Shortly after Szemerédi's proof that a set of positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions, Furstenberg gave a new proof of this theorem using ergodic theory. This gave rise to the field of ergodic Ramsey Theory, in which problems motivated by additive combinatorics are proven using ergodic theory. Ergodic Ramsey Theory has since produced combinatorial results, some of which have yet to be obtained by other means, and has also given a deeper understanding of the structure of measure preserving systems. We outline the ergodic theory background needed to understand these results, with an emphasis on recent developments in ergodic theory and the relation to recent developments in additive combinatorics.
These notes are based on four lectures given during the School on Additive Combinatorics at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques, Montreal in April, 2006. The talks were aimed at an audience without background in ergodic theory. No attempt is made to include complete proofs of all statements and often the reader is referred to the original sources. Many of the proofs included are classic, included as an indication of which ingredients play a role in the developments of the past ten years.
Using an asymptotically additive sequence of continuous functions as a restrictive condition, this paper studies the relations of several ergodic averages for asymptotically additive potentials. Basic properties of conditional maximum ergodic averages are studied. In particular, if the dynamical systems satisfy the specification property, the maximal growth rate of an asymptotically additive potential on the level set is equal to its conditional maximum ergodic averages and the maximal growth rates on the irregular set is its maximum ergodic averages. Finally, the applications for suspension f…
In this paper, we investigate some ergodic properties of $Z^{2}$-actions $T_{p,n}$ generated by an additive cellular automata and shift acting on the space of all doubly -infinitive sequences taking values in $Z_{m}$.
This article is an exposition of recent results on self-similar sets, asserting that if the dimension is smaller than the trivial upper bound then there are almost overlaps between cylinders. We give a heuristic derivation of the theorem using elementary arguments about covering numbers. We also give a short introduction to additive combinatorics, focusing on inverse theorems, which play a pivotal role in the proof. Our elementary approach avoids many of the technicalities in the original proof but also falls short of a complete proof. In the last section we discuss how the heuristic argument …
We investigate uniform ergodic type theorems for additive and subadditive functions on a subshift over a finite alphabet. We show that every strictly ergodic subshift admits a uniform ergodic theorem for Banach-space-valued additive functions. We then give a necessary and sufficient condition on a minimal subshift to allow for a uniform subadditive ergodic theorem. This provides in particular a sufficient condition for unique ergodicity.
We survey some recent developments and give a list of open problems regarding multiple recurrence and convergence phenomena of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ actions in ergodic theory and related applications in combinatorics and number theory.
We establish a "diagonal" ergodic theorem involving the additive and multiplicative groups of a countable field $K$ and, with the help of a new variant of Furstenberg's correspondence principle, prove that any "large" set in $K$ contains many configurations of the form $\{x+y,xy\}$. We also show that for any finite coloring of $K$ there are many $x,y\in K$ such that $x,x+y$ and $xy$ have the same color. Finally, by utilizing a finitistic version of our main ergodic theorem, we obtain combinatorial results pertaining to finite fields. In particular we obtain an alternative proof for a result ob…
This paper is an exposition, with some new applications, of our results on the growth of entropy of convolutions. We explain the main result on $\mathbb{R}$, and derive, via a linearization argument, an analogous result for the action of the affine group on $\mathbb{R}$. We also develop versions of the results for entropy dimension and Hausdorff dimension. The method is applied to two problems on the border of fractal geometry and additive combinatorics. First, we consider attractors $X$ of compact families $Φ$ of similarities of $\mathbb{R}$. We conjecture that if $Φ$ is uncountable and $X$ i…
In this paper, we define and study unstable measure theoretic pressure for C^1-smooth partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with sub-additive potentials. For any ergodic measure, we show that this unstable metric pressure equals the corresponding unstable measure theoretic entropy plus the Lyapunov exponents with respect to the ergodic measure. On the other hand, we also define unstable topological and metric pressure in terms of the Bowen's picture and the capacity picture. We show that all these definitions of unstable metric pressure actually coincide for any ergodic measure.
In this paper we prove a general convergence theorem for almost-additive set functions on unimodular, amenable groups. These mappings take their values in some Banach space. By extending the theory of epsilon-quasi tiling techniques, we set the ground for far-reaching applications in the theory of group dynamics. In particular, we verify the almost-everywhere convergence of abstract approximable bounded, additive processes, as well as a Banach space approximation result for the spectral distribution function (integrated density of states) for random operators on discrete structures in a metric…
For a sequence of sub-additive potentials, Dai [Optimal state points of the sub-additive ergodic theorem, Nonlinearity, 24 (2011), 1565-1573] gave a method of choosing state points with negative growth rates for an ergodic dynamical system. This paper generalizes Dai's result to the non-ergodic case, and proves that under some mild additional hypothesis, one can choose points with negative growth rates from a positive Lebesgue measure set, even if the system does not preserve any measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure.
We survey some of the ideas behind the recent developments in additive number theory, combinatorics and ergodic theory leading to the proof of Hardy- Littlewood type estimates for the number of prime solutions to systems of linear equations of finite complexity.
A famous theorem of Szemerédi asserts that given any density $0 < δ\leq 1$ and any integer $k \geq 3$, any set of integers with density $δ$ will contain infinitely many proper arithmetic progressions of length $k$. For general $k$ there are essentially four known proofs of this fact; Szemerédi's original combinatorial proof using the Szemerédi regularity lemma and van der Waerden's theorem, Furstenberg's proof using ergodic theory, Gowers' proof using Fourier analysis and the inverse theory of additive combinatorics, and Gowers' more recent proof using a hypergraph regularity lemma. Of these f…
An asymptotic expansion is established for time averages of translation flows on flat surfaces. This result, which extends earlier work of A.Zorich and G.Forni, yields limit theorems for translation flows. The argument, close in spirit to that of G.Forni, uses the approximation of ergodic integrals by holonomy-invariant Hoelder cocycles on trajectories of the flows. The space of holonomy-invariant Hoelder cocycles is finite-dimensional, and is given by an explicit construction. First, a symbolic representation for a uniquely ergodic translation flow is obtained following S.Ito and A.M. Vershik…
We study deviation of ergodic averages for dynamical systems given by self-similar tilings on the plane and in higher dimensions. The main object of our paper is a special family of finitely-additive measures for our systems. An asymptotic formula is given for ergodic integrals in terms of these finitely-additive measures, and, as a corollary, limit theorems are obtained for dynamical systems given by self-similar tilings.
Tao has recently proved that if $T_1,...,T_l$ are commuting, invertible, measure-preserving transformations on a dynamical system then for any $L^\infty$ functions $f_1,...,f_l$, the average $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=0}^{N-1}\prod_{i\leq l}f_i\circ T^n_i$ converges in the $L^2$ norm. Tao's proof is unusual in that it translates the problem into a more complicated statement about the combinatorics of finite spaces by using the Furstenberg correspondence "backwards". In this paper, we give an ergodic proof of this theorem, essentially a translation of Tao's argument to the ergodic setting. In order to…
Ultrafilters are very useful and versatile objects with applications throughout mathematics: in topology, analysis, combinarotics, model theory, and even theory of social choice. Proofs based on ultrafilters tend to be shorter and more elegant than their classical counterparts. In this thesis, we survey some of the most striking ways in which ultrafilters can be exploited in combinatorics and ergodic theory, with a brief mention of model theory. In the initial sections, we establish the basics of the theory of ultrafilters in the hope of keeping our exposition possibly self-contained, and then…
This paper is devoted to study ergodic optimisation problems for almost-additive sequences of functions (rather than a fixed potential) defined over countable Markov shifts (that is a non-compact space). Under certain assumptions we prove that any accumulation point of a family of Gibbs equilibrium measures is a maximising measure. Applications are given in the study of the joint spectral radius and to multifractal analysis of Lyapunov exponent of non-conformal maps.
