In Chapter 1 we give the basic background and notations. We also give a new characterization of the Conrad property for orderings. In Chapter 2, we use the new characterization of the Conradian property to give a classification of groups admitting (only) finitely many Conradian orderings §2.1. ${\rm Spin}(7)$ is unacceptable

We classify the pairs of group morphisms $Γ\rightarrow {\rm Spin}(7)$ which are element conjugate but not globally conjugate. As an application, we study the case where $Γ$ is the Weil group of a $p$-adic local field, which is relevant to the recent approach to the local Langlands correspondence for ${\rm G}_2$ and ${\rm PGSp}_6$ by Gan and Savin. As a second application, we improve some result of Kret and Shin about ${\rm GSpin}_7$-valued Galois representations.

A new characterization of Conrad's property for group orderings, with applications

We provide a pure algebraic version of the dynamical characterization of Conrad's property. This approach allows dealing with general group actions on totally ordered spaces. As an application, we give a new and somehow constructive proof of a theorem first established by Linnell: an orderable group having infinitely many orderings has uncountably many. This proof is achieved by extending to uncountable orderable groups a result about orderings which may be approximated by their conjugates. Classification of finite W-groups

We determine the structure of the W-group $\mathcal{G}_F$, the small Galois quotient of the absolute Galois group $G_F$ of the Pythagorean formally real field $F$ when the space of orderings $X_F$ has finite order. Based on Marshall's work (1979), we reduce the structure of $\mathcal{G}_F$ to that of $\mathcal{G}_{\bar{F}}$, the W-group of the residue field $\bar{F}$ when $X_F$ is a connected space. Residual nilpotence and ordering in one-relator groups and knot groups

Let $G=< x,t\mid w>$ be a one-relator group, where $w$ is a word in $x,t$. If $w$ is a product of conjugates of $x$ then, associated with $w$, there is a polynomial $A_w(X)$ over the integers, which in the case when $G$ is a knot group, is the Alexander polynomial of the knot. We prove, subject to certain restrictions on $w$, that if all roots of $A_w(X)$ are real and positive then $G$ is bi-orderable, and that if $G$ is bi-orderable then at least one root is real and positive. On non-conjugate Coxeter elements in well-generated reflection groups

Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. Subgroups of Spin(7) or SO(7) with each element conjugate to some element of G_2, and applications to automorphic forms

As is well-known, the compact groups Spin(7) and SO(7) both have a single conjugacy class of compact subgroups of exceptional type G_2. We first show that if H is a subgroup of Spin(7), and if each element of H is conjugate to some element of G_2, then H itself is conjugate to a subgroup of G_2. The analogous statement for SO(7) turns out be false, and our main result is a classification of all the exceptions. Orderings and flexibility of some subgroups of $Homeo_+(\mathbb{R})$

In this work we exhibit flexibility phenomena for some (countable) groups acting by order preserving homeomorphisms of the line. More precisely, we show that if a left orderable group admits an amalgam decomposition of the form $G=\mathbb{F}_n*_{\mathbb Z} \mathbb{F}_m$ where $n+m\geq 3$, then every faithful action of $G$ on the line by order preserving homeomorphisms can be approximated by another action (without global fixed points) that is not semi-conjugated to the initial action.
