Let {X_i} be a tower of discrete G-spectra, each of which is fibrant as a spectrum, so that X=holim_i X_i is a continuous G-spectrum, with homotopy fixed point spectrum X^{hG}. The E_2-term of the descent spectral sequence for π_*(X^{hG}) cannot always be expressed as continuous cohomology. However, we show that the E_2-term is always built out of a certain complex of spectra, that, in the context of abelian groups, is used to compute the continuous cochain cohomology of G with coefficients in lim_i M_i, where {M_i} is a tower of discrete G-modules.

Galois Descent for Real Spectra

We prove analogs of faithfully flat descent and Galois descent for categories of modules over $E_{\infty}$-ring spectra using the $\infty$-categorical Barr-Beck theorem proved by Lurie. In particular, faithful $G$-Galois extensions are shown to be of effective descent for modules. Using this we study the category of $ER(n)$-modules, where $ER(n)$ is the $\mathbb{Z}/2$-fixed points under complex conjugation of a generalized Johnson-Wilson spectrum $E(n)$. In particular, we show that $ER(n)$-modules is equivalent to $\mathbb{Z}$/2-equivariant $E(n)$-modules as stable $\infty$-categories.

A general framework for homotopic descent and codescent

In this paper we elaborate a general homotopy-theoretic framework in which to study problems of descent and completion and of their duals, codescent and cocompletion. This paper starts with an exposition of descent-theoretic techniques in the study of Picard groups of $\mathbf{E}_{\infty}$-ring spectra, which naturally lead to the study of Picard spectra. We prove a new convergence result for the slice spectral sequence, following work by Levine and Voevodsky. This verifies a derived variant of Voevodsky's conjecture on convergence of the slice spectral sequence.
