In this paper we show that the h-p spectral element method developed in \cite{pdstrk1,tomar-01,tomar-dutt-kumar-02} applies to elliptic problems in curvilinear polygons with mixed Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions provided that the Babuska--Brezzi inf--sup conditions are satisfied.
The weak maximum principle of the isoparametric finite element method is proved for the Poisson equation under the Dirichlet boundary condition in a (possibly concave) curvilinear polyhedral domain with edge openings smaller than $π$, which include smooth domains and smooth deformations of convex polyhedra. The proof relies on the analysis of a dual elliptic problem with a discontinuous coefficient matrix arising from the isoparametric finite elements. Therefore, the standard $H^2$ elliptic regularity which is required in the proof of the weak maximum principle in the literature does not hold …
Provably stable flux reconstruction (FR) schemes are derived for partial differential equations cast in curvilinear coordinates. Specifically, energy stable flux reconstruction (ESFR) schemes are considered as they allow for design flexibility as well as stability proofs for the linear advection problem on affine elements. Additionally, split forms are examined as they enable the development of energy stability proofs. The first critical step proves, that in curvilinear coordinates, the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) conservative and non-conservative forms are inherently different--even under exa…

Structure-preserving methods can be derived for the Vlasov-Maxwell system from a discretisation of the Poisson bracket with compatible finite-elements for the fields and a particle representation of the distribution function. These geometric electromagnetic particle-in-cell (GEMPIC) discretisations feature excellent conservation properties and long-time numerical stability. This paper extends the GEMPIC formulation in curvilinear coordinates to realistic boundary conditions. We build a de Rham sequence based on spline functions with clamped boundaries and apply perfect conductor boundary condi…

The Galerkin difference (GD) basis is a set of continuous, piecewise polynomials defined using a finite difference like grid of degrees of freedom. The one dimensional GD basis functions are naturally extended to multiple dimensions using the tensor product constructions to quadrilateral elements for discretizing partial differential equations. Here we propose two approaches to handling complex geometries using the GD basis within a discontinuous Galerkin finite element setting: (1) using non-conforming, curvilinear GD elements and (2) coupling affine GD elements with curvilinear simplicial el…
The entropy conservative, curvilinear, nonconforming, p-refinement algorithm for hyperbolic conservation laws of Del Rey Fernandez et al. (2019), is extended from the compressible Euler equations to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. A simple and flexible coupling procedure with planar interpolation operators between adjoining nonconforming elements is used. Curvilinear volume metric terms are numerically approximated via a minimization procedure and satisfy the discrete geometric conservation law conditions. Distinct curvilinear surface metrics are used on the adjoining interfaces to c…
A considerable amount of attention has been given to discontinuous Galerkin methods for hyperbolic problems in numerical relativity, showing potential advantages of the methods in dealing with hydrodynamical shocks and other discontinuities. This paper investigates discontinuous Galerkin methods for the solution of elliptic problems in numerical relativity. We present a novel hp-adaptive numerical scheme for curvilinear and non-conforming meshes. It uses a multigrid preconditioner with a Chebyshev or Schwarz smoother to create a very scalable discontinuous Galerkin code on generic domains. The…

This paper presents a more stable implementation and a highly accurate numerical tool for predicting flooding in urban areas. We started with the (linearised) well-posedness analysis by [1], where far-field boundary conditions were proposed but extended their analysis to include wall boundaries. Specifically, high-order Summation-by-parts (SBP) finite-difference operators were employed to construct a scheme for the Shallow Water Equations. Subsequently, a stable SBP scheme with Simultaneous Approximation Terms that imposes both far-field and wall boundaries was developed. Finally, we extended …

We consider a least-squares variational kernel-based method for numerical solution of second order elliptic partial differential equations on a multi-dimensional domain. In this setting it is not assumed that the differential operator is self-adjoint or positive definite as it should be in the Rayleigh-Ritz setting. However, the new scheme leads to a symmetric and positive definite algebraic system of equations. Moreover, the resulting method does not rely on certain subspaces satisfying the boundary conditions. The trial space for discretization is provided via standard kernels that reproduce…
We derive a simple criterion that ensures uniqueness, Lipschitz stability and global convergence of Newton's method for the finite dimensional zero-finding problem of a continuously differentiable, pointwise convex and monotonic function. Our criterion merely requires to evaluate the directional derivative of the forward function at finitely many evaluation points and for finitely many directions. We then demonstrate that this result can be used to prove uniqueness, stability and global convergence for an inverse coefficient problem with finitely many measurements. We consider the problem of d…
In this article, we provide stability estimates for the finite element discretization of a class of inverse parameter problems of the form $-\nabla\cdot(μS) = \g f$ in a domain $Ω$ of $\R^d$. Here $μ$ is the unknown parameter to recover, the matrix valued function $S$ and the vector valued distribution $\g f$ are known. As uniqueness is not guaranteed in general for this problem, we prove a Lipschitz-type stability estimate in an hyperplane of $L^2(Ω)$. This stability is obtained through an adaptation of the so-called discrete \emph{inf-sup} constant or LBB constant to a large class of first-o…
