p-adic entropy and a p-adic Fuglede-Kadison determinant

Using periodic points we study a notion of entropy with values in the p-adic numbers. This is done for actions of countable discrete residually finite groups $Γ$. For suitable $Γ= \mathbb{Z}^d$-actions we obtain p-adic analogues of multivariable Mahler measures. For certain actions of more general groups the p-adic entropy can be expressed in terms of a p-adic analogue of the Fuglede-Kadison determinant from the theory of von Neumann algebras. Many basic questions remain open.

Fuglede-Kadison determinants and entropy for actions of discrete amenable groups

In 1990, Lind, Schmidt and Ward gave a formula for the entropy of certain $\mathbb{Z}^n$-dynamical systems attached to Laurent polynomials $P$, in terms of the (logarithmic) Mahler measure of $P$. We extend the expansive case of their result to the noncommutative setting where $\mathbb{Z}^n$ gets replaced by suitable discrete amenable groups. Generalizing the Mahler measure, Fuglede-Kadison determinants from the theory of group von Neumann algebras appear in the entropy formula.

Fuglede-Kadison Determinants and Sofic Entropy

We relate Fuglede-Kadison determinants to entropy of algebraic actions of sofic groups in essentially complete generality. This generalizes recent results of Hanfeng Li and Andreas Thom from the amenable case to the sofic case, as well as results of David Kerr, Hanfeng Li, and Lewis Bowen in the residually finite case. Moreover, the proof given is the first calculation of entropy of algebraic actions to avoid a nontrivial determinant approximation. Determinants on von Neumann algebras, Mahler measures and Ljapunov exponents

For an ergodic measure preserving action on a probability space, consider the corresponding crossed product von Neumann algebra. We calculate the Fuglede-Kadison determinant for a class of operators in this von Neumann algebra in terms of the Ljapunov exponents of an associated measurable cocycle. The proof is based on recent work of Dykema and Schultz. Lyapunov Exponents of Free Operators

Lyapunov exponents of a dynamical system are a useful tool to gauge the stability and complexity of the system. This paper offers a definition of Lyapunov exponents for a sequence of free linear operators. The definition is based on the concept of the extended Fuglede-Kadison determinant. We establish the existence of Lyapunov exponents, derive formulas for their calculation, and show that Lyapunov exponents of free variables are additive with respect to operator product. Entropy, Determinants, and L2-Torsion

We show that for any amenable group Γand any ZΓ-module M of type FL with vanishing Euler characteristic, the entropy of the natural Γ-action on the Pontryagin dual of M is equal to the L2-torsion of M. As a particular case, the entropy of the principal algebraic action associated with the module ZΓ/ZΓf is equal to the logarithm of the Fuglede-Kadison determinant of f whenever f is a non-zero-divisor in ZΓ.
