This paper discusses the frequency function of multiple-valued Dirichlet minimizing functions in the special case when the domain and range are both two dimensional. It shows that the frequency function must be of value k/2 for some nonnegative integer k. Futhermore, by looking at the blowing-up functions, we characterize the local behavior of the original Dirichlet minimizing function.
This paper discusses the regularity of multiple-valued Dirichlet minimizing maps into the sphere. It shows that even at branched point, as long as the normalized energy is small enough, we have the energy decay estimate. Combined with the previous work by Chun-Chi Lin, we get our first estimate that m-2 dimensional Hausdorff measure of singular set is zero. Furthermore, by looking at the tangent map and using dimension reduction argument, we show that the singular set is at least of codimension 3.
In this paper, we extend the related notions of Dirichlet quasiminimizer, $ω-$minimizer and almost minimizer to the framework of multiple-valued functions in the sense of Almgren and prove Holder regularity results. We also give examples of those minimizers with various branch sets.
We consider the Hölder continuity for the Dirichlet problem at the boundary. Almgren introduced the multivalued; Q-valued functions for studying regularity of minimal surfaces in higher codimension. The Hölder continuity in the interior for Dirichlet minimizers is an outcome of Almgren's original theory, to which C. De Lellis and E.N. Spadaro's work have given a simpler alternative approach. We extend the Hölder regularity for Dirichlet minimizing Q-valued functions up to the boundary assuming enough regularity of the domain and Hölder regularity of the boundary data with exponent >1/2.
In this paper, our goal is to define a measure valued solution of compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier system for a heat conducting fluid with Dirichlet boundary condition for temperature in a bounded domain. The definition is based on the weak formulation of entropy inequality and ballistic energy inequality. Moreover, we obtain the weak(measure valued)-strong uniqueness property of this solution with the help of relative energy.
We present two new proofs of the exchange theorem for the Laplace transformation of vector-valued distributions. We then derive an explicit solution to the Dirichlet problem of the polyharmonic operator in a half-space. Finally, we obtain explicit solutions to Cauchy-Dirichlet problems of iterated wave- and Klein-Gordon-operators in half-spaces.
We provide new elementary proofs of the following two results: every complex variety is locally the graphs of a Dir-minimizing function, first proved by Almgren; the gradients of Dir-minimizing functions, in principle square-summable, are p-integrable for some p > 2, proved by De Lellis and the author. In the planar case, we prove that our integrability exponents are optimal.
Let $f : U\subset\Rm \to \calQ_Q(\ell_2)$ be of Sobolev class $W^{1,p}$, $1 < p < \infty$. If $f$ almost minimizes its $p$ Dirichlet energy then $f$ is Hölder continuous. If $p=2$ and $f$ is squeeze and squash stationary then $f$ is in VMO.
We consider multivalued maps between $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ open ($N \ge 2$) and a smooth, compact Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{N}$ locally minimizing the Dirichlet energy. An interior partial Hölder regularity result in the spirit of R. Schoen and K. Uhlenbeck is presented. Consequently a minimizer is Hölder continuous outside a set of Hausdorff dimension at most $N-3$. F. Almgren's original theory includes a global interior Hölder continuity result if the minimizers are valued into some $\mathbb{R}^m$. It cannot hold in general if the target is changed into a Riemannian manifold, since it …
In this paper we study the singular set of Dirichlet-minimizing $Q$-valued maps from $\mathbb{R}^m$ into a smooth compact manifold $\mathcal{N}$ without boundary. Similarly to what happens in the case of single valued minimizing harmonic maps, we show that this set is always $(m-3)$-rectifiable with uniform Minkowski bounds. Moreover, as opposed to the single valued case, we prove that the target $\mathcal{N}$ being non-positively curved but not simply connected does not imply continuity of the map.
In this note we prove an abstract version of a recent quantitative stratifcation priciple introduced by Cheeger and Naber (Invent. Math., 191 (2013), no. 2, 321-339; Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 66 (2013), no. 6, 965-990). Using this general regularity result paired with an $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem we provide a new estimate of the Minkowski dimension of the set of higher multiplicity points of a Dir-minimizing Q-valued function. The abstract priciple is applicable to several other problems: we recover recent results in the literature and we obtain also some improvements in more classical co…
In the early 1980's Almgren developed a theory of Dirichlet energy minimizing multi-valued functions, proving that the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set (including branch points) of such a function is at most $(n-2),$ where $n$ is the dimension of its domain. Almgren used this result in an essential way to show that the same upper bound holds for the dimension of the singular set of an area minimizing $n$-dimensional rectifiable current of arbitrary codimension. In either case, the dimension bound is sharp. We develop estimates to study the asymptotic behaviour of a multi-valued Dirichle…
In this paper we establish commmutator estimates for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann Map associated to a divergence form elliptic operator in the upper half-space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+:=\{(x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^n \times (0,\infty)\}$, with uniformly complex elliptic, $L^{\infty}$, $t$-independent coefficients. By a standard pull-back mechanism, these results extend corresponding results of Kenig, Lin and Shen for the Laplacian in a Lipschitz domain, which have application to the theory of homogenization.
We introduce a generalized index for certain meromorphic, unbounded, operator-valued functions. The class of functions is chosen such that energy parameter dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated to uniformly elliptic partial differential operators, particularly, non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators, on bounded Lipschitz domains, and abstract operator-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh $M$-functions and Donoghue-type $M$-functions corresponding to closed extensions of symmetric operators belong to it. The principal purpose of this paper is to prove index formulas that relate the difference of the…
The weak well-posedness results of the strongly damped linear wave equation and of the non linear Westervelt equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions are proved on arbitrary three dimensional domains or any two dimensional domains which can be obtained by a limit of NTA domains caractarized by the same geometrical constants. The two dimensional result is obtained thanks to the Mosco convergence of the functionals corresponding to the weak formulations for the Westervelt equation with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The non homogeneous Dirichlet condition is also tr…
We prove results on complex interpolation of vector-valued Sobolev spaces over the half-line with Dirichlet boundary condition. Motivated by applications in evolution equations, the results are presented for Banach space-valued Sobolev spaces with a power weight. The proof is based on recent results on pointwise multipliers in Bessel potential spaces, for which we present a new and simpler proof as well. We apply the results to characterize the fractional domain spaces of the first derivative operator on the half line.
In this paper we continue to study the connection among the area minimizing problem, certain area functional and the Dirichlet problem of minimal surface equations in a class of conformal cones with a similar motivation from \cite{GZ20}. These cones are certain generalizations of hyperbolic spaces. We describe the structure of area minimizing $n$-nteger multiplicity currents in bounded $C^2$ conformal cones with prescribed $C^1$ graphical boundary via a minimizing problem of these area functionals. As an application we solve the corresponding Dirichlet problem of minimal surface equations unde…
In the 1980's, Almgren developed a theory of multi-valued Dirichlet energy minimizing functions on $n$ dimensional domains and used it, in an essential way, to bound the Hausdorff dimension of the singular sets of area minimizing rectifiable currents of dimension $n$ and codimension $\geq 2$. Recent work of the second author shows that two-valued $C^{1, μ}$ harmonic functions on $n$ dimensional domains, which are typically-non-minimizing stationary points of Dirichlet energy, play an essential role in the study of multiplicity 2 branch points of stable codimension 1 rectifiable currents of dim…
In this paper, we consider multi-valued graphs with a prescribed real analytic interface that minimize the Dirichlet energy. Such objects arise as a linearized model of area minimizing currents with real analytic boundaries and our main result is that their singular set is discrete in 2 dimensions. This confirms (and provides a first step to) a conjecture by B. White \cite{White97} that area minimizing $2$-dimensional currents with real analytic boundaries have a finite number of singularities. We also show that, in any dimension, Dirichlet energy-minimizers with a $C^1$ boundary interface are…
Consider the elliptic operator \[ A = - \sum_{k,l=1}^d \partial_k \, c_{kl} \, \partial_l + \sum_{k=1}^d a_k \, \partial_k - \sum_{k=1}^d \partial_k \, b_k + a_0 \] on a bounded connected open set $Ω\subset {\bf R}^d$ with Lipschitz boundary conditions, where $c_{kl} \in L_\infty(Ω,{\bf R})$ and $a_k,b_k,a_0 \in L_\infty(Ω,{\bf C})$, subject to Robin boundary conditions $\partial_νu + β\, {\rm Tr}\, u = 0$, where $β\in L_\infty(\partial Ω, {\bf C})$ is complex valued. Then we show that the kernel of the semigroup generated by $-A$ satisfies Gaussian estimates and Hölder Gaussian estimates. If …
In this article, first we give a general lemma on the existence of regular homeomorphic solutions $f$ with the hydrodynamic normalization $f(z)=z+o(1)$ as $z\to\infty$ to the degenerate Beltrami equations $\overline{\partial}f=μ\,\partial f$ in $\mathbb C$ whose complex coefficients $μ$ have compact supports. On this basis, we establish criteria for existence and representation of regular discrete open solutions for the Dirichlet problem with continuous data to degenerate Beltrami equations in arbitrary simply connected bounded domains $D$ in $\mathbb C$. Moreover, we obtain similar criteria f…
In his big regularity paper, Almgren has proven the regularity theorem for mass-minimizing integral currents. One key step in his paper is to derive the regularity of Dirichlet-minimizing $\mathbf{Q}_{Q}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$-valued functions in the Sobolev space $\mathcal{Y}_{2}(Ω, \mathbf{Q}_{Q} (\mathbb{R}^{n}))$, where the domain $Ω$ is open in $\mathbb{R}^{m}$. In this article, we introduce the class of weakly stationary-harmonic $\mathbf{Q}_{Q} (\mathbb{R}^n)$-valued functions. These functions are the critical points of Dirichlet integral under smooth domain-variations and range-variations. W…
In this note we revisit Almgren's theory of Q-valued functions, that are functions taking values in the space of unordered Q-tuples of points in R^n. In particular: 1) we give shorter versions of Almgren's proofs of the existence of Dir-minimizing Q-valued functions, of their Hoelder regularity and of the dimension estimate of their singular set; 2) we propose an alternative intrinsic approach to these results, not relying on Almgren's biLipschitz embedding; 3) we improve upon the estimate of the singular set of planar Dir-minimizing functions by showing that it consists of isolated points.
In this article we prove that the singular set of Dirichlet-minimizing $Q$-valued functions is countably $(m-2)$-rectifiable and we give upper bounds for the $(m-2)$-dimensional Minkowski content of the set of singular points with multiplicity $Q$.
We establish a new theory of regularity for elliptic complex valued second order equations of the form $\mathcal L=$div$A(\nabla\cdot)$, when the coefficients of the matrix $A$ satisfy a natural algebraic condition, a strengthened version of a condition known in the literature as $L^p$-dissipativity. Precisely, the regularity result is a reverse Hölder condition for $L^p$ averages of solutions on interior balls, and serves as a replacement for the De Giorgi - Nash - Moser regularity of solutions to real-valued divergence form elliptic operators. In a series of papers, Cialdea and Maz'ya studie…
The present paper establishes a certain duality between the Dirichlet and Regularity problems for elliptic operators with $t$-independent complex bounded measurable coefficients ($t$ being the transversal direction to the boundary). To be precise, we show that the Dirichlet boundary value problem is solvable in $L^{p'}$, subject to the square function and non-tangential maximal function estimates, if and only if the corresponding Regularity problem is solvable in $L^p$. Moreover, the solutions admit layer potential representations. In particular, we prove that for any elliptic operator with $t…
We prove an existence result for a class of Dirichlet boundary value problems with discontinuous nonlinearity and involving a Leray-Lions operator. The proof combines monotonicity methods for elliptic problems, variational inequality techniques and basic tools related to monotone operators.
In the present paper, we consider a non self adjoint hyperbolic operator with a vector field and an electric potential that depend not only on the space variable but also on the time variable. More precisely, we attempt to stably and simultaneously retrieve the real valued velocity field and the real valued potential from the knowledge of Neumann measurements performed on the whole boundary of the domain. We establish in dimension n greater than two, stability estimates for the problem under consideration. Thereafter, by enlarging the set of data we show that the unknown terms can be stably re…
We discuss the Dirichlet problem of the quasi-linear elliptic system \begin{eqnarray*} -e^{-f(U)}div(e^{f(U)}\bigtriangledown U)+&{1/2}f'(U)|\bigtriangledown U|^2&=0, {in $Ω$}, & U|_{\partialΩ}&=ϕ. \end{eqnarray*} Here $Ω$ a smooth bounded domain in $R^n$, $f: R^N\to R$ is a smooth function, $U:Ω\to R^N$ is the unknown vector-valued function, $ϕ:\barΩ\to R^N$ is a given vector-valued $C^2$ function, $f'$ is the gradient of the function $f$ with respect to the variable $U$. Such problems arise in population dynamics and Differential Geometry. The difficulty of studying this problem is that this…
We establish a theory of $Q$-valued functions minimizing a suitable generalization of the Dirichlet integral. In a second paper the theory will be used to approximate efficiently area minimizing currents $\mathrm{mod}(p)$ when $p=2Q$, and to establish a first general partial regularity theorem for every $p$ in any dimension and codimension.
In this paper we look for the domains minimizing the h-th eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian $λ$ h with a constraint on the diameter. Existence of an optimal domain is easily obtained, and is attained at a constant width body. In the case of a simple eigenvalue, we provide non standard (i.e., non local) optimality conditions. Then we address the question whether or not the disk is an optimal domain in the plane, and we give the precise list of the 17 eigenvalues for which the disk is a local minimum. We conclude by some numerical simulations showing the 20 first optimal domains in the plane…
We propose a definition of the Dirichlet energy (which is roughly speaking the integral of the square of the gradient) for mappings mu : Omega -> (P(D), W\_2) defined over a subset Omega of R^p and valued in the space P(D) of probability measures on a compact convex subset D of R^q endowed with the quadratic Wasserstein distance. Our definition relies on a straightforward generalization of the Benamou-Brenier formula (already introduced by Brenier) but is also equivalent to the definition of Koorevaar, Schoen and Jost as limit of approximate Dirichlet energies, and to the definition of Reshetn…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded open subset with $C^{1+κ}$-boundary for some $κ> 0$. Consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated to the elliptic operator $- \sum \partial_l ( c_{kl} \, \partial_k ) + V$, where the $c_{kl} = c_{lk}$ are Hölder continuous and $V \in L_\infty(Ω)$ are real valued. We prove that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator generates a $C_0$-semigroup on the space $C(\partial Ω)$ which is in addition holomorphic with angle $\fracπ{2}$. We also show that the kernel of the semigroup has Poisson bounds on the complex right half-plane. As a consequence we obtain an optimal holomorp…
The spectral shift function of a pair of self-adjoint operators is expressed via an abstract operator valued Titchmarsh--Weyl $m$-function. This general result is applied to different self-adjoint realizations of second-order elliptic partial differential operators on smooth domains with compact boundaries, Schrödinger operators with compactly supported potentials, and finally, Schrödinger operators with singular potentials supported on hypersurfaces. In these applications the spectral shift function is determined in an explicit form with the help of (energy parameter dependent) Dirichlet-to-N…
We analyze a notion of multiple valued sections of a vector bundle over an abstract smooth Riemannian manifold, which was suggested by W. Allard in the unpublished note "Some useful techniques for dealing with multiple valued functions" and generalizes Almgren's $Q$-valued functions. We study some relevant properties of such $Q$-multisections and apply the theory to provide an elementary and purely geometric proof of a delicate reparametrization theorem for multi-valued graphs which plays an important role in the regularity theory for higher codimension area minimizing currents à la Almgren-De…
The present paper commences the study of higher order differential equations in composition form. Specifically, we consider the equation Lu=\Div B^*\nabla(a\Div A\nabla u)=0, where A and B are elliptic matrices with complex-valued bounded measurable coefficients and a is an accretive function. Elliptic operators of this type naturally arise, for instance, via a pull-back of the bilaplacian Δ^2 from a Lipschitz domain to the upper half-space. More generally, this form is preserved under a Lipschitz change of variables, contrary to the case of divergence-form fourth order differential equations.…
We study the geometry of domains in complete metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure supporting a $1$-Poincaré inequality. We propose a notion of \emph{domain with boundary of positive mean curvature} and prove that, for such domains, there is always a solution to the Dirichlet problem for least gradients with continuous boundary data. Here \emph{least gradient} is defined as minimizing total variation (in the sense of BV functions) and boundary conditions are satisfied in the sense that the \emph{boundary trace} of the solution exists and agrees with the given boundary data. Th…
We consider $\mathbb{S}^2$-valued maps on a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ minimizing a perturbation of the Dirichlet energy with vertical penalization in $Ω$ and horizontal penalization on $\partialΩ$. We first show the global minimality of universal constant configurations in a specific range of the physical parameters using a Poincaré-type inequality. Then, we prove that any energy minimizer takes its values into a fixed meridian of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, and deduce uniqueness of minimizers up to the action of the appropriate symmetry group. We also prove a comparison principle for minim…
We present examples of holomorphic functions that vanish to in- finite order at points at the boundary of their domain of definition. They give rise to examples of Dirichlet minimizing Q-valued functions indicating that "higher"-regularity boundary results are difficult. Furthermore we dis- cuss some implication to branching and vanishing phenomena in the context of minimal surfaces, Q-valued functions and unique continuation.
We construct Lipschitz $Q$-valued functions which approximate carefully integral currents when their cylindrical excess is small and they are almost minimizing in a suitable sense. This result is used in two subsequent works to prove the discreteness of the singular set for the following three classes of $2$-dimensional integral currents: area minimizing in Riemannian manifolds, semicalibrated and spherical cross sections of $3$-dimensional area minimizing cones.
