We investigate the structure of the Minkowski sum of standard simplices in ${\reals}^r$. In particular, we investigate the one-dimensional structure, the vertices, their degrees and the edges in the Minkowski sum polytope.
For a polytope we define the {\em flag polynomial}, a polynomial in commuting variables related to the well-known flag vector and describe how to express the the flag polynomial of the Minkowski sum of $k$ standard simplices in a direct and canonical way in terms of the {\em $k$-th master polytope} $P(k)$ where $k\in\nats$. The flag polynomial facilitates many direct computations. To demonstrate this we provide two examples; we first derive a formula for the $f$-polynomial and the maximum number of $d$-dimensional faces of the Minkowski sum of two simplices. We then compute the maximum discrep…
In this paper, we discuss the toric ideals of Minkowski sums of unit simplices. More precisely, we prove that the toric ideal of Minkowski sum of unit simplices has a squarefree initial ideal and is generated by quadratic binomials. Moreover, we also prove that Minkowski sums of unit simplices have the integer decomposition property. Those results are a partial contribution to Oda conjecture and Bøgvad conjecture.
This note provides a Lefschetz theorem for Minkowski sums of polytopes, and conclude lower bound theorems for Minkowski sums of polytopes. It is written as an appendix to arXiv:1405.7368, so notation and references follow that paper.
This paper offers a geometrical realisation of simple permutoassociahedra, which has significant importance serving as a topological proof of Mac Lane's coherence. We introduce a family of $n$-polytopes, $PA_{n,c}$, obtained by Minkowski sums such that each summand yields to the appropriate facet of the resulting sum. Additionally, it leads to the correlation between Minkowski sums and truncations of permutohedron, which implicitly gives a general procedure for geometrical Minkowski-construction of any permutonestohedron.
Minkowski sums of simplices in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$ form an interesting class of polytopes that seem to emerge in various situations. In this paper we discuss the Minkowski sum of the simplices $Δ_{k-1}$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$ where $k$ and $n$ are fixed, their flags and some of their face lattice structure. In particular, we derive a closed formula for their {\em exponential generating flag function}. These polytopes are simple, include both the simplex $Δ_{n-1}$ and the permutahedron $Π_{n-1}$, and form a Minkowski basis for more general permutahedra.
The objective of this paper is to study a special family of Minkowski sums, that is of polytopes relatively in general position. We show that the maximum number of faces in the sum can be attained by this family. We present a new linear equation that is satisfied by f-vectors of the sum and the summands. We study some of the implications of this equation.
The objective of this paper is to present two types of results on Minkowski sums of convex polytopes. The first is about a special class of polytopes we call perfectly centered and the combinatorial properties of the Minkowski sum with their own dual. In particular, we have a characterization of face lattice of the sum in terms of the face lattice of a given perfectly centered polytope. Exact face counting formulas are then obtained for perfectly centered simplices and hypercubes. The second type of results concerns tight upper bounds for the f-vectors of Minkowski sums of several polytopes.
In this paper, we will describe the space spanned by the angle-sums of polytopes, recorded in the alpha-vector. We will consider the angles sums of simplices and the angles sums and face numbers of simplicial polytopes and general polytopes. We will construct families of polytopes whose angle sums span the spaces of polytopes defined by the Gram and Perles equations, analogues of the Euler and Dehn-Sommerville equations. We show that the dimensions of the affine span of the space of angle sums of simplices is floor[(d-1)/2] + 1, and that of the angle sums and face numbers of simplicial polytop…
In this paper, we consider the normality or the integer decomposition property (IDP, for short) for Minkowski sums of integral convex polytopes. We discuss some properties on the toric rings associated with Minkowski sums of integral convex polytopes. We also study Minkowski sums of edge polytopes and give a sufficient condition for Minkowski sums of edge polytopes to have IDP.
The colorful simplicial depth of a collection of d+1 finite sets of points in Euclidean d-space is the number of choices of a point from each set such that the origin is contained in their convex hull. We use methods from combinatorial topology to prove a tight upper bound on the colorful simplicial depth. This implies a conjecture of Deza et al. (2006). Furthermore, we introduce colorful Gale transforms as a bridge between colorful configurations and Minkowski sums. Our colorful upper bound then yields a tight upper bound on the number of totally mixed facets of certain Minkowski sums of simp…
We investigate how the Minkowski sum of two polytopes affects their graph and, in particular, their diameter. We show that the diameter of the Minkowski sum is bounded below by the diameter of each summand and above by, roughly, the product between the diameter of one summand and the number of vertices of the other. We also prove that both bounds are sharp. In addition, we obtain a result on polytope decomposability. More precisely, given two polytopes P and Q, we show that P can be written as a Minkowski sum with a summand homothetic to Q if and only if P has the same number of vertices as it…
We show that there exist convex $n$-gons $P$ and $Q$ such that the largest convex polygon in the Minkowski sum $P+Q$ has size $Θ(n\log n)$. This matches an upper bound of Tiwary.
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes are classical objects in algebraic combinatorics arising in the representation theory of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The integer point transform of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ)$ projects to the Schur function $s_λ$. Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring of symmetric functions; they are also special cases of Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ corresponding to Grassmannian permutations. For any permutation $w \in S_n$ with column-convex Rothe diagram, we construct a polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ whose integer point transform project…
We analyze marked poset polytopes and generalize a result due to Hibi and Li, answering whether the marked chain polytope is unimodular equivalent to the marked order polytope. Both polytopes appear naturally in the representation theory of semi-simple Lie algebras, and hence we can give a necessary and sufficient condition on the marked poset such that the associated toric degenerations of the corresponding partial flag variety are isomorphic. We further show that the set of lattice points in such a marked poset polytope is the Minkowski sum of sets of lattice points for 0-1 polytopes. Moreov…
In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reis…
We show that for polytopes P_1, P_2, ..., P_r \subset \R^d, each having n_i \ge d+1 vertices, the Minkowski sum P_1 + P_2 + ... + P_r cannot achieve the maximum of \prod_i n_i vertices if r \ge d. This complements a recent result of Fukuda & Weibel (2006), who show that this is possible for up to d-1 summands. The result is obtained by combining methods from discrete geometry (Gale transforms) and topological combinatorics (van Kampen--type obstructions) as developed in Rörig, Sanyal, and Ziegler (2007).
Fakhruddin has proved that for two lattice polygons P and Q any lattice point in their Minkowski sum can be written as a sum of a lattice point in P and one in Q, provided P is smooth and the normal fan of P is a subdivision of the normal fan of Q. We give a shorter combinatorial proof of this fact that does not need the smoothness assumption on P.
If $P$ is a lattice polytope (that is, the convex hull of a finite set of lattice points in $\mathbf{R}^n$), then every sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$ is a lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$. However, a lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$ is not necessarily the sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$. It is proved that if the polytope $P$ is a union of unimodular simplices, then every lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$ is the sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$.

We present results on the number of linear regions of the functions that can be represented by artificial feedforward neural networks with maxout units. A rank-k maxout unit is a function computing the maximum of $k$ linear functions. For networks with a single layer of maxout units, the linear regions correspond to the upper vertices of a Minkowski sum of polytopes. We obtain face counting formulas in terms of the intersection posets of tropical hypersurfaces or the number of upper faces of partial Minkowski sums, along with explicit sharp upper bounds for the number of regions for any input …
We derive tight expressions for the maximum number of $k$-faces, $0\le{}k\le{}d-1$, of the Minkowski sum, $P_1+...+P_r$, of $r$ convex $d$-polytopes $P_1,...,P_r$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $d\ge{}2$ and $r<d$, as a (recursively defined) function on the number of vertices of the polytopes. Our results coincide with those recently proved by Adiprasito and Sanyal [2]. In contrast to Adiprasito and Sanyal's approach, which uses tools from Combinatorial Commutative Algebra, our approach is purely geometric and uses basic notions such as $f$- and $h$-vector calculus and shellings, and generalizes the…
Let $E_d(n)$ be the maximum number of pairs that can be selected from a set of $n$ points in $R^d$ such that the midpoints of these pairs are convexly independent. We show that $E_2(n)\geq Ω(n\sqrt{\log n})$, which answers a question of Eisenbrand, Pach, Rothvoß, and Sopher (2008) on large convexly independent subsets in Minkowski sums of finite planar sets, as well as a question of Halman, Onn, and Rothblum (2007). We also show that $\lfloor\frac{1}{3}n^2\rfloor\leq E_3(n)\leq \frac{3}{8}n^2+O(n^{3/2})$. Let $W_d(n)$ be the maximum number of pairwise nonparallel unit distance pairs in a set o…
This paper was submitted to the Oberwolfach Conference "Combinatorial Convexity and Algebraic Geometry", October 1997. Let $M={\mathbb Z}^r$. For convex lattice polytopes $P,P'$ in ${\mathbb R}^r$, when is $(M \cap P)+ (M \cap P') = M \cap (P + P')$? Without any additional condition, the equality obviously does not hold. When the pair $(M,P)$ corresponds to a complex projective toric variety $X$ and an ample divisor $D$ on $X$, it is reasonable to assume that $P'$ corresponds to an ample (or, more generally, a nef) divisor $D'$ on the same $X$. Then the question correspons to the surjectivity …
The Minkowski sum of two subsets $A$ and $B$ of a finite abelian group $G$ is defined as all pairwise sums of elements of $A$ and $B$: $A + B = \{ a + b : a \in A, b \in B \}$. The largest size of a $(k, \ell)$-sum-free set in $G$ has been of interest for many years and in the case $G = \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ has recently been computed by Bajnok and Matzke. Motivated by sum-free sets of the torus, Kravitz introduces the noisy Minkowski sum of two sets, which can be thought of as discrete evaluations of these continuous sumsets. That is, given a noise set $C$, the noisy Minkowski sum is define…
Lattice polytopes which possess the integer decomposition property (IDP for short) turn up in many fields of mathematics. It is known that if the Cayley sum of lattice polytopes possesses IDP, then so does their Minkowski sum. In this paper, the Cayley sum of the order polytope of a finite poset and the stable set polytope of a finite simple graph is studied. We show that the Cayley sum of an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a perfect graph possesses a regular unimodular triangulation and IDP, and hence so does their Minkowski sum. Moreover, it turns out that, for an order polytop…
We extend work of Davis and Januszkiewicz by considering {\it omnioriented} toric manifolds, whose canonical codimension-2 submanifolds are independently oriented. We show that each omniorientation induces a canonical stably complex structure, which is respected by the torus action and so defines an element of an equivariant cobordism ring. As an application, we compute the complex bordism groups and cobordism ring of an arbitrary omnioriented toric manifold. We consider a family of examples $B_{i,j}$, which are toric manifolds over products of simplices, and verify that their natural stably c…
Given a non-negative mxn matrix W=(w_ij) and positive integer vectors R=(r_1, >..., r_m) and C=(c_1, ..., c_n), we consider the total weight T(R, C; W) of mxn non-negative integer matrices (contingency tables) D with the row sums r_i, the column sums c_j, and the weight of D=(d_ij) equal to product of w_ij^d_ij. In particular, if W is a 0-1 matrix, T(R, C; W) is the number of integer feasible flows in a bipartite network. We prove a version of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality relating the numbers T(R, C; W) and T(R_k, C_k; W), where (R, C) is a convex combination of (R_k, C_k) for k=1, ..., p.
This is a survey of the recent progress and open questions on the structure of the sets of 0-1 and non-negative integer matrices with prescribed row and column sums. We discuss cardinality estimates, the structure of a random matrix from the set, discrete versions of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality and the statistical dependence between row and column sums.
For a polytope P a simplex S with vertex set V(S) is called a special simplex if every facet of P contains all but exactly one vertex of S. For such polytopes P with face complex F(P) containing a special simplex the subcomplex F(P) / V(S) of all faces not containing vertices of S is the boundary of a polytope Q - the basis polytope of P. If additionally the dimension of the affine basis space of F(P) / V(S) equals dim(Q), we call P meek; otherwise we call P wild. We give a full combinatorial classification and techniques for geometric construction of the class of meek polytopes with special s…
A 0/1-simplex is the convex hull of n+1 affinely independent vertices of the unit n-cube I^n. It is nonobtuse if none its dihedral angles is obtuse, and acute if additionally none of them is right. Acute 0/1-simplices in I^n can be represented by 0/1-matrices P of size n x n whose Gramians have an inverse that is strictly diagonally dominant, with negative off-diagonal entries. In this paper, we will prove that the positive part D of the transposed inverse of P is doubly stochastic and has the same support as P. The negated negative part C of P^-T is strictly row-substochastic and its support …
There are several works \cite{De} (and \cite{St}), \cite{En}, \cite{Co} and \cite{Va} enumerating four-dimensional parallelotopes. In this work we give a new enumeration showing that any four-dimensional parallelotope is either a zonotope or the Minkowski sum of a zonotope with the regular 24-cell $\{3,4,3\}$. Each zonotopal parallelotope is the Minkowski sum of segments whose generating vectors form a unimodular system. There are exactly 17 four-dimensional unimodular systems. Hence, there are 17 four-dimensional zonotopal parallelotopes. Other 35 four-dimensional parallelotopes are: the regu…
We express the matroid polytope $P_M$ of a matroid $M$ as a signed Minkowski sum of simplices, and obtain a formula for the volume of $P_M$. This gives a combinatorial expression for the degree of an arbitrary torus orbit closure in the Grassmannian $Gr_{k,n}$. We then derive analogous results for the independent set polytope and the associated flag matroid polytope of $M$. Our proofs are based on a natural extension of Postnikov's theory of generalized permutohedra.
Consider a set of $r$ convex $d$-polytopes $P_1,P_2,...,P_r$, where $d\ge{}3$ and $r\ge{}2$, and let $n_i$ be the number of vertices of $P_i$, $1\le{}i\le{}r$. It has been shown by Fukuda and Weibel that the number of $k$-faces of the Minkowski sum, $P_1+P_2+...+P_r$, is bounded from above by $Φ_{k+r}(n_1,n_2,...,n_r)$, where $Φ_{\ell}(n_1,n_2,...,n_r)= \sum_{\substack{1\le{}s_i\le{}n_i s_1+...+s_r=\ell}} \prod_{i=1}^r\binom{n_i}{s_i}$, $\ell\ge{}r$. Fukuda and Weibel have also shown that the upper bound mentioned above is tight for $d\ge{}4$, $2\le{}r\le{}\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor$, and for a…
We say that a family ${x_i|i\in[m]}$ of vectors in a Banach space $X$ satisfies the $k$-collapsing condition if $|\sum_{i\in I}x_i|\leq 1$ for all $k$-element subsets $I\subseteq{1,2,...,m}$. Let $C(k,d)$ denote the maximum cardinality of a $k$-collapsing family of unit vectors in a $d$\dimensional Banach space, where the maximum is taken over all spaces of dimension $d$. Similarly, let $CB(k,d)$ denote the maximum cardinality if we require in addition that $\sum_{i=1}^m x_i=o$. The case $k=2$ was considered by Füredi, Lagarias and Morgan (1991). These conditions originate in a theorem of Lawl…
