We generalize the Plesken-Fabiańska $\mathrm{L}_2$-quotient algorithm for finitely presented groups on two or three generators to allow an arbitrary number of generators. The main difficulty lies in a constructive description of the invariant ring of $\mathrm{GL}(2, K)$ on $m$ copies of $\mathrm{SL}(2, K)$ by simultaneous conjugation. By giving this description, we generalize and simplify some of the known results in invariant theory. An implementation of the algorithm is available in the computer algebra system Magma.

We show that for any finite group $G$ and for any $d$ there exists a word $w\in F_{d}$ such that a $d$-tuple in $G$ satisfies $w$ if and only if it generates a solvable subgroup. We initiate the study of the $p$-local commensurability graph of a group, where $p$ is a prime. This graph has vertices consisting of all finite-index subgroups of a group, where an edge is drawn between $A$ and $B$ if $[A : A\cap B]$ and $[B: A\cap B]$ are both powers of $p$. We prove that for a relatively hyperbolic group G there is a sequence of relatively hyperbolic proper quotients such that their growth rates converge to the growth rate of G. Under natural assumptions, the same conclusion holds for the critical exponent of a cusp-uniform action of G on a hyperbolic metric space.
