We show that the natural "convolution" on the space of smooth, even, translation-invariant convex valuations on a euclidean space $V$, obtained by intertwining the product and the duality transform of S. Alesker, may be expressed in terms of Minkowski sum. Furthermore the resulting product extends naturally to odd valuations as well. Based on this technical result we give an application to integral geometry, generalizing Hadwiger's additive kinematic formula for $SO(V)$ to general compact groups $G \subset O(V)$ acting transitively on the sphere: it turns out that these formulas are in a natural sense dual to the usual (intersection) kinematic formulas.
We introduce the new notion of convolution of a (smooth or generalized) valuation on a group $G$ and a valuation on a manifold $M$ acted upon by the group. In the case of a transitive group action, we prove that the spaces of smooth and generalized valuations on $M$ are modules over the algebra of compactly supported generalized valuations on $G$ satisfying some technical condition of tameness. The case of a vector space acting on itself is studied in detail. We prove explicit formulas in this case and show that the new convolution is an extension of the convolution on smooth translation invar…
We give an explicit classification of translation-invariant, Lorentz-invariant continuous valuations on convex sets. We also classify the Lorentz-invariant even generalized valuations.
We study the space of generalized translation invariant valuations on a finite-dimensional vector space and construct a partial convolution which extends the convolution of smooth translation invariant valuations. Our main theorem is that McMullen's polytope algebra is a subalgebra of the (partial) convolution algebra of generalized translation invariant valuations. More precisely, we show that the polytope algebra embeds injectively into the space of generalized translation invariant valuations and that for polytopes in general position, the convolution is defined and corresponds to the produ…
In this paper, we endow the space of continuous translation invariant valuation on convex sets generated by mixed volumes coupled with a suitable Radon measure on tuples of convex bodies with two appropriate norms. This enables us to construct a continuous extension of the convolution operator on smooth valuations to non-smooth valuations, which are in the completion of the spaces of valuations with respect to these norms. The novelty of our approach lies in the fact that our proof does not rely on the general theory of wave fronts, but on geometric inequalities deduced from optimal transport …
The spaces of Sp(n)-, Sp(n)U(1)- and Sp(n)Sp(1)- invariant, translation invariant, continuous convex valuations on the quaternionic vector space H^n are studied. Combinatorial dimension formulas involving Young diagrams and Schur polynomials are proved.
The Alesker-Bernig-Schuster theorem asserts that each irreducible representation of the special orthogonal group appears with multiplicity at most one as a subrepresentation of the space of continuous translation-invariant valuations with fixed degree of homogeneity. Moreover, the theorem describes in terms of highest weights which irreducible representations appear with multiplicity one. In this paper, we present a refinement of this result, namely the explicit construction of a highest weight vector in each irreducible subrepresentation. We then describe how important natural operations on v…
The decomposition of the space of continuous and translation invariant valuations into a sum of SO(n) irreducible subspaces is obtained. A reformulation of this result in terms of a Hadwiger type theorem for continuous translation invariant and SO(n)-equivariant tensor valuations is also given. As an application, symmetry properties of rigid motion invariant and homogeneous bivaluations are established and then used to prove new inequalities of Brunn-Minkowski type for convex body valued valuations.
We obtain new general results on the structure of the space of translation invariant continuous valuations on convex sets (a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem). Using these and our previous results we obtain explicit characterization of unitarily invariant translation invariant continuous valuations. It implies new integral geometric formulas for real submanifolds in Hermitian spaces generalizing the classical kinematic formulas in Euclidean spaces due to Poincaré, Chern, Santaló, and others.
We study the properties of the multiplicative structure on valuations on convex sets. We prove a new version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for even translation invariant continuous valuations, and discuss related problems of integral geometry. Then we formulate a conjectural analogue of this result for odd valuations.
We prove new kinematic formulas for tensor valuations and simplify previously known Crofton formulas by using the recently developed algebraic theory of translation invariant valuations. The heart of the paper is the computation of the Alesker-Fourier transform on the large class of spherical valuations, which is achieved by differential-geometric and representation theoretical tools. We also describe in explicit form the product and convolution of tensor valuations.
An overview of some of the recent developments in the theory of valuations on convex sets and its generalizations to manifolds is given. The exposition is focused towards applications to integral geometry; several of such applications are discussed.
The hermitian analog of Aleksandrov's area measures of convex bodies is investigated. A characterization of those area measures which arise as the first variation of unitarily invariant valuations is established. General smooth area measures are shown to form a module over smooth valuations and the module of unitarily invariant area measures is described explicitly.
A version of the Hodge-Riemann relations for valuations was recently conjectured and proved in several special cases by the first-named author. The Lefschetz operator considered there arises as either the product or the convolution with the mixed volume of several Euclidean balls. Here we prove that in (co-)degree one the Hodge-Riemann relations persist if the balls are replaced by several different (centrally symmetric) convex bodies with smooth boundary with positive Gauss curvature. While these mixed Hodge-Riemann relations for the convolution directly imply the Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequali…
Valuations constitute a class of functionals on convex bodies which include the Euler-characteristic, the surface area, the Lebesgue-measure, and many more classical functionals. Curvature measures may be regarded as "localised`` versions of valuations which yield local information about the geometry of a body's boundary. A complete classification of continuous translation-invariant $\mathrm{SO}(n)$-invariant valuations and curvature measures with values in $\mathbb{R}$ was obtained by Hadwiger and Schneider, respectively. More recently, characterisation results have been achieved for curvatur…
The projection body operator Π, which associates with every convex body in Euclidean space Rn its projection body, is a continuous valuation, it is invariant under translations and equivariant under rotations. It is also well known that Π maps the set of polytopes in Rn into itself. We show that Π is the only non-trivial operator with these properties.
We give in explicit form the principal kinematic formula for the action of the affine unitary group on $\C^n$, together with a straightforward algebraic method for computing the full array of unitary kinematic formulas, expressed in terms of certain convex valuations introduced, essentially, by H. Tasaki. We introduce also several other canonical bases for the algebra of unitary-invariant valuations, explore their interrelations, and characterize in these terms the cones of positive and monotone elements.
We show how an operation of inf-convolution can be used to approximate convex functions with $C^{1}$ smooth convex functions on Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive curvature (in a manner that not only is explicit but also preserves some other properties of the original functions, such as ordering, symmetries, infima and sets of minimizers), and we give some applications.
Rotation intertwining maps from the set of convex bodies in Rn into itself that are continuous linear operators with respect to Minkowski and Blaschke addition are investigated. The main focus is on Blaschke-Minkowski homomorphisms. We show that such maps are represented by a spherical convolution operator. An application of this representation is a complete classification of all even Blaschke-Minkowski homomorphisms which shows that these maps behave in many respects similar to the well known projection body operator. Among further applications is the following result: If an even Blaschke-Min…
