We prove that the Auslander class determined by a semidualizing module is the left half of a perfect cotorsion pair. We also prove that the Bass class determined by a semidualizing module is preenveloping.
We introduce the notion of a duality pair and demonstrate how the left half of such a pair is often covering and preenveloping. As an application, we generalize a result by Enochs et al. on Auslander and Bass classes, and we prove that the class of Gorenstein injective modules introduced by Enochs and Jenda is covering when the ground ring has a dualizing complex.
Let R be a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring. Recent work has shown that there is a bridge between Auslander categories and modules of finite Gorenstein homological dimensions over R. We use Gorenstein dimensions to prove new results about Auslander categories and vice versa. For example, we establish base change relations between the Auslander categories of the source and target rings in a homomorphism R -> S of finite flat dimension.
We give a principle in derived categories, which lies behind the classical Auslander-Reiten duality and its generalized version by Iyama and Wemyss. We apply the principle to show the validity of the Auslander-Reiten conjecture over a Gorenstein ring in the case where the ring has dimension larger than two and the singular locus has at most one dimension.
We define the symmetric Auslander category A^s(R) to consist of complexes of projective modules whose left- and right-tails are equal to the left- and right tails of totally acyclic complexes of projective modules. The symmetric Auslander category contains A(R), the ordinary Auslander category. It is well known that A(R) is intimately related to Gorenstein projective modules, and our main result is that A^s(R) is similarly related to what can reasonably be called Gorenstein projective homomorphisms. Namely, there is an equivalence of triangulated categories: \underline{GMor}(R) --> A^s(R) / K^…
This paper is an expanded version of two talks given by the author at the Summer School on the Interactions between Homotopy Theory and Algebra at the University of Chicago, July 26 to August 6, 2004. It describes a connection between model categories, a structure invented by algebraic topologists that allows one to introduce the ideas of homotopy theory to situations far removed from topological spaces, and cotorsion pairs, an algebraic notion that simultaneously generalizes the notion of projective and injective objects. It also gives some applications of this connection, some due to the aut…
In this paper, we study Gorenstein injective, projective, and flat modules over a Noetherian ring $R$. For an $R$-module $M$, we denote by ${\rm Gpd}_RM$ and ${\rm Gfd}_R M$ the Gorenstein projective and flat dimensions of $M$, respectively. We show that ${\rm Gpd}_RM<\infty$ if and only if ${\rm Gfd}_RM<\infty$ provided the Krull dimension of $R$ is finite. Moreover, in the case that $R$ is local, we correspond to a dualizing complex ${\bf D}$ of $\hat{R}$, the classes $A'(R)$ and $B'(R)$ of $R$-modules. For a module $M$ over a local ring $R$, we show that $M\in A'(R)$ if and only if ${\rm Gp…
Auslander-Reiten theory is fundamental to study categories which appear in representation theory, for example, modules over artin algebras, Cohen-Macaulay modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings, lattices over orders, and coherent sheaves on projective curves. In these Auslander-Reiten theories, the number `2' is quite symbolic. For one thing, almost split sequences give minimal projective resolutions of simple functors of projective dimension `2'. For another, Cohen-Macaulay rings of Krull-dimension `2' provide us with one of the most beautiful situation in representation theory, which is closely r…
Let $R$ be an isolated Gorenstein singularity with a non-commutative resolution $A=End_R(R\oplus M)$. In this paper, we show that the relative singularity category $Δ_R(A)$ of $A$ has a number of pleasant properties, such as being Hom-finite. Moreover, it determines the classical singularity category $D_{sg}(R)$ of Buchweitz and Orlov as a certain canonical quotient category. If $R$ has finite CM type, which includes for example Kleinian singularities, then we show the much more surprising result that $D_{sg}(R)$ determines $Δ_R(Aus(R))$, where $Aus(R)$ is the corresponding Auslander algebra. …
We introduce syzygies for derived categories and study their properties. Using these, we prove the derived invariance of the following classes of artin algebras: (1) syzygy-finite algebras, (2) Igusa-Todorov algebras, (3) AC algebras, (4) algebras satisfying the finitistic Auslander conjecture, and (5) algebras satisfying the generalized Auslander-Reiten conjecture. In particular, Gorenstein CM-finite algebras are derived invariants.
One of the first remarkable results in the representation theory of artin algebras, due to Auslander and Ringel-Tachikawa, is the characterization of when an artin algebra is representation-finite. In this paper, we investigate aspects of representation-finiteness in the general context of exact categories in the sense of Quillen. In this framework, we introduce "big objects" and prove an Auslander-type "splitting-big-objects" theorem. Our approach generalises and unifies the known results from the literature. As a further application of our methods, we extend the theorems of Auslander and Rin…
By Auslander's algebraic McKay correspondence, the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a simple singularity is equivalent to the $1$-cluster category of the path algebra of a Dynkin quiver (i.e. the orbit category of the derived category by the action of the Auslander-Reiten translation). In this paper we give a systematic method to construct a similar type of triangle equivalence between the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein isolated singularity $R$ and the generalized (higher) cluster category of a finite dimensional algebra $Λ$. The key role is played by…
We describe a general correspondence between injective (resp. projective) recollements of triangulated categories and injective (resp. projective) cotorsion pairs. This provides a model category description of these recollement situations. Our applications focus on displaying several recollements that glue together various full subcategories of K(R), the homotopy category of chain complexes of modules over a general ring R. When R is (left) Noetherian ring, these recollements involve complexes built from the Gorenstein injective modules. When R is a (left) coherent ring for which all flat modu…
