Self-coincidences in higher codimensions

When can a map between manifolds be deformed away from itself? We describe a (normal bordism) obstruction which is often computable and in general much stronger than the classical primary obstruction in cohomology. In particular, it answers our question completely in a large dimension range. As an illustration we give explicit criteria in three sample settings: projections from Stiefel manifolds to Grassmannians, sphere bundle projections and maps defined on spheres. Nielsen coincidence theory in arbitrary codimensions

Given two maps f_1, f_2 : M^m \longrightarrow N^n between manifolds of the indicated arbitrary dimensions, when can they be deformed away from one another? More generally: what is the minimum number MCC (f_1, f_2) of pathcomponents of the coincidence space of maps f'_1, f'_2 where f'_i is homotopic to f_i, i = 1, 2? Minimizing coincidence numbers of maps into projective spaces

In this paper we continue to study (`strong') Nielsen coincidence numbers (which were introduced recently for pairs of maps between manifolds of arbitrary dimensions) and the corresponding minimum numbers of coincidence points and pathcomponents. We explore compatibilities with fibrations and, more specifically, with covering maps, paying special attention to selfcoincidence questions. Suppose X,Y are manifolds, f,g:X->Y are maps. The well-known Coincidence Problem studies the coincidence set C={x:f(x)=g(x)}. The number m=dimX-dimY is called the codimension of the problem. More general is the Preimage Problem. For a map f:X->Z and a submanifold Y of Z, it studies the preimage set C={x:f(x) in Y}, and the codimension is m=dimX+dimY-dimZ. Roots of maps between spheres and projective spaces in codimension one

For maps from $S^3$ and $\RP^3$ into $S^2$ and $\RP^2$, we study the problem of minimizing the root set by deforming the maps through homotopies. After presenting the classification of the homotopy classes of such maps, we prove that the minimal root set for a non null-homotopic map is either a circle or the disjoint union of two circle, according its range is $S^2$ or $\RP^2$, respectively.

Nielsen equalizer theory

We extend the Nielsen theory of coincidence sets to equalizer sets, the points where a given set of (more than 2) mappings agree. On manifolds, this theory is interesting only for maps between spaces of different dimension, and our results hold for sets of k maps on compact manifolds from dimension (k-1)n to dimension n. We define the Nielsen equalizer number, which is a lower bound for the minimal number of equalizer points when the maps are changed by homotopies, and is in fact equal to this minimal number when the domain manifold is not a surface. Minimum numbers and Wecken theorems in topological coincidence theory. I

Minimum numbers measure the obstruction to removing coincidences of two given maps (between smooth manifolds M and N of dimensions m and n, resp.). In this paper we compare them to four distinct types of Nielsen numbers.
