We consider the Cauchy problem for nonlinear Schrodinger equations in the presence of a smooth, possibly unbounded, potential. No assumption is made on the sign of the potential. If the potential grows at most linearly at infinity, we construct solutions in Sobolev spaces (without weight), locally in time. Under some natural assumptions, we prove that the $H^1$-solutions are global in time. On the other hand, if the potential has a super-linear growth, then the Sobolev regularity of positive order is lost instantly, not matter how large it is, unless the initial datum decays sufficiently fast at infinity.
In this paper, we consider in $R^n$ the Cauchy problem for nonlinear Schrödinger equation with initial data in Sobolev space $W^{s,p}$ for $p<2$. It is well known that this problem is ill posed. However, We show that after a linear transformation by the linear semigroup the problem becomes locally well posed in $W^{s,p}$ for $\frac{2n}{n+1}<p<2$ and $s>n(1-\frac{1}{p})$. Moreover, we show that in one space dimension, the problem is locally well posed in $L^p$ for any $1<p<2$.
In this paper we establish optimal solvability results, that is, maximal regularity theorems, for the Cauchy problem for linear parabolic differential equations of arbitrary order acting on sections of tensor bundles over boundaryless complete Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. We employ an anisotropic extension of the Fourier multiplier theorem for arbitrary Besov spaces introduced in earlier by the author. This allows for a unified treatment of Sobolev-Slobodeckii and little Hölder spaces. In the flat case we recover classical results for Petrowskii-parabolic Cauchy problems.
We proved the local well-posedness for the power-type nonlinear semi-relativistic or half-wave equation (NLHW) in Sobolev spaces. Our proofs mainly bases on the contraction mapping argument using Strichartz estimate. We also apply the technique of Christ-Colliander- Tao in \cite{ChristCollianderTao} to prove the ill-posedness for (NLHW) in some cases of the super-critical range.
We study the well-posedness in weighted Sobolev spaces, for the initial value problem (IVP) associated with the dissipative Benjamin-Ono (dBO) equation. We establish persistence properties of the solution flow in the weighted Sobolev spaces $\z_{s,r}=H^s(\R)\cap L^2(|x|^{2r}dx)$, $s\geq r>0$. We also prove some unique continuation properties in these spaces. In particular, such results of unique continuation show that our results of well posedness are sharp.
In this work we study the initial value problem (IVP) for the fifth order KdV equations, \begin{align*} \partial_{t}u+\partial_{x}^{5}u+u^k\partial_{x}u=0,\text{} & \quad x,t\in \mathbb R, \quad k=1,2, \end{align*} in weighted Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb R)\cap L^2(\langle x \rangle^{2r}dx)$. We prove local and global results. In the case $k=2$ we point out the relation between decay and regularity of the solution of the IVP.
In this paper we study the existence of solutions and their concentration phenomena of a singularly perturbed semilinear Schrodinger equation with the presence of the critical Sobolev exponent.
The Cauchy problem for the two dimensional compressible Euler equations with data in the Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb R^2)$ is known to have a unique solution of the same Sobolev class for a short time, and the data-to-solution map is continuous. We prove that the data-to-solution map on the plane is not uniformly continuous on any bounded subset of Sobolev class functions.
In this paper, we consider the 3D Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation arising in nonlinear acoustics. First, we prove that the solution exists globally in time provided that the lower order Sobolev norms of the initial data are considered to be small, while the higher-order norms can be arbitrarily large. This improves some available results in the literature. Second, we prove a new decay estimate for the linearized model and removing the $L^1$-assumption on the initial data. The proof of this decay estimate is based on the high-frequency and low-frequency decomposition of the solution to…
In this paper, the existence, uniqueness and regularity properties, Strichartz type estimates for solution of multipoint Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations with general elliptic leading part is obtained.
In this work we prove that the initial value problem (IVP) associated to the two-dimensional Benjamin-Ono equation $$\left. \begin{array}{rl} u_t+\mathcal H Δu +uu_x &\hspace{-2mm}=0,\qquad\qquad (x,y)\in\mathbb T^2,\; t\in\mathbb R,\\ u(x,y,0)&\hspace{-2mm}=u_0(x,y), \end{array} \right\}\,,$$ where $\mathcal H$ denotes the Hilbert transform with respect to the variable $x$ and $Δ$ is the Laplacian with respect to the spatial variables $x$ and $y$, is locally well-posed in the periodic Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb T^2)$, with $s>7/4$.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^d$, where the initial data is in $\dot{H}^1(\mathbb{R}^d)\cap L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We prove local well-posedness for large ranges of $p$ and discuss some global well-posedness results.
In this paper we obtain a stabilization result for the Schrödinger equation under generic assumptions on the potential. Then we consider the Schrödinger equation with a potential which has a random time-dependent amplitude. We show that if the distribution of the amplitude is sufficiently non-degenerate, then any trajectory of system is almost surely non-bounded in Sobolev spaces.
In this paper, we study the solitary wave and the Cauchy problem for Half-wave-Schrödinger equations in the plane. First, we show the existence and orbital stability of the ground states. Secondly, we prove that traveling waves exist and converge to zero as the velocity tends to $1$. Finally, we solve the Cauchy problem for initial data in $L^{2}_{x}H^{s}_{y}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$, with $s>\frac{1}{2}$.
We consider a system of coupled cubic Schrödinger equations. We prove that there exists a beating effect, i.e. an energy exchange between different modes. This construction may be transported to the linear time-dependent Schrödinger equation: we build solutions such that their Sobolev norms grow logarithmically. All these results are stated for large but finite times.
In this note, we consider the ill-posedness issue for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular, we prove norm inflation based at every initial condition in negative Sobolev spaces below or at the scaling critical regularity.
We prove that, the initial value problem associated to u_{t} + i\alphau_{xx} + βu_{xxx} + iγ|u|^{2}u = 0, x,t \in R, is locally well-posed in Sobolev spaces H^{s} for s>-1/4.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the fifth-order KP-I equation \begin{align*} u_t + \partial_x^5u+\partial_x^{-1}\partial_y^2u + \frac{1}{2}\partial_x(u^2)=0. \end{align*} Firstly, we establish the local well-posedness of the problem in the anisotropic Sobolev spaces $H^{s_1, s_2}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $s_1>-\frac{9}{8}$ and $s_2\geq 0$. Secondly, we establish the global well-posedness of the problem in $H^{s_1,0}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $s_1>-\frac{4}{7}$. Our result improves considerably the results of Saut and Tzvetkov (J. Math.\ Pures Appl.\ 79(2000), 307--338.) and Li and Xiao …
We consider the Cauchy problem for the rotation-modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (RMKP) equation \begin{align*} \partial_{x}\left(u_{t}-β\partial_{x}^{3}u +\partial_{x}(u^{2})\right)+\partial_{y}^{2}u-γu=0 \end{align*} in the anisotropic Sobolev spaces $H^{s_{1},\>s_{2}}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$. When $β<0$ and $γ>0,$ we prove that the Cauchy problem is locally well-posed in $H^{s_{1},\>s_{2}}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ with $s_{1}>-\frac{1}{2}$ and $s_{2}\geq 0$. Our result considerably improves the Theorem 1.4 of R. M. Chen, Y. Liu, P. Z. Zhang( Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 364(2012), 339…
In this paper, we first show that there exists a maximizer for the non-endpoint Strichartz inequalities for the Schrödinger equation in all dimensions based on the recent linear profile decomposition results. We then present a new proof of the linear profile decomposition for the Schröindger equation with initial data in the homogeneous Sobolev space; as a consequence, there exists a maximizer for the Sobolev-Strichartz inequality.
In this paper we consider the cubic Schrodinger equation in two space dimensions on irrational tori. Our main result is an improvement of the Strichartz estimates on irrational tori. Using this estimate we obtain a local well-posedness result in H^s for s>131/416. We also obtain improved growth bounds for higher order Sobolev norms.
We prove uniform Sobolev estimates for the resolvent of Schrödinger operators with large scaling-critical potentials without any repulsive condition. As applications, global-in-time Strichartz estimates including some non-admissible retarded estimates, a Hörmander type spectral multiplier theorem, and Keller type eigenvalue bounds with complex-valued potentials are also obtained.
We study the energy cascade problematic for some nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the torus $\T^2$ in terms of the growth of Sobolev norms. We define the notion of long-time strong instability and establish its connection to the existence of unbounded Sobolev orbits. This connection is then explored for a family of cubic Schrödinger nonlinearities that are equal or closely related to the standard polynomial one $|u|^2u$. Most notably, we prove the existence of unbounded Sobolev orbits for a family of Hamiltonian cubic nonlinearities that includes the resonant cubic NLS equation (a.k.a. the f…
We study Cauchy problem for the Klein-Gordon (HNLKG), wave (HNLW) and Schrödinger (HNLS) equations with cubic convolution (Hartree type) nonlinearity. Some global well-posedness and scattering are obtained for the (HNLKG) and (HNLS) with small Cauchy data in some modulation spaces. Global well-posedness for fractional Schrödinger (fNLSH) equation with Hartree type nonlinearity is obtained with Cauchy data in some modulation spaces. Local well-posedness for (HNLW), (fHNLS) and (HNLKG) with rough data in modulation spaces is shown. This improves known results in Sobolev spaces in some sense. As …
It is shown that plane wave solutions to the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a torus behave orbitally stable under generic perturbations of the initial data that are small in a high-order Sobolev norm, over long times that extend to arbitrary negative powers of the smallness parameter. The perturbation stays small in the same Sobolev norm over such long times. The proof uses a Hamiltonian reduction and transformation and, alternatively, Birkhoff normal forms or modulated Fourier expansions in time.
We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on product manifolds $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}$. In this paper, we obtain polynomial bounds on the growth in time of high Sobolev norms of the solutions. The main ingredient of the proof is to establish an iteration bound, which is based on the idea used by Bourgain in \cite{B1}.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a potential on $\mathbb T^d$. For almost all potentials, we show the almost global stability in very high Sobolev norms. We apply an iteration of the Birkhoff normal form, as in the formulation introduced by Bourgain \cite{Bo00}. This result reprove a dynamical consequence of the infinite dimensional Birkhoff normal form theorem by Bambusi and Grebert \cite{BG}
We study the wellposedness of Cauchy problem for the fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equations i\partial_t u=-\epsΔu+Δ^2 u+P((\partial_x^αu)_{\absα\ls 2}, (\partial_x^α\bar{u})_{\absα\ls 2}),\quad t\in \Real, x\in\Real^n, where $\eps\in\{-1,0,1\}$, $n\gs 2$ denotes the spatial dimension and $P(\cdot)$ is a polynomial excluding constant and linear terms.
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the energy-critical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_{t}u+Δu=λ|x|^{-α}|u|^βu$ in $H^1$. The well-posedness theory in $H^1$ has been intensively studied in recent years, but the currently known approaches do not work for the critical case $β=(4-2α)/(n-2)$. It is still an open problem. The main contribution of this paper is to develop the theory in this case.
The goal of this paper is three-fold. Firstly, we prove that the Cauchy problem for generalized KP-I equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+|D_{x}|^α\partial_{x}u+\partial_{x}^{-1}\partial_{y}^{2}u+\frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})=0,α\geq4 \end{eqnarray*} is locally well-posed in the anisotropic Sobolev spaces$ H^{s_{1},\>s_{2}}(\R^{2})$ with $s_{1}>-\frac{α-1}{4}$ and $s_{2}\geq 0$. Secondly, we prove that the problem is globally well-posed in $H^{s_{1},\>0}(\R^{2})$ with $s_{1}>-\frac{(α-1)(3α-4)}{4(5α+3)}$ if $4\leq α\leq5$. Finally, we prove that the problem is globally well-posed in $H^{s_{1},\>0…
Let $σ\in(0,1)$ with $σ\neq\frac{1}{2}$. We investigate the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb R^d$: $$i\partial_tu+(-Δ)^σu+μ|u|^{p-1}u=0,\, u(0)=u_0\in H^s,$$ where $(-Δ)^σ$ is the Fourier multiplier of symbol $|ξ|^{2σ}$, and $μ=\pm 1$. This model has been introduced by Laskin in quantum physics \cite{laskin}. We establish local well-posedness and ill-posedness in Sobolev spaces for power-type nonlinearities.
The existence and uniqueness in Sobolev spaces of solutions of the Cauchy problem to parabolic integro-differential equation of the order α\in(0,2) is investigated. The principal part of the operator has kernel m(t,x,y)/|y|^{d+α} with a bounded nondegenerate m, Hölder in x and measurable in y. The lower order part has bounded and measurable coefficients. The result is applied to prove the existence and uniqueness of the corresponding martingale problem.
These are lectures notes for a 6 hour course given at PCMI, Park City, Utah, in the summer of 2003. The notes are based on a series of joint works of Kenig-Ponce-Vega. Each lecture had problems assigned with it. The lecture notes were prepared with the help of Justin Holmer. Justin Holmer also provided solutions to the problems, in an appendix to the notes.
In this paper, we establish a standard $L^p$-theory of solutions to one dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations with the power like nonlinearity. More precisely, we extend the following three well-known results in the $L^2$ space into $L^p$ setting: 1. Large data local well-posedness for subcritical nonlinearities, 2. Small data global well-posedness for critical nonlinearities, 3. Large data global well-posedness if the subcritical nonlinearity is given by $|u|^{α-1}u$.
Solutions to the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the real line are studied in Sobolev spaces $H^s$, for $s$ negative but close to 0. For smooth solutions there is an {\em a priori} upper bound for the $H^s$ norm of the solution, in terms of the $H^s$ norm of the datum, for arbitrarily large data, for sufficiently short time. Weak solutions are constructed for arbitrary initial data in $H^s$.
We start with the classic result that the Cauchy problem for ideal compressible gas dynamics is locally well posed in time in the sense of Hadamard; there is a unique solution that depends continuously on initial data in Sobolev space $H^s$ for $s>d/2+1$ where $d$ is the space dimension. We prove that the data to solution map for periodic data in two dimensions although continuous is not uniformly continuous on any bounded subset of Sobolev class functions.
We study the Cauchy problem for the fractional Schrödinger equation $$ i\partial_tu = (m^2-Δ)^\frac\alpha2 u + F(u) in \mathbb{R}^{1+n}, $$ where $ n \ge 1$, $m \ge 0$, $1 < α< 2$, and $F$ stands for the nonlinearity of Hartree type: $$F(u) = λ(\frac{ψ(\cdot)}{|\cdot|^γ} * |u|^2)u$$ with $λ= \pm1, 0 <γ< n$, and $0 \le ψ\in L^\infty(\mathbb R^n)$. We prove the existence and uniqueness of local and global solutions for certain $α$, $γ$, $λ$, $ψ$. We also remark on finite time blowup of solutions when $λ= -1$.
We study the $L^p$-theory for the Schrödinger operator $\mathcal L_a$ with inverse-square potential $a|x|^{-2}$. Our main result describes when $L^p$-based Sobolev spaces defined in terms of the operator $(\mathcal L_a)^{s/2}$ agree with those defined via $(-Δ)^{s/2}$. We consider all regularities $0<s<2$. In order to make the paper self-contained, we also review (with proofs) multiplier theorems, Littlewood-Paley theory, and Hardy-type inequalities associated to the operator $\mathcal L_a$.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of the modified Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation on $\mathbb{R}^d$. If $d=2$, we prove the sharp estimate which implies local in time well-posedness in the Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $s \geq 1/4$. If $d \geq 3$, by employing $U^p$ and $V^p$ spaces, we establish the small data global well-posedness in the scaling critical Sobolev space $H^{s_c}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ where $s_c = d/2-1$.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for semilinear $σ$-evolution models with an exponential decay memory term. Concerning the corresponding linear Cauchy problem, we derive some regularity-loss-type estimates of solutions and generalized diffusion phenomena. Particularly, the obtained estimations for solutions are sharper than those in the previous paper [20]. Then, we determine the critical exponents for the semilinear Cauchy problem with power nonlinearity in some spatial dimensions by proving global (in time) existence of Sobolev solutions with low regularity of fractional orders …
We consider the inverse boundary value problem of determining the potential $q$ in the equation $Δu + qu = 0$ in $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, from local Cauchy data. A result of global Lipschitz stability is obtained in dimension $n\geq 3$ for potentials that are piecewise linear on a given partition of $Ω$. No sign, nor spectrum condition on $q$ is assumed, hence our treatment encompasses the reduced wave equation $Δu + k^2c^{-2}u=0$ at fixed frequency $k$.
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of the quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^2$ with the nonlinearity $η|u|^2$ where $η\in \mathbb{C} \setminus \{0\}$ and low regularity initial data. If $s < -1/4$, the ill-posedness result in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ is known. We will prove the well-posedness in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $-1/2 < s < -1/4$ by assuming some angular regularity on initial data. The key tools are the modified Fourier restriction norm and the convolution estimate on thickened hypersurfaces.
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the linear spatially homogeneous Boltzamnn equation with Debye-Yukawa potential. Using the spectral decomposition of the linear operator, we prove that, for an initial datum in the sense of distribution which contains the dual of the Sobolev spaces, there exists a unique solution which belongs to a more regular Sobolev space for any positive time. We also study the sharp regularity of the solution.
In this paper, we investigate the well-posedess of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of Navier-Stokes equations, and prove that the classical solution with finite energy does not exist even in the inhomogeneous Sobolev space for any short time under some natural assumptions on initial data near the vacuum. This implies in particular that the homogeneous Sobolev space is crucial as studying the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum at far fields even locally in time.
In this work I study the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem associated with the coupled Schrödinger equations {with quadratic nonlinearities}, which appears modeling problems in nonlinear optics. I obtain the local well-posedness for data {in Sobolev spaces} with low regularity. {To obtain} the local theory, I prove new bilinear estimates for the coupling terms of the system in the continuous case. Concerning global results, in the continuous case, I establish the global well-posedness in $H^s(\mathbb{R})\times H^s(\mathbb{R})$, for some negatives indexes $s$. The proof of the global result …
In the present paper, we deal with a new compact embedding theorem for a subspace of the new fractional Orlicz-Sobolev spaces. We also establish some useful inequalities which yields to apply the variational methods. Using these abstract results, we study the existence of infinitely many nontrivial solutions for a class of fractional Orlicz-Sobolev Schrödinger equations whose simplest prototype is $$(-\triangle)^{s}_{m}+V(x)m(u)u=f(x,u),\ x\in\mathbb{R}^{N},$$ where $s\in ]0,1[$, $N\geq2$, $(-\triangle)^{s}_{m}$ is fractional $M$-Laplace operator and the nonlinearity $f$ is sublinear as $|u| \…
In this paper, we are going to investigate Cauchy problem for nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the initial potential $q_0(x)$ in weighted sobolev space $H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$, \begin{align*} iq_t(x,t)&+q_{xx}(x,t)+2σq^2(x,t)\bar q(-x,t)=0,\quadσ=\pm1,\\ q(x,0)&=q_0(x). \end{align*} We show that the solution can be represented by the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem (RH problem), and assuming no discrete spectrum, we majorly apply $\bar\partial$-steepest cescent descent method on analyzing the long-time asymptotic behavior of it.
In this paper and the companion work \cite{LIZE2}, we prove that the Schrödinger map flows from $\Bbb R^d$ with $d\ge 2$ to compact Kähler manifolds with small initial data in critical Sobolev spaces are global. The main difficulty compared with the constant sectional curvature case is that the gauged equation now is not self-contained due to the curvature part. Our main idea is to use a novel bootstrap-iteration scheme to reduce the gauged equation to an approximate constant curvature system in finite times of iteration. This paper with the companion work \cite{LIZE2} solves the open problem …
In this paper we prove the existence of positive solutions of the following singular quasilinear Schrödinger equations at critical growth \begin{eqnarray*} -Δu-λc(x)u-κα(Δ(|u|^{2α}))|u|^{2α-2}u = |u|^{q-2}u+|u|^{2^*-2}u,\quad u\in{D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}}^N), \end{eqnarray*} via variational methods, where $λ\geq0$, $0<α<1/2$, $2<q<2^*$. It is interesting that we do not need to add a weight function to control $|u|^{q-2}u$.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with derivative nonlinearity $(i\partial _t + Δ^2) u= \pm \partial (|u|^2u)$ on $\mathbb{R} ^d$, $d \ge 3$, with random initial data, where $\partial$ is a first order derivative with respect to the spatial variable, for example a linear combination of $\frac{\partial}{\partial x_1} , \, \dots , \, \frac{\partial}{\partial x_d}$ or $|\nabla |= \mathcal{F}^{-1}[|ξ| \mathcal{F}]$. We prove that almost sure local in time well-posedness, small data global in time well-posedness and scattering hold in $H^s(\mathbb{R}…
