Strong consistency and asymptotic normality of the Gaussian pseudo-maximum likelihood estimate of the parameters in a wide class of ARCH$(\infty)$ processes are established. The conditions are shown to hold in case of exponential and hyperbolic decay in the ARCH weights, though in the latter case a faster decay rate is required for the central limit theorem than for the law of large numbers. Particular parameterizations are discussed.

Generalized likelihoods are commonly used to obtain consistent estimators with attractive computational and robustness properties. Formally, any generalized likelihood can be used to define a generalized posterior distribution, but an arbitrarily defined "posterior" cannot be expected to appropriately quantify uncertainty in any meaningful sense. In this article, we provide sufficient conditions under which generalized posteriors exhibit concentration, asymptotic normality (Bernstein-von Mises), an asymptotically correct Laplace approximation, and asymptotically correct frequentist coverage. W…
An Accurate Standard Error Estimation for Quadratic Exponential Logistic Regressions by Applying Generalized Estimating Equations to Pseudo-Likelihoods
Maximum pseudo-likelihood (MPL) is a semiparametric estimation method often used to obtain the dependence parameters in copula models from data. It has been shown that despite being consistent, and in some cases efficient, MPL estimation can overestimate the level of dependence especially for small weakly dependent samples. We show that the MPL method uses the expected value of order statistics and we propose to use instead the median or the mode of the same order statistics. In a simulation study we compare the finite-sample performance of the proposed estimators with that of the original MPL…
Misclassification of binary responses, if ignored, may severely bias the maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) of regression parameters. For such data, a binary regression model incorporating misclassification probabilities is extensively used by researchers in different application contexts. The model, however, suffers from a serious estimation problem because of confounding of the unknown misclassification probabilities with the regression parameters. To overcome this problem, in addition to the main sample, use of internal validation data is proposed. However, the maximum likelihood estimator…
We propose the so-called jackknife empirical likelihood approach for the survey data of general unequal probability sampling designs, and analyze parameters defined according to U-statistics. We prove theoretically that jackknife pseudo-empirical likelihood ratio statistic is asymptotically distributed as a chi-square random variable, and can be used to construct confidence intervals for complex survey samples. In the process of research, we consider with or without auxiliary information, utilizing design weights or calibration weights. Simulation studies are included to examine that in terms …
Due to the intractable partition function, the exact likelihood function for a Markov random field (MRF), in many situations, can only be approximated. Major approximation approaches include pseudolikelihood and Laplace approximation. In this paper, we propose a novel way of approximating the likelihood function through first approximating the marginal likelihood functions of individual parameters and then reconstructing the joint likelihood function from these marginal likelihood functions. For approximating the marginal likelihood functions, we derive a particular likelihood function from a …
Robust estimation under multivariate normal (MVN) mixture model is always a computational challenge. A recently proposed maximum pseudo \b{eta}-likelihood estimator aims to estimate the unknown parameters of a MVN mixture model in the spirit of minimum density power divergence (DPD) methodology but with a relatively simpler and tractable computational algorithm even for larger dimensions. In this letter, we will rigorously derive the existence and weak consistency of the maximum pseudo \b{eta}-likelihood estimator in case of MVN mixture models under a reasonable set of assumptions.
The aim of paper is to apply two types of particle swarm optimization, global best andlocal best PSO to a constrained maximum likelihood estimation problem in pseudotime anal-ysis, a sub-field in bioinformatics. The results have shown that particle swarm optimizationis extremely useful and efficient when the optimization problem is non-differentiable and non-convex so that analytical solution can not be derived and gradient-based methods can not beapplied.
The stochastic block model is one of the most studied network models for community detection. It is well-known that most algorithms proposed for fitting the stochastic block model likelihood function cannot scale to large-scale networks. One prominent work that overcomes this computational challenge is Amini et al.(2013), which proposed a fast pseudo-likelihood approach for fitting stochastic block models to large sparse networks. However, this approach does not have convergence guarantee, and is not well suited for small- or medium- scale networks. In this article, we propose a novel likeliho…
Markov networks are popular models for discrete multivariate systems where the dependence structure of the variables is specified by an undirected graph. To allow for more expressive dependence structures, several generalizations of Markov networks have been proposed. Here we consider the class of contextual Markov networks which takes into account possible context-specific independences among pairs of variables. Structure learning of contextual Markov networks is very challenging due to the extremely large number of possible structures. One of the main challenges has been to design a score, b…
Self-training is a simple yet effective method within semi-supervised learning. The idea is to iteratively enhance training data by adding pseudo-labeled data. Its generalization performance heavily depends on the selection of these pseudo-labeled data (PLS). In this paper, we aim at rendering PLS more robust towards the involved modeling assumptions. To this end, we propose to select pseudo-labeled data that maximize a multi-objective utility function. The latter is constructed to account for different sources of uncertainty, three of which we discuss in more detail: model selection, accumula…
Ising models originated in statistical physics and are widely used in modeling spatial data and computer vision problems. However, statistical inference of this model remains challenging due to intractable nature of the normalizing constant in the likelihood. Here, we use a pseudo-likelihood instead to study the Bayesian estimation of two-parameter, inverse temperature, and magnetization, Ising model with a fully specified coupling matrix. We develop a computationally efficient variational Bayes procedure for model estimation. Under the Gaussian mean-field variational family, we derive posteri…
