups associated to certain virtually cyclic groups. Splitting formulas for certain Waldhausen Nil-groups

For a group G that splits as an amalgamation of A and B over a common subgroup C, there is an associated Waldhausen Nil-group, measuring the "failure" of Mayer-Vietoris for algebraic K-theory. Assume that (1) the amalgamation is acylindrical, and (2) the groups A,B,G satisfy the Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjecture. Then we show that the Waldhausen Nil-group splits as a direct sum of Nil-groups associated to certain (explicitly describable) infinite virtually cyclic subgroups of G. We note that a special case of an acylindrical amalgamation includes any amalgamation over a finite group C.

Algebraic K-theory over the infinite dihedral group: a controlled topology approach

We use controlled topology applied to the action of the infinite dihedral group on a partially compactified plane and deduce two consequences for algebraic K-theory. Algebraic K-theory over the infinite dihedral group: an algebraic approach

We prove that the Waldhausen nilpotent class group of an injective index 2 amalgamated free product is isomorphic to the Farrell-Bass nilpotent class group of a twisted polynomial extension. As an application, we show that the Farrell-Jones Conjecture in algebraic K-theory can be sharpened from the family of virtually cyclic subgroups to the family of finite-by-cyclic subgroups.

Splitting the relative assembly map, Nil-terms and involutions

We show that the relative Farrell-Jones assembly map from the family of finite subgroups to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups for algebraic K-theory is split injective in the setting where the coefficients are additive categories with group action.
