We show that a complete $m$-dimensional immersed submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with $a(M)<1$ is properly immersed and have finite topology, where $a(M)\in [0,\infty]$ is an scaling invariant number that gives the rate that the norm of the second fundamental form decays to zero at infinity. The class of submanifolds $M$ with $a(M)<1$ contains all complete minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with finite total curvature, all $m$-dimensional minimal submanifolds $M $ of $ \mathbb{R}^{n}$ with finite total scalar curvature $\smallint_{M}| α|^{m} dV<\infty $ and all complete 2-dimensional complete surfaces with $\smallint_{M}| α|^{2} dV<\infty $ and nonpositive curvature with respect to every normal direction, since $a(M)=0$ for them.
We define a Gauss map $γ:M\rightarrow\mathbb{S}^{6}$ of an oriented hypersurface $M$ of the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{7}$ and prove that $γ$ is harmonic if and only if $M$ has CMC. Results on the geometry and topology of CMC hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^{7}$, under hypothesis on the image of $γ$, are then obtained. By a Hopf symmetrization process we define a Gauss map for hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ and obtain similar results for CMC hypersurfaces of this space.
In this paper we prove that the unit ball $\mathbb{B}$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ admits complete properly embedded complex curves of any given topological type. Moreover, we provide examples containing any given closed discrete subset of $\mathbb{B}$.
We prove that given an open Riemann surface $N,$ there exists an open domain $M\subset N$ homeomorphic to $N$ which properly holomorphically embeds in $\mathbb{C}^2.$ Furthermore, $M$ can be chosen with hyperbolic conformal type. In particular, any open orientable surface admits a complex structure properly holomorphically embedding into $\mathbb{C}^2.$
For fixed large genus, we construct families of complete immersed minimal surfaces in R3 with four ends and dihedral symmetries. The families exist for all large genus and at an appropriate scale degenerate to the plane.
In this paper, we study the topology of real analytic map-germs with isolated critical value $f: (\mathbb{R}^m,0) \to (\mathbb{R}^n,0)$, with $1 <n <m$. We compare the topology of $f$ with the topology of the compositions $π_i^* \circ f$, where $π_i^*: \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ are the projections $(t_1, \dots, t_n) \mapsto (t_1, \dots, t_{i-1}, t_{i+1}, \dots, t_n)$, for $i=1, \dots, n$. As a main result, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for $f$ to have a Lê-Milnor fibration in the tube.
This paper contains some more results on the topology of a nondegenerate action of $\mathbb{R}^n$ on a compact connected $n$-manifold $M$ when the action is totally hyperbolic (i.e. its toric degree is zero). We study the $\mathbb{R}$-action generated by a fixed vector of $\mathbb{R}^n$, that provides some results on the number of hyperbolic domains and the number of fixed points of the action. We study with more details the case of the 2-sphere, in particular we investigate some combinatorial properties of the associated 4-valent graph embedded in $S^2$. We also construct hyperbolic actions i…
Given a closed complex hypersurface $Z\subset \mathbb{C}^{N+1}$ $(N\in\mathbb{N})$ and a compact subset $K\subset Z$, we prove the existence of a pseudoconvex Runge domain $D$ in $Z$ such that $K\subset D$ and there is a complete proper holomorphic embedding from $D$ into the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^{N+1}$. For $N=1$, we derive the existence of complete properly embedded complex curves in the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^2$, with arbitrarily prescribed finite topology. In particular, there exist complete proper holomorphic embeddings of the unit disc $\mathbb{D}\subset \mathbb{C}$ into the unit b…
In this paper we solve the Björling problem for the class of immersed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose mean curvature is given as an analytic function depending on its Gauss map. As an application, we prove the existence of surfaces with the topology of a Möbius strip for an arbitrary large class of prescribed functions. In particular, we use the Björling problem to construct the first known examples of self-translating solitons of the mean curvature flow with the topology of a Möbius strip in $\mathbb{R}^3$
We use a weak mean curvature flow together with a surgery procedure to show that all closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with entropy less than or equal to that of $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{R}$, the round cylinder in $\mathbb{R}^4$, are diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{S}^3$.
In 1997, Collin proved that any properly embedded minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite topology and more than one end has finite total Gaussian curvature. Hence, by an earlier result of Lopez and Ros, catenoids are the only non-planar, non-simply connected, properly embedded, minimal planar domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of finite topology. In 2005, Meeks and Rosenberg proved that the only simply connected, properly embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are planes and helicoids. Around 1860, Riemann defined a one-parameter family of periodic, infinite topology, properly embedded, min…
We introduce the notion of translational Riemannian manifolds and define a Gauss map for orientable immersed hypersurfaces lying in these ambients, an associated translational curvature and prove a Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We also use this Gauss map to prove that if $M^{n}$ is a compact, connected and oriented immersed hypersurface of the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}$ ($n\geq2$) contained in a geodesic ball of radius $R$ and whose principal curvatures are strictly bigger than $\tan\left( R/2 \right)$, then $M$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{S}^{n}$. Additionally, we show that for any $\varepsilon\…
We describe topologically the discriminant locus of a smooth cubic surface in the complex projective space ${\mathbb{CP}}^3$ that contains 5 fibres of the projection ${\mathbb{CP}}^3 \longrightarrow S^4$.
It is known that a complete immersed minimal surface with finite total curvature in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb R$ is proper, has finite topology and each one of its ends is asymptotic to a geodesic polygon at infinity (Hauswirth and Rosenberg, 2006; Hauswirth, Nelli, Sa Earp and Toubiana, 2015). In this paper we prove that these three properties characterize complete immersed minimal surfaces with finite total curvature in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb R$. As corollaries of this theorem we obtain characterizations for minimal Scherk-type graphs and horizontal catenoids in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb …
We show that any complete $f$-stable translating soliton $M$ admits no codimension one cycle which does not disconnect $M$. As a corollary, it follows that any two dimensional complete $f$-stable translating soliton has genus zero.
In this paper we prove that a properly embedded constant mean curvature surface in $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ which has finite topology and stays at a finite distance from a vertical geodesic line is invariant by rotation around a vertical geodesic line.
In this paper, we show that the low energy spaces in the prescribed singularity case $\mathcal{E}_ψ(X,θ,ϕ)$ have a natural topology which is completely metrizable. This topology is stronger than convergence in capacity.
In this paper, we mainly study the compactness and local structure of immersing surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with local uniform bounded area and small total curvature $\int_{Σ\cap B_1(0)} |A|^2$. A key ingredient is a new quantity which we call isothermal radius. Using the estimate of the isothermal radius we establish a compactness theorem of such surfaces in intrinsic $L^p$-topology and extrinsic $W^{2,2}$-weak topology. As applications, we can explain Leon Simon's decomposition theorem\cite{LS} in the viewpoint of convergence and prove a non-collapsing version of Hélein's convergence theorem\…
For an immersed minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$, we show that there exists a lower bound on its Morse index that depends on the genus and number of ends, counting multiplicity. This improves, in several ways, an estimate we previously obtained bounding the genus and number of ends by the index. Our new estimate resolves several conjectures made by J. Choe and D. Hoffman concerning the classification of low-index minimal surfaces: we show that there are no complete two-sided immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of index two, complete embedded minimal surface with index three, or comple…
The octonionic flag manifold $Fl(\mathbb{O})$ is the space of all pairs in $\mathbb{O}P^2\times \mathbb{O}P^2$ (where $\mathbb{O}P^2$ denotes the octonionic projective plane) which satisfy a certain "incidence" relation. It comes equipped with the projections $π_1,π_2 : Fl(\mathbb{O})\to \mathbb{O}P^2$, which are $\mathbb{O}P^1$ bundles, as well as with an action of the group $Spin(8)$. The first two results of this paper give Borel type descriptions of the usual, respectively $Spin(8)$-equivariant cohomology of $Fl(\mathbb{O})$ in terms of $π_1$ and $π_2$ (actually the Euler classes of the ta…
In this paper, we study the topology of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature. We show that a complete noncompact manifold with asymptoticaly nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvature decay at most quadratically is diffeomorphic to a Euclidean n-space R^n under some conditions on the density of rays starting from the base point p or on the volume growth of geodesic balls in M.
In this paper we give new existence results for complete non-orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with prescribed topology and asymptotic behavior.
The purpose of this paper is to study complete $λ$-surfaces in Euclidean space $\mathbb R^3$. A complete classification for 2-dimensional complete $λ$-surfaces in Euclidean space $\mathbb R^3$ with constant squared norm of the second fundamental form is given.
Let $Σ$ be an oriented compact hypersurface in the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ or in the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^n$, $n\geq 3$. In the case of the torus, $Σ$ is further assumed to be contained in a contractible subset of $\mathbb{T}^n$. We show that for any sufficiently large enough odd integer $N$ there exists an eigenfunctions $ψ$ of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$ satisfying $Δψ=-λψ$ (with $λ=N(N+n-1)$ or $N^2$ on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$, respectively), and with a connected component of the nodal set of $ψ$ given by~$Σ$, up to an ambient diffeomorphism.
We prove that the uniformizing map of any arithmetic quotient, as well as the period map associated to any pure polarized $\mathbb{Z}$-variation of Hodge structure $\mathbb{V}$ on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$, are topologically tame. As an easy corollary of these results and of Peterzil-Starchenko's o-minimal GAGA theorem we obtain that the Hodge locus of $(S, \mathbb{V})$ is a countable union of algebraic subvarieties of $S$ (a result originally due to Cattani-Deligne-Kaplan).
Extending recent work in 5 dimensions, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the reduced Einstein equations for vacuum black holes in $(n+3)$-dimensional spacetimes admitting the isometry group $\mathbb{R}\times U(1)^{n}$, with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics for $n\geq3$. This is equivalent to establishing existence and uniqueness for singular harmonic maps $φ: \mathbb{R}^3\setminusΓ\rightarrow SL(n+1,\mathbb{R})/SO(n+1)$ with prescribed blow-up along $Γ$, a subset of the $z$-axis in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We also analyze the topology of the domain of outer communication for these spacetime…
Future stability of expanding spatially homogeneous FLRW solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein--massless Vlasov system with spatial topology $\mathbb{R}^3$
Let $Y$ be a compact Kähler normal space and $α\in H^{1,1}(Y,\mathbb{R})$ a Kähler class. We study metric properties of the space $\mathcal{H}_α$ of Kähler metrics in $α$ using Mabuchi geodesics. We extend several results by Calabi, Chen, Darvas previously established when the underlying space is smooth. As an application we analytically characterize the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties, generalizing a result of Tian, and illustrate these concepts in the case of toric varieties.
We study the formation of finite time singularities of the Kahler-Ricci flow in relation to high codimensional birational surgery in algebraic geometry. We show that the Kahler-Ricci flow on an n-dimensionl Kahler manifold contracts a complex submanifold $\mathbb{P}^m$ with normal bundle $\oplus_{j=1}^{n-m}\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^m}(-a_j)$ for $a_j\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ and $\sum_{j=1}^{n-m} a_j \leq m$ in Gromov-Hausdorff topology with suitable initial Kahler class. We also show that the Kahler-Ricci flow resolves a family of isolated singularities uniquely in Gromov-Hausdorff topology. In particul…
In this paper we prove that, given an open Riemann surface $M$ and an integer $n\ge 3$, the set of complete conformal minimal immersions $M\to\mathbb{R}^n$ with $\overline{X(M)}=\mathbb{R}^n$ forms a dense subset in the space of all conformal minimal immersions $M\to\mathbb{R}^n$ endowed with the compact-open topology. Moreover, we show that every domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ contains complete minimal surfaces which are dense on it and have arbitrary orientable topology (possibly infinite); we also provide such surfaces whose complex structure is any given bordered Riemann surface. Our method of p…
In this paper we prove that two-dimensional translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite $L$-index are homeomorphic to a plane or a cylinder and that a two-dimensional self-expander with finite $L$-index and sub exponential weighted volume growth has finite topology. We also prove that translating solitons and self-expanders have finite topology, provided the bottom of the spectrum of the $L$-stability operator is bounded from below and their weighted volume have subexponential growth.
We study proper, isometric actions of nonsolvable discrete groups Gamma on the 3-dimensional Minkowski space R^{2,1} as limits of actions on the 3-dimensional anti-de Sitter space AdS^3. To each such action is associated a deformation of a hyperbolic surface group Gamma_0 inside O(2,1). When Gamma_0 is convex cocompact, we prove that Gamma acts properly on R^{2,1} if and only if this group-level deformation is realized by a deformation of the quotient surface that everywhere contracts distances at a uniform rate. We give two applications in this case. (1) Tameness: A complete flat spacetime is…
