We present cut and project formalism based on measures and continuous weight functions of sufficiently fast decay. The emerging measures are strongly almost periodic. The corresponding dynamical systems are compact groups and homomorphic images of the underlying torus. In particular, they are strictly ergodic with pure point spectrum and continuous eigenfunctions. Their diffraction can be calculated explicitly. Our results cover and extend corresponding earlier results on dense Dirac combs and continuous weight functions with compact support. They also mark a clear difference in terms of factor maps between the case of continuous and non-continuous weight functions.
Certain topological dynamical systems are considered that arise from actions of $σ$-compact locally compact Abelian groups on compact spaces of translation bounded measures. Such a measure dynamical system is shown to have pure point dynamical spectrum if and only if its diffraction spectrum is pure point.
We show that for multi-colored Delone point sets with finite local complexity and uniform cluster frequencies the notions of pure point diffraction and pure point dynamical spectrum are equivalent.
Delone sets of finite local complexity in Euclidean space are investigated. We show that such a set has patch counting and topological entropy 0 if it has uniform cluster frequencies and is pure point diffractive. We also note that the patch counting entropy is 0 whenever the repetitivity function satisfies a certain growth restriction.
This paper deals with certain dynamical systems built from point sets and, more generally, measures on locally compact Abelian groups. These systems arise in the study of quasicrystals and aperiodic order, and important subclasses of them exhibit pure point diffraction spectra. We discuss the relevant framework and recall fundamental results and examples. In particular, we show that pure point diffraction is stable under ``equivariant'' local perturbations and discuss various examples, including deformed model sets. A key step in the proof of stability consists in transforming the problem into …
We examine the diffraction properties of lattice dynamical systems of algebraic origin. It is well-known that diverse dynamical properties occur within this class. These include different orders of mixing (or higher-order correlations), the presence or absence of measure rigidity (restrictions on the set of possible shift-invariant ergodic measures to being those of algebraic origin), and different entropy ranks (which may be viewed as the maximal spatial dimension in which the system resembles an i.i.d.\ process). Despite these differences, it is shown that the resulting diffraction spectra a…
For a random field on a general discrete set, we introduce a condition that the range of the correlation from each site is within a predefined compact set D. For such a random field omega defined on the model set Lambda that satisfies a natural geometric condition, we develop a method to calculate the diffraction measure of the random field. The method partitions the random field into a finite number of random fields, each being independent and admitting the law of large numbers. The diffraction measure of omega consists almost surely of a pure-point component and an absolutely continuous comp…
There is a growing body of results in the theory of discrete point sets and tiling systems giving conditions under which such systems are pure point diffractive. Here we look at the opposite direction: what can we infer about a discrete point set or tiling, defined through a primitive substitution system, given that it is pure point diffractive? Our basic objects are Delone multisets and tilings, which are self-replicating under a primitive substitution system of affine mappings with a common expansive map $Q$. Our first result gives a partial answer to a question of Lagarias and Wang: we char…
In this paper, several aspects of the random noble means substitution are studied. Beyond important dynamical facets as the frequency of subwords and the computation of the topological entropy, the important issue of ergodicity is addressed. From the geometrical point of view, we outline a suitable cut and project setting for associated point sets and present results for the spectral analysis of the diffraction measure.
In this work we consider translation-bounded measures over a locally compact Abelian group $\mathbb{G}$, with particular interest for their so-called diffraction. Given such a measure $Λ$, its diffraction $\widehatγ$ is another measure on the Pontryagin dual $\widehat{\mathbb{G}}$, whose decomposition into the sum $\widehatγ = \widehatγ_{\mathrm{p}}+ \widehatγ_{\mathrm{c}}$ of its atomic and continuous parts is central in diffraction theory. The problem we address here is whether the above decomposition of $\widehatγ$ lifts to $Λ$ itself, that is to say, whether there exists a decomposition $Λ…
Modifying Rudin's original construction of the Rudin-Shapiro sequence, we derive a new substitution-based sequence with purely absolutely continuous diffraction spectrum.
The well-known plastic number substitution gives rise to a ternary inflation tiling of the real line whose inflation factor is the smallest Pisot-Vijayaraghavan number. The corresponding dynamical system has pure point spectrum, and the associated control point sets can be described as regular model sets whose windows in two-dimensional internal space are Rauzy fractals with a complicated structure. Here, we calculate the resulting pure point diffraction measure via a Fourier matrix cocycle, which admits a closed formula for the Fourier transform of the Rauzy fractals, via a rapidly converging…
The translation action of $\RR^{d}$ on a translation bounded measure $ω$ leads to an interesting class of dynamical systems, with a rather rich spectral theory. In general, the diffraction spectrum of $ω$, which is the carrier of the diffraction measure, live on a subset of the dynamical spectrum. It is known that, under some mild assumptions, a pure point diffraction spectrum implies a pure point dynamical spectrum (the opposite implication always being true). For other systems, the diffraction spectrum can be a proper subset of the dynamical spectrum, as was pointed out for the Thue-Morse se…
One of the simplest non-Pisot substitution rules is investigated in its geometric version as a tiling with intervals of natural length as prototiles. Via a detailed renormalisation analysis of the pair correlation functions, we show that the diffraction measure cannot comprise any absolutely continuous component. This implies that the diffraction, apart from a trivial Bragg peak at the origin, is purely singular continuous. En route, we derive various geometric and algebraic properties of the underlying Delone dynamical system, which we expect to be relevant in other such systems as well.
We consider primitive substitution tilings on R^d whose expansion maps are unimodular. We assume that all the eigenvalues of the expansion maps are algebraic conjugates with the same multiplicity. In this case, we can construct a cut-and-project scheme with a Euclidean internal space. Under some additional condition, we show that if the substitution tiling has pure discrete spectrum, then the corresponding representative point sets are regular model sets in that cut-and-project scheme.
We define spherical diffraction measures for a wide class of weighted point sets in commutative spaces, i.e. proper homogeneous spaces associated with Gelfand pairs. In the case of the hyperbolic plane we can interpret the spherical diffraction measure as the Mellin transform of the auto-correlation distribution. We show that uniform regular model sets in commutative spaces have a pure point spherical diffraction measure. The atoms of this measure are located at the spherical automorphic spectrum of the underlying lattice, and the diffraction coefficients can be characterized abstractly in ter…
It is well-known that the dynamical spectrum of an ergodic measure dynamical system is related to the diffraction measure of a typical element of the system. This situation includes ergodic subshifts from symbolic dynamics as well as ergodic Delone dynamical systems, both via suitable embeddings. The connection is rather well understood when the spectrum is pure point, where the two spectral notions are essentially equivalent. In general, however, the dynamical spectrum is richer. Here, we consider (uniquely) ergodic systems of finite local complexity and establish the equivalence of the dynam…
We prove that a primitive substitution Delone set, which is pure point diffractive, is a Meyer set. This answers a question of J. C. Lagarias. We also show that for primitive substitution Delone sets, being a Meyer set is equivalent to having a relatively dense set of Bragg peaks. The proof is based on tiling dynamical systems and the connection between the diffraction and dynamical spectra.
As a guiding example, the diffraction measure of a random local mixture of the two classic Fibonacci substitutions is determined and reanalysed via self-similar measures of Hutchinson type, defined by a finite family of contractions. Our revised approach yields explicit formulas for the pure point and the absolutely continuous parts, as well as a proof for the absence of singular continuous components. This approach is then extended to the family of random noble means substitutions and, as an example with an underlying 2-adic structure, to a locally randomised version of the period doubling ch…
The paper establishes an equivalence between pure point diffraction and certain types of model sets, called inter model sets, in the context of substitution point sets and substitution tilings. The key ingredients are a new type of coincidence condition in substitution point sets, which we call algebraic coincidence, and the use of a recent characterization of model sets through dynamical systems associated with the point sets or tilings.
We show that a recently proposed Rudin-Shapiro-like sequence, with balanced weights, has purely singular continuous diffraction spectrum, in contrast to the well-known Rudin-Shapiro sequence whose diffraction is absolutely continuous. This answers a question that had been raised about this new sequence.
In this project we show the existence of arbitrary length arithmetic progressions in model sets and Meyer sets in the Euclidean $d$-space. We prove a van der Waerden type theorem for Meyer sets. We show that pure point subsets of Meyer sets with positive density and pure point diffraction contain arithmetic progressions of arbitrary length.
Letting $T$ denote an ergodic transformation of the unit interval and letting $f \colon [0,1)\to \mathbb{R}$ denote an observable, we construct the $f$-weighted return time measure $μ_y$ for a reference point $y\in[0,1)$ as the weighted Dirac comb with support in $\mathbb{Z}$ and weights $f \circ T^z(y)$ at $z\in\mathbb{Z}$, and if $T$ is non-invertible, then we set the weights equal to zero for all $z < 0$. Given such a Dirac comb, we are interested in its diffraction spectrum which emerges from the Fourier transform of its autocorrelation and analyse it for the dependence on the underlying t…
